Beck’s evil scheme to entice consumers into buying his record includes offering a bonus DVD of home-made videos for each of The Information‘s fifteen tracks, and a bunch of stickers so fans can personalize the record’s cover. Although not DVD quality, you can grab those vids over at Shots Ring Out, each presented in downloadable, iPod-friendly Quicktime format.

And while we can all agree that videos are harmless good fun, the British charts are having none of those stickers. The LA Times reports that England has disqualified Beck’s latest “from appearing on sales charts because those extras give it an ‘unfair advantage’ over less elaborate packages.”

Beck’s response: “Any art on a CD is an incentive to buy and listen.” Which is a solid argument, unless you’re a John Bult fan.

are you kidding? they wont sell it cause of the stickers? woah.

    Reviews of The Information? Anyone?

  2. They’ll sell the CD, but they won’t let it appear on the sales charts. I think The Information is a pretty solid album, much better than Guero if you ask me. “Nausea” and “No Complaints” are my favorites so far. Plus, I’m a Devendra fan, so the album gets big ups for having him and his buddies in a video.

God forbid someone actually has a clever idea and marketing stragey. People might actually buy records again and pull the industry out of a 10yr slump. Maybe they should just pull it from the shelves. Oh and the album is awesome. Kind of sounds like a darker version of his work with the Dust Brothers

So Mike you don’t think the album should appear on the charts? Care to explain or you want to stick with 2nd grade name calling

  6. It’s so unfair that artists treat their fans with respect and provide them with extras. They should not be listed with the other ripoffs on the sales charts

  7. Completely agree with poster#1 though, Stickers are hardly going to sell them extra copies of the album.

Much better and more interesting (and darker) than I ever expected. This is not Guero Redux -it sounds like Beck’s heart is actually in this album. Also, the Nigel Godrich production is awesome.

Also, the Pitchfork review is really good. I agree with just about everything said, but I’d give it something closer to an 8.0 than a 6.9.
