Think about it: If you were the last emperor and could have anything in the world for your birthday, wouldn’t you ask for a bunch of super-serious, whispering-under-their-breath then-screaming dudes in eyeliner? Well then this you’ll love! Peep the epic, Far East glory of Catalano’s new, cinematic clip. This is the very first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People?s Republic of China. Do they have MTVu in China? And remember: He killed himself for this … literally!

the grudge meets the last samurai with enough flashes of jared’s face to make every fat little mall emo girl swoon.

  2. I’m still wondering what Steve Prefontaine is doing fronting a rock band.

Honestly, who gives a shit about this stuff? Isn’t there something better you could spotlight? Seems like every other post is a 30 seconds to mars or my chemical bromance plug designed to look like a fake insult…

Good God, Leto. We get it already. You’re the most important thing to happen to rock and roll. Now bite me.

  5. been out of the country for a while and i have to say that has been pretty good since i’ve missed all of this crap. jordan catalano still looks hot though the music is shite and they’re ruining eyeliner for the rest of us – and i’m a girl.

  15. My god, what’s the record holder for longest, most boring intro to a video before the music part of it actually starts? I guarantee Leto & Co. here didn’t take first place, but I bet they placed.

  16. ReaperMan  |   Posted on Nov 27th, 2006

Yeah the beginning was kind of boring. To be honest I’m /still/ trying to figure out what the hell they were doing in this video. Has anyone noticed that their videos may be deep, but they make /no/ sense? Not even to the lyrics of the song. I could kind of see the lyrics pertaining to the emperor up until the Samurai fight and the chicks in the head thing. The stocks, whatever… And what the hell was the guy with the rope for? Are these Jared’s personal demons or something?

Has anyone seen the director’s cut? Even with the extra footage it /still/ doesn’t make sense.

30 Seconds right now are topping everything you can imagine, and as mentioned before, if you don?t like the music, the band, the band mates, or are totally brain-dead, don?t listen to the music, have you not got anything left to do with your pitiful lives? Maybe you should go and listen to some more main stream and lay off the bands who make there music for artistic reasons not just greed.

  23. Stephanie Clark  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2006

I believe they have a strong sense of what a human being goes through. If you didn’t know any better, the “rope” that your talking about is referring to a different religion known as “Opus Dei”. The man with the “rope” is punishing himself for his sins. If you’ve ever seen or read The Da Vinci Code you would know that. I’ve studied things like this out of interest. Yes Jared is pretty to look at and yes, I agree with everyone who is here that doesn’t like 30STM. I on the other hand will continue to enjoy their down-to-earth lyrics and wonderful music hopefully for years to come. It’s hard to find bands with lyrics you can relate to but I guess it depends on the person. I thought the video was amazing and the footage was breath-taking. Must be hard for you people to comprehend….I don’t know.

  24. So.Scene.Mishka  |   Posted on Dec 4th, 2006

Mmmm, I agree wholeheartedly with miss Clark up there… I only -just- started listening to TSTM, but really… If you’re going to do nothing but insult the musician(s), then really, move on?

Anyways. I didn’t really understand the video as a whole. I got the idea, but… i have yet to realize how the video ties to the song. I guess, maybe, it’s from the viewpoint of the Emporor, “On a mountain he sits/not of gold but of sh*t” and such.. Hn. But all in all I really enjoyed this video, with Jared’s mesmerizing singing talent and the beautiful foreign imagery. Wonderful.

  25. buzz  |   Posted on Dec 7th, 2006

I’m not ont to bag on an honest person’s hard work, but are you f’ing kidding me?

I’m dumbfounded by how awful that video was.

What a bunch of self-important ass clowns. U felt like doing some of my own self flagellation to take away the feeling of embarassment I had for those dudes…

  26. yourmamma  |   Posted on Dec 8th, 2006

If they could just show more of jareds bare chest. Honestly, I wanted to lick my tv screen. He’s beautiful, the video is imaginative, his voice is powerful, the lyrics are driven, the music rocks and I happen to love the eyeliner.

