Coloradans thinking of heading to Austin City Limits this fall are encouraged to stay home and roll out the guest bed. Reader Ricardo writes that, the same weekend as ACL (September 14th and 15th), a bevy of indie rockers descend upon the picturesque Red Rocks ampitheater for an event designed to save Mountain Westerners the inter-regional trip in pursuit of festival fun. From the creators of the South Park Music Festival and the Midweset Music Summit comes the inaugural Monolith Festival, offering “50+ bands” over two nights and four (or five) stages. The Denver Post offers a first glimpse at the partial lineup:

hmmm. pretty cool. there are still more bands at ACL that i want to see though. although i am a huge fan of the lips, and if i wasn’t seeing them in july here in oklahoma, i might be pretty tempted by this.

Weird that DeVotchka is not on this bill. Obvs they can’t be at both ACL and Monolith. Still, it’s too bad that they can’t be in their home state to get some love at a big ol’ festival, especially since there aren’t too many successful creative entities coming out of Colorado that appeal to this indie crowd. Then again, they’re playing Red Rocks in August with Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams and some other great acts, which sort of makes up for it.

Yeah, DeVotchKa is playing the Starbucks-sponsored rock fest with Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Old 97s, Jesse Sykes and — I’m not kidding — a band made up of Starbucks employees.
And re: the snow, yeah, it could definitely snow that weekend. It’d be a little early, but not out of the realm of possibility.

How are bands like the The Decemberists and CYHSY going to be playing Monolith and ACL. It’s the same weekend.
Most bands manage to play show in different cities on consecutive nights. No big challenge there.
yeah cat-a-tac and hot IQs! some good denver bands around these days, and it’s cool that they get a big festival like this to be a part of and play alongside some pretty huge acts.
So I’m guessing Wayne Coyne will get to throw snowballs at the crowd because, you know, it snows ALL year round in that mystical mountain state.
broken social scene played the bleeding kansas festival on saturday and lollapalooza on sunday. its more than doable to play two festivals in one weekend.
Earl Greyhound. very excited they are getting to the point where they can play festivals like this. they are sooooo effin good! anyone in nyc who hasnt seen them yet should check them out at Bowery next month. they are really the best new band out there now. its only a matter of time until everyone turns on them
This festival looks like it’s going to be awesome for the national acts as well as the lesser known.. Everyone wins.. jyeah!
