Ryan continues to be a role model and influence for greater internet utilization. If you missed the Hiro set, check this vid from Letterman last night; the Cards are set up just like they were on Tuesday (no Ray Bans for Ry, alas), and when offered up live, this track has more character (i.e. sounds less like “Harder Not That It’s Over 2.0″ and more like just plain ol’ “Two”). More impressively, though, at the top of the show Letterman mentioned that the Cardinals would do a second tune after the telecast, available for live streaming on CBS.com. We didn’t watch ’til 3AM so we have no idea what they played (anyone?), but it’s the first time we noticed Dave get into the sphere of prominent web bonus stuff. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was ryan hyphen adams dot com’s idea.

UPDATE: It was “I Taught Myself How To Grow Old,” which you can watch at CBS. (Thx, Rob)

  2. Dave’s actually done this before (most recently with Michael Martin Murphy as well as an entire hour with Elvis Costello and The Imposters). For a complete list of Late Show performances (and to watch Ryan’s web only song), go here:

Strangely enough, the Foo Fighters did a post-show webcast-only performance for Letterman back in November of 1999. They played “Learn to Fly” during the show and “Breakout” for the webcast.

Pearl Jam played a ten-song webcast-only performance after their Letterman appearance last year: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12647861/

I don’t think it’s something that happens often, though. Perhaps just with performers that Letterman really likes.

When he played “Come Pick Me Up” on the Late Show awhile back Dave seemed to really like it and said something like “That song sums up my life.”

  6. Ryan’s cleaned himself up a little. He looks human.

At least that Ass-Hat Paul Schaffer doesn’t appear to be playing along as well…why does he feel the need to play with every band on that stage!?

“Come Pick Me Up” on Letterman has to be Ryan Adams best television performance. It sounds tons better than the recorded version.

  10. Funny how he’s sounding more like his Whiskeytown days as time goes by…

Ryan has become a Coke sign to me, I can’t escape it these days…give me some room to breath websites and magazines and maybe i’d care about listening to this album. jees.

  13. Great song. I’m going to have to pick up the new CD now. I love the pedal steel playing on this song.

great song, best album of the year for me.

but does anything else think he’s getting scarily like Tom Delonge these days? What with the hair and what have ya? Press mute and you could just as easily be watching another Blink-182 side-project.

    Stephen, no.

I’m not crazy about the new album, but his label needs to release something like a two-disc best-of collection. I don’t think people realize what an insanely amazing songwriter Ryan Adams is since he craps out so many songs. He could very well be the best songwriter of this decade if you make a case for it.
