Part Back Street Boy facial hair, part boy-band neo-soul croon, but you just can’t beat the holiday sentiment involved in SNL‘s Digital Short this weekend. (Though gift givers, if your “digital” is too short that box will never stay put!)

Watch the unedited version of the video here, and stick around for the “Homelessville” sketch, reprising his last visit’s hilarious “Omletteville.” Between those two and revisiting The Barry Gibb Talk Show with Fallon, it’s the best Xmas performance Timberlake has given since that classic “Jingle Bell Rock” 15 years ago.

A Mr. Show rip off, but nevertheless funny.

It is not a mr. show rip off. They had a similar theme to there song but the whole joke (a dick in a box) is original.

step 1: cut a hole in the box

step 2: put your junk in that box

    haha, good stuff.

  7. Pretty flagrantly a Mr. Show rip-off, from the hair to the clothes to the dance steps to the camera angles and so on. Yes, a different punch line, but ultimately a shot-for-shot remake. Not that I didn’t laugh.

  8. There was a completely different joke with Three Times One Minus One. It’s like doing a sketch that takes place in an office and saying it’s a ripoff of a Monty Python sketch that was about an office.

These Digital Shorts are funny, but they take a lot of comedic shortcuts.

oh, i totally thought it was “cock in a box” – i like that better. boo.

The saddest part is that there are guys who look like that and who now think this is probably a good idea.

  11. Leon  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

It’s more of a homage to the really bad set of the early-90s New Jack Swing R&B groups (think Color Me Badd), rather than the boy-band and neo-soul groups.

    But yes, hillarious.
First time I half-way watched SNL in a long time and found a handfull of skits entertaining.

  13. Really? A ‘completely different joke’? Aren’t both of the skits mocking the often crude sexuality of middle-of-the-road early-’90s R&B? Or was one of them a political allegory or something? No need to be precious about it – they’re both funny. But to say that the SNL skit is ‘completely different’ than the Mr. Show skit is being willfully disingenuous.

  14. The 3×1-1 skits were mocking R n’ B and its inherent stupidity, with the non-lyrics (“Ew, Girl, Ew”) and the completely unnecessary side man (“Damn”).

Dick in the box was a joke about putting your dick in a box as a Christmas gift for your lady. Then they slapped on a Color Me Badd vibe to make it funnier.

I see the similarities, what with them both being bad R n’ B duos, but I don’t see rip off.

Was Lazy Sunday ripping off Jim Belushi’s old white rapper character because they were both white and rapping?

  15. dudesweet  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

Not content with bringing sexy back he also brought Fallon back.

    Sigh….i’m an enormous tool

  16. Spencer  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

I thought it (the song at least) was more Kells than Color. Mainly because of “See, I’m wiiiiise enough to know…” (- “Your Body’s Callin’”)

  17. anon  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

The digital short made me laught out loud. I was totally unprepared for “It’s my dick in a box.”, but can someone please explain the “Barry Gibb Show” to me? Unfunny and irrelevant. Bleh.

  18. mattshu  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

If you want to hear the musical inspiration for that song check out anything from R. Kelly’s 12 Play. Especially “your body’s callin”.

Sadly, i know this very well.

  19. nick  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

what’s with stereogum’s newfound fascination with the term “neo-soul”?

  20. bojo  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

I actually thought this was pretty lame – did people really think this was that funny? Felt like the digital shorts were repeating themselves — early 90′s music parody (like Lazy Sunday, that Tom Hanks Thing) combined with a crude nonsequiter joke (like the Tom Hanks testicles joke). No real point to it besides famous people dressed up funny and saying naughty words. Am i being too harsh?

  21. I found it funny, bojo, but that’s what I was referring to when I said they were taking comedy shortcuts. They dress funny or talk funny or act funny because it gets laughs, then they add the non-sequitor to give the excuse to dress up a point. It’s funny, but it’s a wee bit lazy.

  22. El Payo  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2006

2+1-1 owns these fools. But still, it was pretty DAMN funny.

  23. Say what you want about Justin Timberlake, but he’s a much better singer than David Cross.

  24. Christopher  |   Posted on Dec 19th, 2006

The first handful of sketches on SNL last week were rather good. It’s odd how well-suited Timberlake is to SNL’s sensibilities and how good he is to warrant sketches with recurring characters of his own (two if i’m not mistaken).

