We managed to swing by the Fader House just in time to catch the dirty, electro-disco of Shout Out Out Out Out (that’s four “Out”s for those keeping score, if you don’t count the “out” that it’s in “shOUT”). “We’re from Alberta and we play dance music and scream curse words through a vocoder and hopefully you get it.” That was the introduction the Canadian outfit offered before turning up their bass and synths and hopping around to the sound of their own obscenities — and it seemed like most “got it.”

They dedicated “Forever Indebted” to those permanently in the red and kicked up the room’s energy, dance-party style. Can’t say we’re pulled strongly enough for a full set of the stuff (unlike other electro/live dance acts like Hot Chip), but their energy on stage is manic. Not Saying/Just Saying is pretty nasty, and by CMJ’s end, tongues were wagging about their live sets around the city. There’s a little MSTRKRFT running through their veins. We dig it.

SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT

And before Shout Out x4 we managed to catch a few songs from Swedish chanteuse Frida Hyvönen. The booze schmooze (aided by non-stop free Red Stripe) wasn’t an ideal setting for Frida’s buzzed about, sedate piano comps, but we got what she was going for. If you like ladies at the keys with a strong sense of Joni and no reticence in communicating sexual thoughts and poetry (and who doesn’t?), then Frida’s your gal.