  27. marissa  |   Posted on Dec 13th, 2006

man if you guys are gonna just come on here and post frickin hate mail the video then frickin watch it in the first place!
in my opinion, it was pretty damn awesome, i mean the beginning was a longer then i wished it couldve been but jared’s body made up for it! and if i do say so myself the eyeliner is pretty hot as well! =]

Jared Leto directed both of these video under a different name. Great videos, great songs, great band — no denying it. Does what a video is supposed to do — I will now buy the cd.

I wasn’t insulting their music or the musicians. I’m just saying the video sucked, plain and simple. But after reading what Miz Clark said, I understand it a /little/ bit more. But other than that, I stand firm in my opinion that it sucked. I love the band, love their look and music. Just not the video.

I love the 30 seconds to mars vidoes. They may be long but they are really good and are pretty cool. I could watch the “From Yesterday” video for the rest of my life. I am personally a big 30 seconds to mars fan and i don’t see how you guys don’t like the videos. So shut the hell up because their videos are a lot better than half of the videos out there!! Long live 30 seconds to mars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. wendy  |   Posted on Feb 19th, 2007

I know that “The Kill” video was modeled after Stanley Kubrick’s version of Stephen King’s “The Shining”. Does anyone know if “From Yesterday” was modeled after a particular movie?

  42. Bobbie  |   Posted on Feb 21st, 2007

This is the 1st 30STM song or video I’ve seen, and it caught me right away. They’ve captured something powerful. An aspect of the human condition that was lost to antiquity, then reborn in the actors. A lot of fun to watch.

  43. Fitzy  |   Posted on Feb 27th, 2007

What does an A-Lister who has done a bunch of movies, AND fronts a band with a big record deal have to be depressed about? I find it offensive to see people like Leto feeling so down about life when he gets to wake up in his sweet Hollywood pad every day, goes to band practice in some awesome studio, gets to play the best guitars on the market, then attends parties with free drinks and hot chicks. Yeah, life sure is tough.
What ever happenned to rock stars living the good life? Bring back bands like Motley Crue! They appreciated their fame, and made the most of their situation. 80′s bands like Motley rocked, Leto and all today’s emo bands don’t.

  44. i know a bit of mandarin and i think the emporor wishes for “tomorrow’s show” or a show tomorrow so they get these guys to play. I also think that Samurai’s are japanese not chinese oh well though. this music video maybe loosly based on the movie The Last Emperpor which is the little kid in this clip. its a great movie you should watch it.

    • The armor IS mainland Chinese or Korean, not Japanese. The Samurai didnt use brigandene armor buff coats thats something Chinese primarily. This has NOTHING to do with Samurai’s. If you would like to know more please feel free to visit your local library and read a book.

  45. This video, I have to admit, I don’t fully understand. Actually, I found this sitte while looking for a site that might explain it. But that doesn’t keep me from appreciating the beautifully done cinematography and the gorgeous location. And no, I don’t just like TSTM for Jared Leto, even though I do admit, as a girl, I believe their is no arguing with his hotness. I heard the band when they first came out and later looked up the singer to find Leto was the frontman. If the only reason you are posting on this site is to slam them without a legitimate reason, then go away please…

  46. will someone please explain the video to me? i am sitting here and i have watched it a million times and i dont understand wtf is going on. nd b4 u all bash on me i am NOT NOT NOT dissing 3STM!!! i love them i could listen to them all day but the video made no sense.

  47. Matthew  |   Posted on May 22nd, 2007

Can’t you little girls stop whinging for 5 seconds? It’s an awesome video. Who cares what it means or whether it makes sense?!? IT’S ART.

That’s all there is to it. The made it like that because it was a good idea.

The song totally rocks and the video is fucking breathtaking. When any of you make something that cool then let us know ok..?

