A blossoming debate for TV Standards & Practices nuts: Is saying (or in Tori’s case, spelling) “MILF” indecent and offensive? This week’s Entertainment Weekly happened to speak with four anonymous TV execs about permissible phrases, one of whom hit upon the Mother:

One of the things we have to do, whether it’s by using “You suck” or “MILF,” is to evolve. Expressions or usages become popularized. I don’t think we want to be part of a corasening of the culture, but I suspect even in Peoria, Illinois, there are words regularly used on playgrounds that we still don’t allow on our network.

“MILF,” ever the grade school staple, arguably attained critical mass awareness with American Pie, though judging by Ms. Amos’s “Big Wheel” performance on Letterman, a Stifler sanction ain’t enough for S&P. ‘Cause Tori is a MILX. Don’t you forget.

As a Metafilter commenter noted, if she’s gonna change it, shouldn’t she say MYLF (‘Mother YOU’d like to fuck’)? Good point, but Tori’s weird. Maybe one of her personalities thinks she IS a mother I’d like to xylophone.

You know, if Tori hadn’t have overloaded me with those reminders that this is, indeed, the return of the MILF, I might’ve believed her when she tells me not to forget.

    But at this point, I’ve been innundated with M… I… L… F…

And, in Tori’s case, it’s lost its novelty appeal.

can we give a shoutout to the bassist playing lap steel in the second verse?? i mean come on – that’s impressive. only the best for the cornflakes

  3. Nice shout-out to Peoria, IL, Tori. Us midwestern hicks haven’t heard of those fancy words you’re using.

Taylor, you slack-jawed yokel, it is one of the anonymous TV executives to whom EW spoke who is quoted above.

Is that supposed to be Tori Amos or Tori performing as one of her characters?

  7. Red or Blue?  |   Posted on May 7th, 2007

Thank goodness this series of tubes keeps Peoria, Illinois natives like myself hip to 1999 teenage movie slang terms.

Stick to reporting about McDreamy, EW.

Et tu, Red or Blue? It’s not as if EW put the word Peoria in that exec’s mouth.

if that last line is a nod to Zach Galifianakis’s “I sure xylophone, do I xylophone” joke, well done. if not, uh… nothin’ to see here.

  10. Nice “Y Kant Tori Read” reference in the title.

Tori’s music often leaves me cold, but I really enjoyed this performance the other night. It’s pretty catchy but also has that Tori weirdness. I also liked the band arrangement.

  11. I find it more annoying that she ripped off the melody from that Aerosmith song called “Hangmans Jury” for the hookline to “Big Wheel”.

Don’t pretend you’re too cool to notice plagiarism, Toriphiles.

  12. a Toriphile  |   Posted on May 8th, 2007

No, it’s that were too sophisticated to listen to Aerosmith.

  13. Ooooh, guess you showed me.

It isn’t plagiarism if *you* don’t notice it, then?

Er, yeah, I’m sure Aerosmith totally came up with that melody, too, unless they stole it from Led Zeppelin. The guy who really originated it probably worked on a plantation and had a really lousy boss, you know.
