See how the guys are all waiting for Craig to give ‘em the go ahead to start rocking out their Brooklyn practice space and Galen is just casually reading John Berryman in the interim? That’s called foreshadowing! (Even if there’s no discernible payoff when we get to the “devil and John Berryman took a walk together” line.) Nothing really happens ’til the end (and even then, nothing really happens), but still it’s amazing that a song dealing with the Minneapolis suicide of an alcoholic beat confessionalist poet can sound so, triumphant. Leave it to THS and their Dolby cassettes.

Berryman a “beat poet”???
Stereogum, get thee to an English class!
when I see that guy’s face it makes me aggressive and I want to punch him. very few things in life make me more aggressive then the hold steady and their consistently shitty music
Better yet, get that guy Paul — who can’t find the capitalization key or the punctuation keys or spell ‘than’– to an English class.
Fantastic video…funny ending.
i love it when people’s only retort to blog posts is to critique their spelling or punctuation
nice one mr. bones! you GOT ME!
Yeah dude, you should have also totally highlighted the fact that he said the video made him “aggressive” (twice!) and wants to punch things. Not only do the Hold Steady get him all hot and bothered, I think we need to issue a tough guy warning so innocent bystanders don’t get their faces punched in should “Stuck Between Stations” come on near Paul.
ugh. i can never keep my beats and confessionalists straight! haa. sorrrry.
Hey tough guy Paul, why don?t you stick to listening to your Hinder record and high fiveing your football friends.
I hate commenters. Fight! Fight! Enjoy the video! Fight! Fight!
why did you watch it, paul?

I love it when people don’t know the difference between a blog post and a comment on a blog post. Also, I’ll happily critique the substance of the comment (as opposed to its poor syntax), which was irrelevant whining about the band itself that had nothing to do with the video about which the post was written, although I’ll refrain from my own irrelevant whining about those darn emotionally-imbalanced teenage boys who can get worked up enough to want to punch someone based on something as inoffensive and tangential to their lives as a music video posted on Stereogum.
This song reminds me of Josh Ritter’s Animal Sounds… only, you know, if you got him drunk first and then handed him an electric. What wonderful ass-kickery!!!
Shoot, we’ve spent 25-30 years trying to preserve what cool is left in rock so The Kids can go ga-ga over Born to Run? And then all you can do is cry over syntax and ignorance of case rules? Wah-wah.
why do people even bother responding to people’s disgruntled comments. Had the comment been positive would people have picked apart the syntax?
this is the dumbest comment I’ve seen in ages. Please call your boyfriend or girlfriend or family and do something other than write lame comments like this.

Wow, I’ll stick up for my friend g. — which is to say, it took that intelligent woman about 10 seconds to rattle off that concise, well argued and impeccably worded retort to paul. and she can decide for herself how she wants to spend her time — talking to her family/loved ones, responding to idiotic blog comments, picking her toenails, whatever. this risks becoming a meta-discussion of comments, but anyone who writes a comments chastising a comment made in response to a comment is is waste of time, is, well… we could all be here a long time. peace.
those hold steady guys totally rock though.
Not a big fan of the music videos that I have seen these guys do, but I do like their sound.
i like franz
I agree enjoy the fun, I know I did. Thought I saw my name on that last package they were sending out, cool!

hey g! Poor syntax!? What about your stupid blathering run on sentence. Just post about the content of the blog and leave the literary critiques to the professionals that really know how to use big words. That being said, the music is pretty good, and although the vocals are a little run together, this video beats most of the unintelligable rap and ghetto music, fat booty non singing media whores, and crack induced wannabe rockers.
hey craig, you don’t need to play guitar to make us think you’re cool. just sing.
well this comments thread has made me smile – i love it when people think slagging each other off in a comments thread is a legitimate way to argue. so to add my lame two bobs worth…. corey, a) are you really into hardcore? and b) do people call you hardcorey?
and yeah, why do singing frontmen so often have guitar complexes?

I like when peeps make negative comments about a band and then vaguely make threatening comments but misspell words but then some other douche bags comments on that guy’s spelling and punctuation but dude comments back complaining about spell checkers but some other loser writes that she doesn’t like peeps that don’t know the difference between bloggers and commenters and uses words like syntax to show that she is really smart before some freak has to stick up for the other dude, and then some girl has to stick up for her 300 pound lesbian friend because she has the right to do what she wants.
