That’s right, no more Bait Shop, no more Seth and Summer, and no more misguided covers soundtracks. Via Reuters:

Fox has pulled the plug on “The O.C,” which collapsed in the ratings this season.

During its four seasons on the air, “The O.C.” also generated buzz around the indie music featured in its episodes and spawned six soundtracks.

“This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close,” said creator/executive producer Josh Schwartz. “Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top.”

Although Alec Baldwin made that a difficult claim to verify some weeks, the show was definitely showing signs of recovery post-Oliver. But the real shame is that they never got around to shooting the much-hyped Kim Jong-Il cameo episode.

Bummer. As much as the music directors tried to stay a step ahead of indie tastes — sometimes successfully — we all had those moments were we cursed ‘em for co-opting a little gem, soon to send every MySpacer rushing to iTunes and Ticketweb. couldn’t help but be a little shocked to hear thom yorke’s ‘black swan’ a couple months back. i don’t think that I, nor thom, saw that one coming.

  2. The only music that might of been appropriate was Phantom Planet and Rooney (and maybe the Thrills)

Elliott Smith??? Yeah I’m sure the demographic of this show appreciated him…

  3. None of them annoyed me but I was pleased to see them show some love for The New Year by using both “The End’s Not Near” and then having Band of Horses cover the tune on the covers compilation.

  4. i’m completely shocked. i have never seen an episode of the OC, and while i knew that they had a reputation for choosing good music (some of the time), and i read about people like Lady Sov, Tom Vek and Phoenix featuring songs on it, i had no idea how many artists i love and respect had songs here. doesn’t really bother me. sometimes we just have to accept that cool people with great taste in music landed that kick ass music supervision position that we all wish we got.

I wanted to start slicin’ up eyeballs when I saw “Debaser”. Also, Solomon Burke aka The New Ruben Studdard.

Matt Pond PA (who are absolutely useless to begin with) played the most watered-down, nauseatingly pathetic version of “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.” It was a moment when I realized I was too old and had too much taste to be watching the OC or to even know of the existence of such a worthless, piece-of-shit, milquetoast band. Their CDs should come with a warning label “Intended For Audiences Aged 15 and Under.” Jeff Mangum probably turned over in the rock he’s hiding under.

i couldn’t decided whether i should be pissed about the song or worried about seth on the open sea.

seth was a pirate. “arrrg, stop putting good music in the hands of fools everywhere mateys! key-yar”

  12. brendawg  |   Posted on Jan 4th, 2007

I knew it wasn’t as good as 90210.

  16. I never got really truly mad about any of the songs on there, even though I’d be watching and singing along before going “oh, wait…how do THEY know this song??!”. But it fit though and it didn’t seem to be about coolness for coolness’ sake (even though we all know it was.)

The most mad I ever got though was when the show first started and I found out they were using Phantom Planet for the theme. Next thing I know it’s on my senior slide show. I was over it by the time season 3 rolled around.

This show was fun camp for the first year and a half; Season 3 totally flushed all fun down the toilet.

i believe it was an imogen heap cover of hallelujah.

  24. brendan  |   Posted on Jan 4th, 2007

well actually (and i cant believe im saying this), they ended season 1 w/ the buckley version and season 2 with the imogen heap. the producers were quite proud of this creative “continuity” as i recall

frankly, the thing that disturbs me most is that a band exists called “all sad girls are beautiful”.

  30. matty  |   Posted on Jan 5th, 2007

they lost the right to use “Hallelujah”, after west wing used it much more poignantly in their season 3 finale…oh well. and man, that is some serious hating on mpPA, yikes, take your meds…

  32. Definitely Imogen Heap. Have you heard her cover of “Hallelujah?” Tons of other artists too, the Dandy Warhols, The Killers, ROONEY! “California” was a lovely song.

  33. $20 bucks says the show ends with “So Long, Sweet Summer” by Dashboard Confessional playing in the background while the ghost of Marissa comes back and slaughters everyone in the surrounding area.

    “To Be Alone WIth You”

    Sufjan.

No one that far away from the Midwest or a Protestant church has any business doing anything with this song.
