Still one more day of clock-punching before we’re done with the oh six, but we know y’all have already deep thoughts about (and logged countless hours listening to) next year’s best albums. And though the “look ahead” is obligatory, the prospects are definitely hype-worthy. Some of the notables (album titles provided where possible):

The Shins – Wincing The Night Away
Is this the record to lose the indie kids? Is the album too “safe”? Regardless, this one will make ‘em this year’s Death Cab.
Bloc Party – A Weekend In The City
See above, replace “Death Cab” with “Coldplay.”
Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
Slated for April release, unless Merge gets click-happy again.
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Can someone say best OM ever? Expect this one on ’07 year-end lists. Totally amazing.
Deerhoof – Friend Opportunity
Same as above.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Some Loud Thunder
Fridmann’s stamp is already evident on the tracks the Clap has “released.” Expect it to be another love/hate affair.
Menomena – Friend And Foe
If you aren’t paying attention to this Portland trio yet, get involved; this record is fucking stellar.
Courtney Love – How Dirty Girls Come Clean
The live clips we heard have us officially psyched. Even if she is a lunatic.
Ted Leo – Living With The Living
We’ve been digging the demos since before SXSW. T&G finally delivers the goods in March.
Marrdest Mouse – We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
After the sweep of Johnny-infused gigs, there still wasn’t clear consensus on the Modest upgrade. But seriously, how could Marr be anything but awesome?
!!! – Myth Takes
We’ve just started listening to this one. Safe to say “Heart Of Hearts” is gonna be a go-to track in hipster DJ sets from the LES to London.
Apostle Of Hustle – National Anthem Of Nowhere
Andrew Whiteman’s second full-length with Apostle sounds great so far.
Air – Pocket Symphony
No surprise, we’re loving it. More 10,000 Hz than Moon Safari, and Jarvis and Nigel join in the fun. They had us at “Air.”
Scarlett Johansson – Scarlett Sings Tom Waits
Who knew? Scarlett can sorta sing. But we love us some Tom Waits — and so we’re afraid of the end result. Very afraid.
Apples In Stereo – New Magnetic Wonder
Yep Roc puts their muscle behind the Colbert-cameoing R. Schneider’s latest.
Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy
Yes, we’re still excited. No, we don’t actually expect it to come out in March.
Michael Jackson – TBD
Not exactly a man of his word, either.
Radiohead – TBD
Counting the days. Track their progress here.
Smashing Pumpkins – TBD
Counting the Jimmy Chamberlin MySpace blog posts. Track their progress here.
The Twilight Sad – TBD
The EP grabbed us, the live show did one better, and the band says neither hold up to the Peter Katis mixed debut full length, due next March.
Cat Power – TBD
Another record of covers, according to Venus. Better to put energies there than in schilling for diamonds.
Polyphonic Spree – The Fragile Army
This one’s political. And new costumes! Keep an eye on the blog.
Interpol – TBD
The band says album three sounds “great” so far.
LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver
5,000 joggers can’t be wrong.
Travis Morrison – TBD
0.1? Fingers crossed…

And…
Rufus Wainwright – Release The Stars
Lauryn Hill – Khulami Phase
Patty Griffin – Children Running Through
Wilco – TBD
Spoon – TBD
The Postal Service – TBD
Metallica – TBD
Gnarls Barkley – TBD
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – TBD
Duran Duran (Feat. JT)- TBD
Ryan Adams – The Complete Recordings (94 CD Set)

We know you list-happy listeners have already ranked your favorite records of 2007; we just ask that you help us separate the wheat from the chaff and tell us what YOU think will be the best of year next. (And what records we missed on the list.) To sweeten the pot: Guess ’07′s Gummy winning album and win everyone’s envious admiration! Good luck, gold ears.

The new Field Music sounds amazing so far.

  36. Bill Callahan – Woke on a Whaleheart. Just the thought of it made my top 10 of 2007.

  37. Loren  |   Posted on Dec 28th, 2006

It’s spelled Lauryn Hill, is it not? I wouldn’t be too surprised if Broken Social Scene managed to squeeze out a new LP as well. Low has a new one as well that isn’t listed here (even though I’m not the biggest fan). I’ve also heard rumors of a new Dr. Dre album.

…um, did you hear that Healers album?

  40. The Bees ’07 release is sounding like their best ever as well (although, no way to possibly pull another “Chicken Payback”).

I second the notion on the new Field Music. Awesome.

    2007 — best year in music….. EVER?!?!?!?

    Oh yeah heres more:

    Lily Allen (US debut)
    Maroon 5

    and…
AVRIL-FUCKING-LAVIGNE. I just wet my panties.

    and Timbaland too.