And I always appreciate that Jimmy Fallon’s utterly worthless until needed as Barry Gibb. Kind of karmic for how smug and hip he is.

  27. clay jr  |   Posted on Dec 20th, 2006

People need to give it up with the “waa waa Mr. Show” crap. Jesus, what makes this brilliant is that Timberlake gives a MTV-worthy performance in a bit that self-parodies his boy band roots.

I am a huge Mr Show fan, and I didn’t think it was a rip off in the least. And ya, it is funnier when famous people say “naughty” words because they are breaking our pre-established views of them. If a meek timid girl in your office stubs her toe and yelled “Monkey-Fuck!”, you’d laugh to cuz it goes against character. Its the juxtaposition of what we think we know against what suprises us. And now, fuck you very much for me having to explain that to you elitists.

I don’t see the Mr. Show rip-off. They’re both riffing on a particular style of music in different ways.

This was one of the funniest SNL sketches I’ve seen in a long long time. It is just so funny on so many different levels. The outfits, the dance moves, the facial hair, the hand gestures, Justin’s vocal inflections, etc., etc. Definitely a true comedic gem.

  33. John  |   Posted on Dec 21st, 2006

wow, so the early 90′s boy band style of video like color me badd and others ripped off mr show by making their videos like that. the whole thing was just a spoof on boy band style of love music

  34. Kickactionjesus  |   Posted on Dec 21st, 2006

Difference = I laughed harder at this skit than an entire season of Mr Show. Mr. Show is not funny. If I can watch entire episodes of it and not laugh IT SUCKS. I hate the fuc*in hippie douche bags that suck the shows co*k all the time. Do you really like the show or do you like it because you think it is a cool thing to like? TOOLS.

  45. Dowie  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2006

I agree with one thing, this was funny. I couldn’t help but laugh. Probably cause it was crude. I thought it was c@ck in a box until I saw the un-edited version.
You can’t say this a rip off of Mr. Show’s TTOMO. That’s like saying once a joke about anything has been told you can never touch that subject. Is the Jamie Kenedy video Rolling with Saget a rip off Lazy Sunday? Angry white rappers but the content is diffent.
Plus the whole joke about TTOMO wasn’t just the Ew Girl, it was the interview on the… crap I wish I could remember the network White People Co-opting Black People Culture Network? Anyway the joke about that was white people singing that type of music it ran the whole episode (Video, Interview and the Omage awards at the end of the show)
    This was just a song.

It’s funny, I like the edited version better but NBC has told YouTube to remove for copywrite violation.

If you are a Saget fan check out Rolling with Saget, if you thought this song was a rip don’t bother you’ll just say this is lazy Sunday with terrible delivery.

    Cheers

  46. Dowie  |   Posted on Dec 22nd, 2006

For some odd reason I found the aired version funnier then the un-edited one, maybe cause I thought it was C@ck in a box (which sounds better to me) NBC has also asked YouTube to pull the censored version cause it violates copywrite law so if you recorded the episode watch out for Big Brother!

But to say this was a rip off of TTOMO from Mr. Show is stupid.

If you’re saying that then only one person is aloud to make fun of music.. and that’s Wierd Al so in essense they are all ripping him off.

Is the Jamie Kenedy video Rolling with Saget a rip off Lazy Sunday? Angry white rappers but the content is diffent. That’s like saying all music rips itself off. Do you listen to the radio? Most songs meld together broken up by strings of commersials.

The whole joke about TTOMO wasn’t just the Ew Girl, it was the interview on the… crap I wish I could remember the network White People Co-opting Black People Culture Network? It was relevant to the time it came as well since there was a huge rise of terrible soul bands(I thought they sucked anyways) Anyway the joke about that was white people singing that type of music it ran the whole episode (Video, Interview and the Omage awards at the end of the show) Mr. Show was an entirely different show then anything Saturday Night Live has ever done, for the most part each episode was a fantastically executed joke with almost seemless segways from video to live performance.

This was just a funny song.

If you are a Saget fan check out Rolling with Saget, if you thought this song was a rip don’t bother you’ll just say this is lazy Sunday with terrible delivery.

    Cheers
