The weekend of insanely good and FREE live music got off to a smooth-grooved start at the weekly Seaport show, this installment bringing UK trio Fujiya & Miyagi, just one of a ton of must-hit shows the South Street Seaport Music Festival folks put together this summer (Animal Collective/Danielson a few weeks back, Menomena, Deerhunter, Battles SUICIDE, the National/the Forms all on the horizon). Can’t expect F&M to draw like Animal Collective (they didn’t), but a good number of Transparent Things fans caught the hushed, Krautrocking cool of “Ankle Injuries,” trickling funk of “Collarbone,” and stutter-stepped backbeats of “Photocopier” and “Sucker Punch” as the sun set by the Seaport. David Best brought each whispery, syncopated syllable with mild-mannered voguing/karate chops, while the rest of the Brighton boys generated feel-good infectiousness all while rolling through “R-r-reeboks In Heaven” and just pretending to be Japanese.

Few more pics after the jump.

  1. No jackets?

  2. It was too hot for tracksuits. Good show. They still need a drummer.

  3. a few more pics over at Fresh Bread. the show was good. the crowd was sucky and talkative.

This show was such a waste of time. These free shows do not have enough amplifier power to rub two sticks together and keep the crowd interested. Easily one of the worst shows I’ve ever been to. The opening band (Black Moth SuperRainbow?) even managed to forget their drummer. Good calls, all around.

  5. Yeah, I was blown away by how not good Black Moth Super Rainbow were.
