I love ‘em all, but if I had to pick one, it’d be “Brighten the Corners”, and I’m kinda surprised at how easy that decision was.
i would say wowee zowee is the best summation of malkmus as a songwriter and slanted is the best summation of pavement as a band. can’t wait for this reissue.
For me, they were really more of a singles band.
Jesus Christ, last night I spent 2 hours listening to the slanted and enchanted re-issue. When I am 50, I plan on adding up how much of my life I spent listening to Pavement.

never really did get into pavement. aside from all the slobbering indie cred they get, alot of people really do seem to like em. am i missing out? should i give em a shot? what album should i start with?
Definitely start with Crooked Rain. Pavement is the best band ever. Hands motherfucking down.
I’ve never understood why these guys are lacquered with so much praise. Malkmus’ voice and the overall sound of the band is distinctive for sure, but the actual songwriting (not counting lyrics) is pretty weak. I’ve listened to all their albums a ton of times trying to figure out what I’m missing, but Cut Your Hair still sounds like their best song to me.

wowee zowee is the best one, although crooked rain will probably always be their “classic.” i had a six-disc cd changer in highschool, in four years there was never a reason to remove either album.
My favorite is Slanted and Enchanted. It was just the first I bought and pretty much defines a period of my life. I say buy Crooked Rain if you’re a newcomer because it’s probably the most accessible.
This deal is worth it just for the ’94 show… sounds too good to be true.
And unfortunately it is. You have to order from a participating store — and not one of the those stores is located in California (Pavement’s home state).
I prefer the earlier stuff, anything with that hippy-punk lunatic Gary Young on the drums (no offense, Westie, YOU CAN DRUM!)
So while it’s not a proper album per se, just a collection of the early Eps and singles, I always point Pavement neophytes to “Westing (By Musket & Sextant)”.
Either that or what’s possibly the greatest 11 or so minutes in indie history, “Watery, Domestic”.
Watery, Domestic is perfection. That’s my favorite thing that they ever recorded. Too bad it is only four songs. All their records are great except for Terror Twilight which is merely very good. I would also recommend Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain as a starting point but everything is worth owning. I guess we should expect the Brighten The Corners 2 CD reissue in a couple of years.

The show that you can download is excellent. The band is fine form, the set is great, and the sound is amazing. I got an email with the code for the download about 2 days after I pre-ordered the reissue. The fact that I am still getting a 2 CD reissue and a rare 7″ along with this makes the small price I had to pay more than worth it.
