From the folks that brought you Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian comes a new sister label Dead Oceans, and DO is getting off to a solid start with its inaugural release, the first proper studio album from perennial blog faves Bishop Allen. Last year, Justin, Christian et al set their buzz machine to churn at regularly scheduled intervals, releasing an EP a month for the course of the year. For their Dead Oceans release Bishop Allen And The Broken String, the Brooklyn indie pop band culled their ten faves from those twelve EPs and took ‘em into the studio for their first record outside the bedroom. The album boasts twelve tracks, meaning two are truly new, including “Rain,” a typically infectious slice of BA’s buoyant hooks and sunshiny day melodies.

So to recap, that’s Bishop Allen And The Broken String, out on Dead Oceans 7/24. The good Bishop will tour in support of the album in July and August, kicking off with a show at the South Street Seaport (pigeons love it there) with Rock Central Plaza 7/20. More dates when we get ‘em.

  4. Wasn’t Charm School their first studio release?

  5. I can’t say as I dig the pigeon outfits much. I do like her shoes though; they look suspiciously like a pair I own.

i think charm school was basically self-released, as well as all 12 of their eps.

have to say, though, it kinda feels like you’re stealing you aint no picasso’s thunder on this one, stereogum. but whatever…i say: awesome band!!

  7. BTW, does anybody know how to get on Stereogum’s “The Cool Kids” list? I see some blogs there that are kind of like mine, so I sort of wondered. I emailed them at tips at stereogum.com, but, not surprisingly, I didn’t get any replies. If anybody knows and feels like telling me, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

    Bishop Allen = Flying Rats?

Oh, most definitely. They keep dropping their shit from the sky, too. Please guys, stop making your twee pop and painful “films,” and get that job in i-banking like good Harvard grads, so you can write about it for the alumni newsletter.

I haven’t read a negative comment in awhile that has made me laugh. Come on phil, sven and whoever else. Make us laugh with your negativity… that’s the whole point, right?

Or maybe you just hate your day job too much?

  14. Well, I think it’s now possible to make a mix disc entirely of songs titled “Rain”.

  15. Yeah, it’s like every artist has to have a song with the word “rain” in it… Evanescence, Phil Collins, Hil Duff… need I go on? Get a life and move if you don’t like the rain. But quit singing about it for Pete’s sake.

I haven’t heard a note of their music, yet they annoy me. I blame YANP.

    that pic is so hot

  18. Haters wanna hate. There’s a million bands out there who are better suited to be made fun of. This band works hard and has done it on their own, up until now, and actually has a sense of humor about themselves (thank god). So if you don’t like the music, fine. But you’d be an idiot not to like it. Go listen to some whiny bitches who take themselves too seriously…like Arcade Fire.

  19. This was on The August EP as “The Flood”. Live version, but still, it’s not that new.

I don’t think anyone would blame them if they wanted to have a little break after last year, I’m still digesting the EPs, but I don’t think the people who bought them are gonna thank Bishop Allen for releasing an Album with only one new song on it. If they do something different with them, maybe, but otherwise it’s a little disappointing.
