Winners were announced for the 2007 BRIT Awards, and despite the media and MySpace love, field-leading nominee Lily Allen (with 4 nods) went home empty handed. But conspiracy-theory Lily saw it coming. She spoke to MTV UK on the red carpet before the show:

I already know I won’t win any awards. I bet you £100 I’ll get nothing. The judging committee are all industry insiders and they’re predominantly from Universal (Records) – and I’m on EMI. I think you’ll find that 70% of the artists here tonight are on Universal. I’ll leave you with that…

We dug around, and more than half of the awards (7 of 13) did go to Universal-affiliated artists: James Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Take That, Nelly Furtado, two for The Killers, and Orson. Does 53.8% = smell fishy? Maybe, maybe not, but Take That winning best single stinks like shit. Full list of winners and shady label affiliations after the jump.

UPDATE: Well we’re a few percentage points closer to conspiracy! The Fratellis’ label Fallout Records is a subsidiary of Island, itself a part of the Universal Music Group. That makes 8/13, or 61.5%. Good eye, Kieran!

Over/Under on the first “Who the Hell is Orson?” comment: 13 minutes.

The Fratellis are Universal too! Fallout is another indie under the Island Records (Universal) umbrella.

So now that makes it 8/13 so here’s the new figure: 62% (well 61.5%).

as far as i see it, any awards show that dons the Arctic Monkeys their best band has already lowered its credibility. you’re better than that lily.

Which awards are fan-voted and which are decided by the judges?

I think she really should have won the Betty Boo award of “most likely to be forgotten by june”.

i liked betty boo. i probably shouldn’t admit that out loud.

i thought the brits had at least a little bit more credibility than the grammys.

that winner’s list proved me wrong.

She’s fine (and kinda right), let her run her trap.

annie onymous, i’m not seeing “my humps” anywhere on this list.

Other Lily Alien conspiracy theories :

1/ She’s actually Kelly Osbourne without the fat brother.

2/ she’s actually Elton John with a longer wig

3/ She’s actually a genuine alien, her race have their buttholes in place of their mouth which explains her songs and her face.

4/ She’s so full of herself that she cannot believe that people actually think she sucks, she’s not respectable or talented not even interesting, that she’s just last season perfume, a product.
At least she knows her time is up, she’s already giving english lesson on french tv France 4.

i dont see much difference between “my humps” and “I bet you look good on the dancefloor” or the “doesn’t look a thing like jesus” song that i cant be bothered to learn the title of.

  12. bryan  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2007 0

are you serious? both of those songs are infinitely better than “my humps.”

even if you don’t like them, you have to agree that they took some musical ability/shred of talent to play. “my humps” took absolutely none of either of those things.

The “Best Single” category was a public text message vote, hence Take That winning. Take That were incredibly popular in the UK years ago. I think their comeback has made a lot of people reminiscent and soft headed -unfortunately-. I thought the majority that won awards on Wednesday eve were well deserved and a good reflection of the UK’s popular music taste. Lily will get here chance next time.

oh lily, i think you’re cute but i wish you’d just shut the hell up for once.

but boo! to the poster for not knowing that the public decided the best single winner. they’re the equivalent of the mtv viewer’s choice awards, hence they’re always going to suck!

Why is it that there’s an article about Lily Allen on here at least once a week?

I dont know if it’s an elaborate joke or if you actually think she’s a good and noteworthy musician, but you’ve got to stop this.

Awe, that’s no fun. I like Lily Allen and I’m glad when articles about her are posted on Stereogum.
