For the next installment in our never-ending quest to determine whether J. May is funny or is just funnier than you’re average rock star, we turn to Varsity Basketweaving, who reviews John’s surprise, January 5th at The Comedy Cellar — in ten-point format. (via The Apiary)
1. Crashed the announced 11:30 p.m. lineup that included heavyweights and Comedy Cellar regulars Godfrey (who delivered possibly the funniest set I’ve ever seen in person), Dave Attell, Jim Norton and Sherrod Small.2. Wore standard stand-up fare: dark sweater and jeans.
3. Admitted “Yeah, I’m the ‘Daughters’ guy,” then proceeded to sing amusing alternate lyrics to the song with that distinctive Mayer lilt.

8. Avoided any mention of Jessica Simpson. (Draw your own conclusions.)
9. Checked his Blackberry to see if he forgot any jokes. Made fun of himself for doing so.
10. Made the audience laugh consistently during his set of about 10 minutes.

We (and by we, I mean you) need to collectively take Paul Anka’s adivce with this guy: “just don’t look”. Maybe he’ll go awawy.
Hate to break it to you, but someone who is nominated for 5 grammys (and has won grammys in the past) doesn’t just “go away”. Not gonna happen.
How come no one has video from these stand-ups? C’mon comedy bloggers, get your act together.
Anyone who prefaces a comedy review with talk of Godfrey delivering the funniest set he’s ever seen in person instantly loses any/all cred.
John Mayer is awesome. The man makes good music and does his stand up thing on the side. Let the man live. I swear, if a band’s isn’t filled with a bunch of “unique” and “indie” nonsense, people just write them off as nothing. Or worse, “pop music”.
Don’t write this excellent guitarist off as just another pop act.
Ya, I hate it music is unique. What we need is more generic Grammy nominated artists.
I’m sorry my “cred” doesn’t meet your uncompromising standard, 518th Steve. And please say hello to the friendlier 517 Steves for me.
Material-wise, I think Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld are the best stand-ups I’ve ever seen recorded. But Godfrey’s set was the funniest I can remember seeing in person, at least in recent memory. I’m sure many of my fellow audience members that night would vouch for how hilarious it was. If you weren’t there, don’t judge.
