Everything about the live debut of “Wind It Up” at last night’s American Music Awards is so risiculous we don’t know where to fucking begin. Besides, well, the actual song — and this particularly cringe worthy vocal take — those Harajuku real dolls are freaking us out these days! Yet, we … are … mesmerized. Gwen can really get away with anything, can’t she? Watch on YouTube.

It’s sounds way too much like “Hollaback Girl”…. and I hate that fucking song.
Seems like she took the marching band thing and ran with it.

  2. no, that was horrible!

  3. Some Guy  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

Got to give it to her for successfully reinventing her appearance – now she looks like she’s really trying too hard.

  4. balls  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

ok, the hook for the song, yodeling……….and i still find myself extremely jealous of fucking rossdale. the woman is sexy, i want a high quality version of the video.

  5. This makes me wonder what chromosome people who like this are lacking.

  6. bunny  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

    it was awful.

i used to love gwen. :(

  7. Buckeye  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

I actually think it’s the people with the extra chromosome that like this! Sampling from the sound of music? ewwww.

i used to love gwen. :(

who are you trying to fool? that was the biggest load of crap that ive ever heard. terrible yodeling. TERRIBLE SONG. you could tell even the usually always polite and corporate puppet crowd didnt approve.

cmon stereogum. you didnt really like that.

  10. This shit is bananas.

    I miss No Doubt.

  11. matt  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

am i the only one who thinks gwen looks like a tranny?

  12. dude  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

no, she CAN’T get away with anything. especially taking a part of a rodgers and hammerstein song for her lame ass chorus.

    hello, sound of music!

  13. Rina  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

I don’t get it – The song is from The Sound of Music, but the doll dancing after being wound up by the key is from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

  14. Gwen used to be cool.

  15. Matthew  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

Yes, Chuck, people are obviously retarded if they don’t agree with you. Of course.

  16. some girl  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

yes, the hook is from the sound of music but it’s ill-fitting. and it DOES sound like hollaback girl — with the marching band bit which is old news now. it’s all cheesy as hell. btw, how do dance to this? or sing along? besides the hook, i can’t remember any part of the song.

gwen used to be able to do no wrong in my eyes BEFORE this album. the rest of the album is mediocre (at best). i miss no doubt. and she def looks like a tranny. it looks like she’s trying waaay too hard to reinvent herself. prolly because she was in a hurry to bounce back.

interscope should be ashamed of themselves for 1) releasing this track as its first single, 2) releasing an album so tepid, and 3) throwing so much money into the marketing plan for this oh-so blah album.

    tsk tsk.

  17. Are you fucking insane? This has to be the worst song I have heard all year. Possibly in years. When a singer can make me long for the brilliance of Fergie, ask for another live performance of “Promiscuous Girl”, or ask for the K-Fed lookalike to please return to the stage, then you know we’ve entered some real shit. At least I could flip over to Tony Bennett on NBC.

  18. David  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

Tony Bennett looks like a tranny.

  19. Nomiki  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

    That really was awful.
I feel bad for the kids who think she’s great.
    Music is dead.

  20. her hair is wig-tacular.

i bet i can run the lyrics through the speech thing on my computer. i bet the victoria setting would sound pretty similar.

  21. I was thinking she had kind of a Cher-30-years-ago thing going on.

    Also, that effing sucked.

  22. Zedd  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

Holy fucking shit, this song can get worse. She sounds horrible.

  23. Yeah, that performance was truly bad. She obviously has no idea what she’s doing outside of the recording studio anymore, and she obviously has people doing everything for her inside of it.

  24. Its one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard, but was it the live debut? I thought she performed it on the Jonathan Ross show a week or two ago.

  25. bethany  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

At least Fergie has the excuse of being a former meth addict.

  26. Dayne  |   Posted on Nov 22nd, 2006

That performance and song was painful in so many ways. Sorry Gwen.

  27. I think Gwen stefani bumped her head..she is like fergie and Paris hilton mashed up.
    wat an awful song.

  28. exfan  |   Posted on Nov 23rd, 2006

i used to think she could get away with anything, but not anymore. gwen has changed for the worse in every sense…she believed her own hype and is now oficially full of it. how can she be proud of this “song”? the whole album is an empty pantomime. even when she talks in interviews you can see her attitude is pretty arrogant, and she no longer has the music to back it up.
    oh well.

  29. Name  |   Posted on Nov 23rd, 2006

Dang, she sounded like a mix between an old lady and Macy Gray.

  30. godzilla thread killah  |   Posted on Nov 23rd, 2006

frankly baffling. i half believe this is some social experiment to see how tone deaf america is. i mean, the beat is not half bad, but the lonely goatherd part and really every bit of the lyric is excrable. i hope were not forced to hear this is much as we were forced to hear “hollaback girl.”

  31. Ekkostar  |   Posted on Nov 24th, 2006

I remember the first time I heard this, which was around last Saturday. I went “What in the hell is this shit?”. Too bizarre.

  32. ex-fan of gwen  |   Posted on Nov 24th, 2006

i want to vomit all over this song, all over gwen, and all over the neptunes for producing the song.

seems like people are just coasting on their past successes. the bigger they are, the harder they fall…

  33. Cindy  |   Posted on Nov 24th, 2006

    WTF!

I just sent a link to that performance to my 16 year old daughter and she replied, “I started to watch the “making of” that video and a little piece of me died!” Aren’t the 16 year olds her “target” audience?

Gwen used to be cool. I used to like her music. She used to have talent. What is she thinking these days? I miss No Doubt!

I’m out of touch with pop culture (I’m 29, rapidly aging out of the bracket) but I rely on sites like this to skim off the best and worst and…wow.

That was on national television? Really? That’s kind of awesome. Plus I love how people are more up in arms over yodeling than they are over homophobia. Cool.

  36. It looks like she has been programmed by MUGATU

  37. lazyconfessions  |   Posted on Nov 24th, 2006

    Shit, I miss No doubt!

Hope you were joking, I couldn’t even watch the whole video… and my ears hurt….

  38. Am I the only one who hears nothing but Blondie’s “Rapture?”

  40. I’d really rather have watched Text Message Breakup for the 100th time while listening to Diamanda Galas bathe my cat.

  41. Burn  |   Posted on Nov 25th, 2006

Didn’t know that song (I live on another planet)… awful…

  42. frankie  |   Posted on Nov 25th, 2006

tc, god i love diamanda galas.

    more than this tool. shit.

  43. lolo  |   Posted on Nov 26th, 2006

I have a fantasy where her Harajuku girls go completely berserker ninja on her while calling her names and speaking in Mall Girl.

  44. Matt  |   Posted on Nov 27th, 2006

Thanks for teaching me to hate mainstream culture again. I was debating on buying her album (sarcasm).

  45. this is a totally trying to capitalize on the whole baile funk thing. its like siouxsie and the banshees meets tigarah filtered through sesame street.

  47. i am sorry gwen but it sucks!!!

  48. gasp  |   Posted on Dec 11th, 2006

I dont get how you think that it sounded like holla back girl…at least that had a tune to it. This whole “song” comes out monotone. The yodelling alone is enough to make you want to turn it off….but my god, she looks like cleopatra went blond. Is she on drugs?? this is awful. I’m starting to think she’s trying to kill off her own popularity. She has had some of the most astonishingly beautiful photo shoots in her career. She didnt even come off this bad when she tried to go more rap than punk. This is just trash. I’m starting to think that No Doubt dumped her. I am terribly disappointed.

  49. Hallo!
