This site has compiled a chart with the name, age, and cause of death of over 300 premature rockstar fatalities. The site then set the average age of premature rockstar deaths along side the average age of American deaths, driving home a striking fact: When rockstars die prematurely, they are younger than when Americans die in general. Shocking.

Head over for the full list, which includes Tim and Jeff Buckley, John Bonham, no Elliott Smith(?), Frank Zappa, and a whole lot more. Also, the site is asking you to choose between “fear of the lord” and being a rockstar with a handy checkbox test at the bottom (“I Choose Life” or “I Choose Death”). We haven’t voted yet.

Interesting question that. Do you choose Jesus or music? When did these become mutually exclusive?

  2. how the heck any of the Rolling Stones, but particularly Keith Richards is still going is amazing.

I chose death but then I changed my mind cause they showed me a textbook picture of the core of the earth that apparantly contains “fire”, which proves the existence of hell!

A sample of 321 rock stars that are known to have died prematurely only shows that rock stars that die prematurely don’t live as long, on average, as rock stars that don’t die prematurely (or the general public). What am I missing?

  5. mama cass died of a heart attack, she didn’t choke like that website said- that was a hypothesis before the report came in that became a rumor. Don’t know if that’s the only mistake.

    I Wanna Rock! (ROCK!)

  7. Moses is right. This is useless unless you include more rockstars who _didn’t_ die. Otherwise, the only way it would be a good chart statistically if it compared rock stars who died at age 27 with people who died in car crashes at age 27.

Nice semi-comprehensive list of rockstar deaths, nonetheless.

  8. a good comparison would be suicides, ODs, etc, between rock stars and non-rockstars. But how do you define a rock star? Are we going with album sales? Lead-singers only? Or are we going to count all the bass players who went on to careers as politicians? (I’m looking at your Krist).

  9. What category do you put someone in who committed suicide because they discover they have AIDS so they overdose on drugs and alcohol and then choke to death on their own vomit?

  10. c’mon stereogum… ELLIOTT SMITH. 2 T’s!!

this site gets shittier by the hour.

What about coal miners? With their shortened life expectancy, does that make them bad people too?

  12. I picked death…then I rejected jesus as my savior…..then I had a really long page that outlined hell…..then I was asked for my e-mail address and that of my friends…brilliant

    Choose Life

  14. Bob Stinson did not die of a heart attack. His body just gave out after years of abuse.

And no Richey from the Manics? Does anyone really think they guy’s not dead? That he’s writing a massive novel somewhere in a cave in the Galapagos?

JESUS only lived til like thirty three. Does that make him a horrible person?

  16. jesusismyhomiebleech  |   Posted on Jan 22nd, 2007

nope it means he was a rock star

What a bunch of assholes, blaming a person’s profession (and by proxy, the person themselves) for deaths like cancer, stroke and murder. Then they have the nerve to get all “holier than thou” and act like Jesus is their super-very-best-friend. I wish these hypocrites would read the bible because I remember Jesus saying along the lines of “Don’t worry about the speck in your neighbor’s eye when there is a log is yours”.
Oh, and by the way, jesusismyhomiebleech wins the internet.

  18. They should do a comparison of the number of rock star pederasts vs. those in the clergy.

How does this site explain Keith Richards, Ozzy Osborne, and numerous others..rockin’ for decades, still not dead! Oh, let me guess…they are the Antichrists.

  20. “Do you choose Jesus or music? When did these become mutually exclusive?”

    Creed.

The thing that bothers me most about the list is that it don’t say anything about the fact Marvin Gaye’s murder was committed by his father, who was a minsiter…
Which leads me to my hypothesis that all these Rock Star Deaths are caused by the covert efforts of Bible-thumpers like these guys trying to corrupt the youth of America (and the world) by making them mindless slaves to hymns.
In the words of Pink Floyd, WE DON’T NEED NO THOUGHT CONTROL!

And Jesus totally WAS a rock star!

you are missing some artists, like the rest of the ramones (johnny ramone and dee dee ramone). just to let you know.

  23. You forgot one of the most significant death’s in the rock/grunge era, Layne Staley, whom my child is named after!!!!!

Get it right if you’re going to do it!

Yeah like someone said, this isn’t an appropriate sample. Someone doesn’t no how to do stats lol… a sample has to be an accurate representation of the population meaning out of the population of all “rockstars” that existed, “rockstars” must be choosed randomly to create a SAMPLE population. I don’t see any deaths from the good ole old age killer: “natural causes.”

Also I agree w/ that one guy, what consists of a “rockstar”… you can live fast and be a nobody as well… and vice versa.

This wasn’t even SUPPOSED to be statistically scientific. It is just a list of music celebrities who died before the age of 60. It is a come on to get the gullible to make a choice at the end. Naturally, I had to reject the imaginary Jesus. Whoo hoo! Then the threats of hellfire and damnation including the old fake recording of the souls in hell when the door was drilled. But it was deliciously silly. Thanks for my morning chuckle.

    I CHOOSE FUCKING DEATH.

  27. I was wondering where all the people that play Christian Rock fit in on their list. There are lots of bands that play rock and roll for Jesus sake. Playing and loving rock doesn’t make you a sinner!

So artists die younger than insurance salesmen.
