  1. Surprisingly, I’m really into this. Their image turns me off, but the music itself is refreshingly exciting. I have the feeling that a lot of the hate for them on this site is really directed towards mall-emo and mall-emo fashion, but musically this is good stuff.

  2. I liked Mark Carson’s version better.

As I began to listen I noticed that the first song is a TOTAL David Bowie’s “Five years” [from Ziggy Stardust] rip off… both musically, lyrically, and thematically. I stopped listening after that.

this is the album of the year hands down…take it from someone who knows about every obscure indie band you all cream over from week to week…this album cripples everything and anything…I was a hater too, but seriously just listen to it

  5. balumpus  |   Posted on Oct 19th, 2006

    no thanks.

  6. No, this sucks. Sorry.

the songs alright, but i’m really digging the video. there’s this great review of it on obtusity.

    wow rafael so true…

how can they get away with this…

  9. Please stop posting these.

  10. rgr_moore  |   Posted on Oct 19th, 2006

ok so I skimmed through most of the songs and some bits are quite good but why must they put stupid simple plan sounding guitars on every track? makes it hard to get into…

  11. juano  |   Posted on Oct 19th, 2006

o no. this is only one step ahead of posting fall out boy

  12. Rob z.  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

wtf are you doing stereogum? lost some points in my book you fools.

  13. jeffro  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

I wonder if the fake name for the promo cd’s has anything to do with the meaning of the album. i googled mark carson and didn’t find much but i did find out that mark j. carson was a mathametician who was a part of the manhatten project and helped to create the hydrogen bomb. coincidence? maybe… or maybe not!?

  14. SamB  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

At first impression I’m not impressed, and I don’t like to be the “what’s happened stereogum?–re-indy-ify” guy, but don’t these guys get plenty of press elsewhere? I mean, whatever, but with the complete lack of content on this post it seems like a google ad anyway. I wonder if you got some sort of kickback for it or what (not that that’s not OK with me, I know you need to eat and stuff). Do you like it or not? Surely your audience doesn’t call your site up to find out where to stream the new I Think I Love Drugs album. Surely TRL and Billboard and best buy and circuit city and virgin records and all of them are letting the kids know about it.
No hate here, but I am smirking a bit.

  15. connor  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

I can’t believe I put myself through that. It’s naught but a horrific stew American Idiot and every other bland, ridiculously popular ‘rock’ album from the past 4 years. Seriously, why was this even posted? Cause “Helena” was catchy?

  16. Devin  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

I couldn’t even get it to play the songs, but I am going to review it anyways. What’s with his voice on that first track? It sounds like a pre-pubescent teenager got his shoelace caught in the escalator at the mall and screamed out in pain which echoed throughout the mall providing that empty yet suburban scrawl that is so hott right now. How do music prodcers sit there for hours with crap like this? And then the song, the structure is such a ripoff of bowies sound on ziggy stardust. You can hear the bleach thistling through his hair, it tastes of vermilion but smells like ammonia. This album will probably sell millions and every time I eject my tape connector to my ipod I will be subjected to listening to 15 seconds of this crap.

  17. nick  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

    fuck this album…

NEW SHINS LEAKED AND IT RULES.

  18. It’s good to see that they’re trying to grow out of the power-pop faux-emo sound, but goddamn, could you guys, just for once, stop playing the exact same tired power chords and riffs for every song?

  19. Devin  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

is that shins for real? seems suspicious…

  20. Devin  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

update: it’s for real. awesome, thanks for this. Where the hell did you get it from? I don’t see it anywhere yet..

  21. I don’t think our egos’ are ready for Decemberists/matchbox20/i-hate-myself tunes yet.

this may be a good post into the future.. say maybe 10-15 years from now..

  22. nick  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

the leaked version is only 128, so its not going to be up on oink or indietorrents.

  23. tobias funke  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

new shins: really, really good. definately as good as chutes if not better.

  24. wow! Shins!!

  29. I checked last night and Wincing the Night Away is on slsk, so have at it.

  30. dude  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

Wow. That five years comparison couldn’t be more spot on. Just wow.

  31. ugh, I listened to it and it was ok.
I was a huge fan when they first had their album out and then the second one after but this one I don’t know, not really digging it, something about it just doesn’t go. I guess I just miss their hard stuff or maybe I’m growing out them whatever I’ll save my pennies for something better.

  32. Synth Pop  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

I don’t much about these guys, but I know “the kids” like it. It’s not bad really. Not my thing, but there’s talent here.

  34. paul  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

why waste pennies on it? its already torrented, as of yesturday. its really not bad, if you like this sort of thing… however, its not gonna change Zack Braff’s life.

  35. paul  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2006

quit the double posts! be patient, go make a sandwich, open another window & check up on pitchfork or something… stop clicking like a maniac!

  36. finn  |   Posted on Oct 23rd, 2006

i think this rocks, and as i said before, this will put my chem way way way above the emo tag — and deservingly so. i’m relieved they’ll finally break away from being grouped with mediocre bands like fob and p!atd! now who else is going to bet that this will be a strong contender for this year’s album of the year? who would’ve thought that ultragrrrl was really up to something?

  37. Julie  |   Posted on Oct 28th, 2006

    i hated them foreverr.

and then i listened to their last album
and it was good because it wasnt like all
    the other shit out there.

    this one, idk about it.

    hahah the shins! yes radness.

  38. adam  |   Posted on Nov 2nd, 2006

i love My Chemical Romance’s lyrics. I love how every track sounds different. It’s about living through shit and still being strong. Even though it’s not as good or different as the shins or tv on the radio or whatever their still the shitt

  39. kitty  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2006

    My Chemical Romance rules..

  40. Lauren  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2007

I think that My Chemical Romance is the best boy band ever well not even boy band the best band ever. and Gerard and Mikey are like the cutest guys ever and Frank and Ray are by far the best guitarists ever and you cant forget Bob he is sooo kool at the drums i think My Chemical Romance will go a long way. MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE ROX

  41. My Chemical Romance is actually really cool…wait not actually, i never thought that they wouldn’t be cool! The are freaking amazing, and I couldn’t live without them! Their music means so much to me…it’s intense. You guys, you have to listen to more than one song, and understand the lyrics before you can judge them and say that they suck, because they don’t. They are out there to save lives, but I guess they could care less what you people think about them. They are invinceable, and they love their fans. They wouldn’t do anything to hurt them! They care about them, and they are really nice to all of their fans! They try to get everywhere, and spread the word, that way, more lives can be saved. Please take time, and listen to their music, and I think that you guys would really enjoy it. Maybe that’s just my opinion, but I am not alone.
    Long Live My Chemical Romance.
