Turkey break is always a good time to hit the flicks, and one of the movies opening in time for the holiday is The Fountain, a trippy film about love and reincarnation, starring Wolverine and Rachel Weisz and set in the 16th Century, the 26th Century, and the present. And if you want that extra bit of surreality and emotion, you can do worse than grabbing Mogwai (ala Zidane) or Kronos Quartet (see: the Requiem For A Dream theme). Exactly what The Fountain folks did! Maybe enough to get us to spend the twelve bucks on a ticket to the theater. Or maybe we’ll just enjoy the free stream of the soundtrack here.

Did anyone see that Zidane documentary? We’re not soccer heads, but it looked sorta cool. Did Mogwai do for it what (the fucking awesome) Explosions In The Sky did for the Friday Night Lights movie? And by the by, who else is psyched for the new EITS? Temporary Residence is releasing the forthcoming All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone on 2/20/07, but here’s a listen of the new:

Explosions In The Sky – Welcome, Ghosts (QT)

Why can’t February be now?

  1. Is the Zidane even playing anywhere in the US? I’d definitely go see it.

When Hugh Jackman walked out onto Letterman last night, the band played “Jack U Off”

  4. I saw the Zidane documentary at MoMA last week. The directors did a Q&A after the movie and I seem to recall them saying that there aren’t any more plans to show it in the US.

The documentary was not a classic doc – there was hardly any speaking in it, and at least 95% of the footage was from one Madrid game from 2005. The Mogwai score was in over half the movie, and the rest was just sounds of the game and the crowd.

There were a lot of beautiful shots of Zidane though, and the Mogwai score was also beautiful of course.

Hell yes. Two of my favorite instrumental bands in one post! I’m extra excited about the new Explosions… CD. I love the little unexpected clips in the Friday Night Lights tv show. They must be making bank off that. Does anyone know if it is new and/or unreleased Mogwai material in soccer doc?

I’m extremely excited for the new Explosions in the Sky.
I actually just got my “Those Who Tell the Truth…” LP from Amazon a few days ago, and I’m all excited because all I’ve had for the past few years is a CD-R of it with no artwork, so it rules.

Requiem and Fountain were both directed by Aracofsky, so he probably had a hand in bringing Kronos back.

Umm yeah Aronofsky brought Kronos back, and more importantly he brought back Clint Mansell, of the excellent Pop Will Eat Itself fame, to score the music, which Clint has now done for all of Aronofsky’s films. Kronos Quartet is awesome and all, but it’s Mansell’s music they’re playing.

  10. Who’s seen the movie yet?

    BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.

    Seriously.

    Oh, and the music’s excellent.

Much appreciation for the Explosions link. I think the Mogwai material is new for the Zidane doc.

    Cheers

  12. the Fountain is awful. Better to listen to the music without the goofy storylines as distraction.

very excited about the new explosions in the sky though.

The Fountain is one of the greatest films I’ve seen in a very long time. It’s absolutely beautiful, stunning and thought provoking. And great performances to boot. Can’t wait to see it again.

I don’t think I’ve seen such disparate opinions on a film in a long time. I was looking on Fandango and the ratings were literally split between “Oh No!” and “Must Go!” With absolutely no “So-So’s.” I’m seeing it today, looking forward to it.

  15. so amazing to see this post! i had completely forgotten that the fountain had just come out recently, and now i have to go see it tonight.

to mallory: the mogwai material used for the zidane soundtrack is all new material and definitely worth finding when you get the chance. some of it is absolutely beautiful. i’ve seen some of it uploaded to file hosts like yousendit and rapidshare, and you can definitely find it on slsk also. if you go to google and type in “mogwai zidane rapidshare” or “zidane rapidshare” etc. you might be able to find it that way.

I think Ebert actually said it best (*warning – extreme paraphrasing ahead*) when he said something to the effect that The Fountain’s reach exceeded it’s grasp but the fact that it reached at all was what made it worthwhile. Really worthwhile film.

  17. The best tracks on Zidane are the two untitled tracks at the end. They’ll raise the hair on the back of your neck…