  54. isaac  |   Posted on Dec 28th, 2006

i have finally come to the conclusion that stereogum hates andrew bird and i am going to consider my boycott of my formerly favorite blog.

  55. Heck, I’ve already pre-ordered OM’s Hissing Fauna and can’t wait to hear it. Plus, I’m psyched for the upcoming Porcupine Tree (with Robert Fripp guesting, no less!) and Blackfield II.

And then there’s Somewhere Else from Marillion, which is just between you, me and the old-school proggers out there…

    DwD

P.S. We will also have to wade through two gazillion Ryan Adams burp-alongs. He and Robert Pollard should just do rock-paper-scissors for who gets to release.

  56. patrick wolf!

  59. The new Dredd Foole, Richard Swift, and Do Make Say Think are all solid.

    BRETT ANDERSON.

  63. Duran Duran featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. Due in May.

  64. brian  |   Posted on Dec 28th, 2006

Aren’t the Jicks due for one? Seems as though they were recording this past year.

  65. as if there should be any question, the new Of Montreal will sweep the whole hipster community out of their Urban flats and into a dancing frenzy of lovelovelove.

  66. Missing from the List:
Hella – There’s No 666 In Outer Space
The Six Parts Seven – Casually Smashed to Pieces
Explosions in the Sky – All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone

    Jesu – Conquerer
    Devendra Banhart – Smokey
    Dntel – Dumb Luck
Klaxons – Myths of the Near Future
    and of course…

ANDREW BIRD – armchair apocalypse (i might even join that one guys boycott)

come on! and also if you edit or update a post you should make it known on the post. That’s the responsible thing to do at least.

  67. its all about the patrick wolf in February…

maybe something from bullet train to vegas.

  73. will  |   Posted on Dec 28th, 2006

Six Buddy Stank Finger, Bingo Jet Hadda Light On…

  80. Oh yeah, the Stooges..

  81. Idlewild, The Frames

  82. More missing from the list:
re-united Afghan Whigs – best-of compilation with some brand new tracks (!) I believe
    RJD2 (I think)
    Spiritualized – TBD
    Wolf Parade – TBD
    British Sea Power – TBD
    Feist – TBD
    The National – TBD
    The Go! Team – TBD
    Stereolab (I think)
    Britt Daniel – solo album
The Ponys – Turn The Lights Out
Husky Rescue – Ghost Is Not Real

And although they’ve been mentioned, I just have to bring up The New Pornographers and Explosions In The Sky again.

Looks to be an amazing year!

Go Bid on these, I just one a pair for 10 bucks, someone else should jump on these. I’m a good friend to the indie community. Should be amazing.

  84. yeah-i miss the old, witty, pretentious stereogum…i think you guys added new writers & me no likey.

    chris garneau? julie doiron?

  87. Loren  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

    Thought of a few more:

Kanye West – “Graduation” I believe it’s called? (God how I hate that guy!!!!)

I think we’ll see another Raconteurs album, or maybe even a secretly recorded White Stripes (even though I know he’s denied it; they’re sneaky like that!)

Go! Team and Wolf Parade are definitely coming, and so is a Dungen I think (remember them?)

P.S. Yes new Shins is “safe” aka boring. Has every band of this new “generation” lost their mojo? Strokes, Shins, Wilco (not a fan of the new slow rockers)…

    GO Kings of Leon!!!

  88. Aereogramme – “My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go” will be sublime.

Glassjaw and Frank Turner should also have new albums out.

  89. Shirley Manson’s solo album, Courtney Love, Interpol, The Rentals, and any small glimmer of hope that Portishead finishes their 3rd.

  90. so many good albums. can’t wait!

and come on now, bloc party >>> coldplay. well, i hope they won’t turn into coldplay.

  91. Yes, British Sea Power

  92. What about Lewis Taylor’s “The Lost Album” eh?
    US-release January 30 (Hacktone Records)

  93. Kristin Hersh- “Learn to Sing Like a Star”

it’s hands-down one of her best albums yet. It’s out in January.

  94. will  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

  98. JESSE MALIN – Glitter In The Gutter (February ’07)

  99. matt  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

No Stephen Malkmus? No Andrew Bird? Please. I might have been okay with the skipping of these great artists, but you had Travis Morrison’s album. Now I love T-Mo as much as the next guy – The Plan are one of my favorite bands ever. But his first album really really sucked. And no one was more excited for it to come out, and no one was more disappointed when it did. It came out on my birthday and it ruined my day. But put some malk on there. and some bird.

  100. bigphil  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

Jet have already released something out this year. It’s called “Shine On”. They completely ape the Beatles (or Oasis, depending on who you ask) so beware. And lets not forget that AVRILLAVIGNE is releasing a new album. Like omigod.
