Wainrofolo’s five-night residency at the Gramercy in NYC this week is the first of his show stints in the city that we’ve missed in years — probably a mix of seeing him do too many covers at Carnegie recently (Judy Garland one night, Xmas carols another) and not falling in love with the new record the way we’d hoped. But, this recent performance of the new album’s title track on The Henry Rollins Show has us in the midst of canceling plans this weekend to catch him. Watch it here, and click here to hear Rufus talk about how he went to Germany to have his “Bowie moment” and instead was foiled by the city’s Romantic culture, finding himself “eating sausages” and “listening to Wagner” and having that inform the record. Ziemlich ausgezeichnet.

Hey, isn’t that the studio where Blue Oyster Cult did some recording with Bruce Dickinson?
i’ve got a fever…
His dad’s way cooler.
rufus was his best when he was a drug addict/alcoholic. too bad more of his concerts from the poses era (2001-2002) werent filmed because he was so good back then. all drunk and shit during the show.
Yes, Rufus’ Dad is way cool. Cooler? How about as cool.
Also, I also had kind of a “I like it but was sorta disapointed reaction to the new disc. But…he did a version of the title track on Letterman that was equally great. So yeah…go see him if you can. Going to Town is the other great song on the album.
living in romania sucks. is there another place the video can be viewed cause they’re discriminating against romania.
thx
living in canada also sucks. dammit.
Rufus is so OVER ! It’s painful to watch him slowly going down as a male Celine Dion
I love Rufus and I love The Henry Rollins Show. What a perfromance. I can’t wait to see his other song tonight on the show on IFC.
look, his voice is great…so song every song isnt perfect…who gives a shit. so pitchfork says his best work is in front of him…who gives a shit. the dude is passionate and his Leonard Cohen covers are the shiznit. what!
Ugh.
Why is it not good enough that he is more talented, educated, and sexy than every other “musician” covered on this blog?
Not every song is perfect, but at least he can read fucking music.
I say Sir Stripeypants should get thee back behind the piano. Rufus looks a little awkward standing and singing.

Greetings from Old Europe
none of you tired, bitter, failed musician fucks know what you are talking about. Rufus Wainwright is a fucking genious, he composed all of the arrangements on this album and has done so in the past. you all obviously would rather hear some tired old rock band with shitty guitar playing skills who never read a note of music in their lives and have no appreciation for classical music, etc. some tired coked out hipster fuckers. this is why stupid shit is popular, people like you who are too fucking lame and bitter to know what is real talent.
and fuck you to whoever said he was better when he was having drug problems. you’re an asshole. yeah. its so cool to be drunk! you’re a fucking loser go pay too much for your shithole apartment in williamsburg.
fuck all of you!
ummm you aren’t so smart mr. smart you can’t even spell GENIUS correctly. ps. look up the credits, he didnt’ do all of his arrangements at all. I know that for a fact
I love Rufus. I attended one of his recent London gigs and it was the best thing I’ve seen for years and got me more into the new album, which i really wasn’t feeling before.
But I really couldn’t give a toss if he can read music or not. Anyone who bags out bands on the basis that they can’t read music is an elitist fuck-stain.
He did all the arrangements minus the horn arrangement on the title-track,read better.
Why all the Rufus haters? He is a fucking genius, hands down. The concert at Gramercy was unbeatable, he sounded better than I’ve ever heard him sound before. He was in top form. Maybe he’s off the drugs, maybe he’s in love, maybe he’s just fucking amazing. Um, yeah.
