Bill turned in our single favorite set of this year’s SXSW, performing old Smog stuff and new tunes with Joanna Newsom, and we’ve been remiss in not giving you our premature evaluation of Woke On A Whaleheart. So we’ll do it now: it’s one of Stereogum’s faves of ’07 so far. Check “Sycamore,” with an extended note chorus you’ll sing all day. That baritone knows all.

Woke On A Whaleheart is out 4/17 on Drag City.

I don’t understand why there hasn’t been a “premature evaluation” for this album yet. It leaked months ago. And yes, it is amazing.

Maybe Stereogum and Pitchfork should just merge… This track has been available for weeks on the Drag City site, but for some reason you both post it today.

His recent intimate FADER magazine gig with girlie Joanna was amazing, at the awesome National Arts Club. Lou Reed was there, and sitting right behind us. Bill’s voice is amazing, and I am so looking forward to a larger performace soon in NYC.

  5. I was kind of bummed Joanna Newsom didn’t perform at the FADER party.
