As we tend to go on tangents here, this is another artist that is but one man, performing under a band-like moniker. The UK’s Sleeping States is 23-year-old Markland Starkie, the purveyor of this sleepy, lo-fi gem that sounds like it was recorded on a cheap-ass 4-track recorder (it may have been). Whether intended or not, the recording’s narcotic, bedroom qualities are impressed upon the Velvet Underground sound in the guitars and tom-friendly drums, all while Markland’s stark, in-you-ear intimate vocals unfurl. And that mild touch of charmingly sincere Anglo-accent always helps.
