As part of the Country Hall Of Fame honored Louvin Brothers, Charlie wrote songs that shaped commercial country music in the ’50s and ’60s, and later left a mark on alt-country, being covered by Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, and Uncle Tupelo. Now approaching his 80th birthday, Charlie releases his first studio effort in ten years, a collection of Louvin Bros. classics and country standards that caught our interest for its collaborations with Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Lambchop (Kurt Wagner and Paul Burch), Bright Eyes (Alex McManus), and Superchunk, among others. Here, Charlie is joined by Will Oldham on the mandolin-colored traditional, “Knoxville Girl.”

Other highlights include “The Christian Life” with Clem Snide’s Eef Barzelay, a gorgeous rendition of a tune that’s also crept its way into The Raconteurs live shows, and “Ira,” about his brother whom he lost in a car crash in ’65. It’s the sort of record that even country haters can get behind, and though the guests got us on board, Charlie’s voice is the star. Louvin’s supporting the record (and celebrating his 80th) with a national tour, including a stop at SXSW. We’re hoping for a few cameos at that one.
Charlie Louvin is out 2/20/07 on Tompkins Square.
Enjoy.

Good stuff, but isn’t it Clem Snide’s Eef Barzelay? Not trying to be a nitpicker, I just really am right confused.
link appears to be broken
sorry, link fixed! yeah stephen it’s eef, and the song is sooo good.
He’s playing Bonnaroo too.
Knoxville Girls Rule. Go VOLS!
no, amrit, i think stephen meant that clem snide is the band and eef barzelay is the man and therefore it would be clem snide’s eef barzelay and not eef barzelay’s clem snide, unless you’re saying that the band clem snide, which is eef barzelay’s project, collaborated with charlie louvin. but i don’t think that’s what you’re saying. then again, you could be saying that eef barzelay owns some strange musical contraption called a “clem snide” that charlie louvin used to record a song. is that what you’re saying? and by the way, are you also saying that clem snide now performs with the raconteurs? i’m so confused. is eef barzelay a raconteur or a clem snide? and while we’re at it, is satan real? maybe i should ask charlie louvin.
Yo Satan is Real, dude
No Louvin Bros = no Everly Bros = no Beatles. The Louvins are the best brother duo in the history of the universe.
Charlie Louvin is the best. What a haunting rendition of “Knoxvile Girl.”
I will soon be 73 in June. and Ihave played music since I was 6 years old . Now my own children play music on their own and my husband plays steel guitar. and I have never heard a duet sing like the Louvin Bros. They were the best in harmony singing.I ever heard in my life. they made chills run up my spine. I still love Charlie and when ira was killed I know it really broke his heart for a while and a part of him was missing. it broke my heart.to. Ira was the best tenor singer in the world. And none can compare to Charlie. I know it was hard on him after his brother passed away. They were the best. Dollie WV.
