Yesterday, hip-hop pianist Nellie McKay released Pretty Little Head, the follow-up to her highly acclaimed Get Away From Me. It was originally slated for release last October, but Sony insisted on a single CD, instead of Nellie’s 23-song opus. But you can’t keep a good cabaret rapper down, and Head‘s new home is Nellie’s own Hungry Mouse label.
Her witty rhyme stylings (“Never had Nintendo/Saw a lot of Brecht, though”) remind us of Paul Barman meets Broadway. With a PETA twist. Among McKay’s passion projects are banning carriage horses throughout the country and trying to close Columbia University?s primate laboratories.

From this song, she reminds me of one of those college theater arts divas that I’d see at lame parties surrounded by her friends and being the “life of the party”. I don’t exactly know why that is, but perhaps it’s because she’s apparently going to Broadway, drops mad rhymes about Brecht, and is passionate about the ban on carriage horses.
Are her albums actually any good?
I first got this album right around the time Extraordinary Machine leaked, and Nellie’s disk is the clear winner. “there you are in me” has been one of my favorite songs of the year, and I can’t wait to get a hard copy of this.

Nellie rocks my boat… Her last record was a bit too much overproduced. I liked the live bootleg versions of her much more… Anyway, yeah… sigh…