  48. IT IS YOUR FAULT EMOS HAVE A REPUTATION (AS EMOS)
You fuckers (not all but most) just don’t know how to make a reasoned argument. Bands like 30STM get a bad rap because terrible people like you make passionate but petty and unreasoned arguments like those above, and if you idiots are the fans.. well.. what does that say about the band?

JBeanz – telling people with an opinion different from yours not to comment is pointless; its called freedom of speech. you were allowed to make a comment weren’t you? see how special that is? everyone gets a go! As for not watching the video if we don’t like it; we can’t escape it, its on tv all the time.

    SPELLING AND SENTENCES
Many of you have treacherous spelling/grammar and this makes your opinions all the more worthless.

Craig – ‘geniouses’? get a dictionary. and you made some pretty screwed up generalisations but we will talk about them later

Kim/berley – now YOU are a particularly unique kind of retard, i would love to help you out. your sentences don’t make any sense. “i love this video so you need to back off” – can you see what is wrong with that? here is another way of putting it; ‘I like bananas so you need to eat them.’

GENERALISATIONS are often only the perception of the generaliser. Do you see what i did there? I made a generalisation. It has no argumentative value.

Renee – I loved your cutting words about the pitiful lives of those who, like you, shared their opinion about the video. If you haven’t noticed, 30STM have in fact become quite mainstream. I also chuckled at the generalised implications you made about mainstream bands. Now i have an exemplary generalisation for you.

In the video, the shots of the man punishing himself with a rope have been likened to those in the Da Vinci code in relation to the Opus Dei. I felt that this was more than just an allusion to Dan Brown or to any uber-catholic sect. It was a metaphor and a parallel of emo culture; it is widely known that emos punish themselves for being the shitty societal scum that they are, through cutting.

Can you find the generalisation in the sweetheart or should i point it out for you?

    VIDEO ITSSELF
The cinematography and camerawork were very impressive

    Stephanie Clark – Good argument
Marissa – you are retarded in so many ways i do not know where to start
Zach – stop making demands – you aren’t in a position to
Dom – y’all? where the fuck are you from, you inbred hick
    Eli – nice point
Jake et al – People are allowed to disagree so YOU “shut the hell up” . hehehe oh it feels so funny to say something so ridiculous and non-enforceable.
Fitzy: i see your point but that judjement on Leto’s life is pretty ignorant and uncalled for
Som – Of course Samurai are Japanese, adn i think their involvement ifers the 20th century invasion of china by japan. AND the plural of samurai is samurai. Not samurai’s and most certainly not with an apostrophe.

    All of my love.

  52. mark  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2007

tstm are the band ever !!! and this video is the most expensively maid video in the world so plz dont go on posting shitty comments on this artistic video anyway the meaning is : “From Yesterday”, the first video clip for a song to be entirely filmed in the Chinese Republic, was filmed using a thousand Chinese soldiers holding flags at the beginning of the video. The film starts with a young boy, presumably the emperor, being asked what he would like for his birthday. He simply states “The Sound of Tomorrow.” The action then goes to a room with the band members each doing their own thing. A woman enters and tells them that it is time. She lead them out into the hall and disappears. They walk down to the end of the hall where they attempt to open the door. They are unable to. The lights start to flicker and they go out, leaving the band puzzled.

It then opens to another scene where the band is walking through giant gates into the row of Chinese soldiers. As they are all walking down, Jared notices a woman with pale white skin walking on the exterior of the row, oblivious to the others.

They are then taken to the hall where the emperor is, and they are given scrolls. Jared then says to his brother “This is a gift?”

They are then each led to a different part of the kingdom, encountering many Chinese traditions. Matt Wachter encounters the butler whipping himself; Tomo Milicevic finds a dead woman lying on her bed, and he proceeds to put a small black ball into her mouth; Shannon sees a grown man being breast-fed by his mother or wife; and Jared accidentally walks in on a group of men sacrificing three young women.

