The Godfather Of Soul may have terrorized his last concert stage, but his dramatic life and times will live on in celluloid, courtesy of a Spike Lee-directed, Brian Grazer-produced biopic. This from Variety:
Brown was an active part of the development of the biopic project. The singer met with Baigelman, and gave the Butterworth brothers access to his camp. Brown’s longtime sideman Bobby Byrd also was interviewed for two days by the Butterworth duo. The rights package includes Brown’s life rights, and also access to all his music rights.“Like everybody, I was surprised and saddened that James Brown died,” Grazer said Tuesday. “Having known him well, and after spending lots of time with him and researching his life, it’s somehow not surprising that he died on Christmas Day. He was the ultimate showman, all the way to the end.”
True. Anyway, seems everyone is getting in on the “who to cast” guessing game. Page Six calls Usher an early fave to play JB and reports that Fergie wants to play one of Brown’s wives. But James’s career spanned 53 years, so whomever they choose to play the man best have some range. Give us your best guess as to the actor best fit to take on the legend — and yeah Don Cheadle is awesome, but creative casting is even better! And for bonus points, riddle us this: Elvis’s home became Graceland; should JB’s become SoulLand?

Most of the comments show an extreme lack of respect for someone who was an elder statesman of music. It’s a shame that people would put thought into comments regarding a one album hit wonder such as the Arctic Monkeys than about the freaking god father of soul. No wonder most music today sucks ass, the majority of the people who read this blog probably never listened to the forefathers who perfected the horrible garbage we call music today. RIP James Brown.

In 1987, James Brown was arrested for drug abuse for the fifth time in ten months. His resistance to the police, an attack on his wife and the illegal possession of arms made it worse. In December 1988 he was convicted of the attempted murder of his wife and sent to prison for six years. [On February 9, 2001, Curtis Martin sent us the following comment: In the article on James Brown in your ish # 11 you state that JB was convicted of the attempted murder of his wife. He was in prison for threatening people in an office rental property of his, and then trying to evade the cops in a cross-state chase. Still not cool, but also not murder. After a year of legal and personal troubles, he led the police on an interstate car chase after allegedly threatening people with a handgun. The episode ended in a six-year prison sentence; he was paroled after serving two years].
In April 1990, after only having spent 15 months at the State Park Prison in Columbia, South Carolina, James Brown was moved to a reintegration center for good conduct. During that period, he produced radio and television contributions warning against alcohol and drug abuse. In February 1991, he was released on the condition that he neither drove or possessed firearms.
Wayne Brady is the same idea I had. I’m glad to see other people say so. Wayne has the energy and talent to do this. I don’t see any of those other guys doing it. He has both the subtlety and outrageousness to accomplish this, as well as the outright talent.