The band is then shown putting on traditional Chinese armor before meeting in an alleyway for a battle against four others who are dressed in identical armor. This scene is mixed with scenes of the band walking through the palace, encountering many peculiarities such as the tradition of leaving the dead in the bed for prolong periods and beheading of criminals. In the end, 30 Seconds to Mars is shown performing in the courtyard, with fireworks in the background.

At the end of the video, the band members end up fighting each other and four warriors. They wear masks, and thus cannot see who is who. The warriors are slain, and the band wind up in a stalemate. They slowly remove their masks, revealing that they are all alive.

  53. Jonathan  |   Posted on Jan 28th, 2008

It is an artist’s creation, open to all kinds of interpretation. Maybe someone should find out what 30 Seconds to Mars’ intentions were with this song/video. That said, I’ll put forth my interpretation. I’ve only seen the videos on Yahoo! music of “From Yesterday.” To me, there’s a lot of symbolism and imagery in the video, and the lyrics. I happen to think of the war in Iraq, etc.(and war in general), with this song. I don’t find any correlation between the guy whipping himself and The DaVinci Code, or Catholocism, or whatever. I think that war is an ongoing reality, and this video shows the dark sides of that. To me, the guy whipping himself is a symbol of many things. One could be, self-inflicted harm on the part of an individual, in any number of ways. Another could be that simply going to war inflicts harm(in many ways). I could go on, but those are some of my takes on this video. Remember, it’s an artist’s work. Anyone’s free to love it or hate it, or anywhere between. I happen to love it. I think it’s beautiful, intense, and thought-provoking… & more!
One more thing, when the four members of the band happen to come out of the fighting, while the other four fighters didn’t, it symbolizes to me that in war(or any type of fight, for that matter), the victors(or one’s who “make it”) are incredibly fortunate. Remember, in the beginning of the video, Jared Leto says he somehow just managed to escape.
    Cheers all! :)

  54. the voice of reason  |   Posted on Oct 12th, 2008

to Law: i got tired after 2 sentences of your hypocritical bullshit story…

you devode a whole section to spelling and sentences but still you try to shorten the word “reputation” with the word “rap” while i think the word you were looking for was “rep”… are you an hypocritical idiot or just an idiot…

but what bothers me most about your ignorant little speech is that you can’t just insult an entire social group… that’s too easy

don’t worry… we can’t all be intelligent xx

  55. Anon  |   Posted on Jan 5th, 2009

To “the voice of reason” you seemed to have made a mistake, “a bad rap” is an informal American phrase or idiom meaning “blame or punishment that is not fair”.

I hope this helps in some small way to alleviate the plague of ignorance spreading seemingly unstoppably through our society.

  56. Stephen  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2009

I have just seen that 30 seconds to Mars video shot in China is the most expensive ever!
I hjave just come back form filming in the same area, it is so cheap to film there. who took the 13 million.

  57. rainonme13  |   Posted on Jan 7th, 2010

okay, i absolutely love this video. does it matter that it makes sense to us? whats really important is if the band is happy with it. and in my personal opinion 30stm is ne of the greatest bands otu there. They arent greedy and they make their music as a way to express themselves. Its so stupid to say that somebodys music is crap. its the way they feel. if all you waste your life on is looking up bands to bash them on blogs then get a fucking life. i mean seriously.

also, i read somewhere that most of theyre videos are actually based off of books. i have no idea what book but if anybody gets any clue i would love to know. :)

  58. taren  |   Posted on Jan 19th, 2010

you guys are fucking assholes. jared leto doesnt sing in a band because he thinks hes the shit. his songs communicate real things and theyre not the easiest things to figure out so just because you cant figure it out doesnt mean he must just be singing random shit to get more popular. and the video is great. just because you think theyre just a bunch of emo faggots doesnt mean they are. if you want to see REAL emo kids go check up on Alesana or something. an ACTUAL emo band. stop talking about bands you dont know shit about.
