Deerhunter have been pushing boundaries from the get-go, calling their debut album Turn It Up Faggot, messing around with gender roles and fake blood, and most shockingly, working at American Apparel. But the Atlanta psych-rockers had really taken their art to a shitty, gay new level this week on deerhuntertheband.blogspot.com. First was the Poop Journal. TMI, yes, but harmless. Yesterday, however, the band shit out the lurid post Five Imaginary Boyfriends…, which outlined five homoerotic fantasties, illustrated by pictures of very young-looking naked boys.
We were wondering how we could link to it, since most of you would find it NSFH. Turns out, it didn’t go over so well and the post was removed overnight. In its place you can read their explanation…

A response to the last posts comments sectionFirst of all, if you do not like what i’m about don’t read this blog or buy our records or come see us play. If you think we are overhyped and shitty then find another band that strikes your fancy and go hang around their blog. I am not trying to shock anyone. To those who recognized it, yeah, Dennis Cooper is a huge influence on me since I was about 15. I highly recommend his blog (denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com). No onto something more serious… Don’t even think about pulling this child pornography shit with me. I have not used a single image that did not come from a legitimate site that keeps age records. Child Pornography is fucked up, and as someone who was sexually abused since I was seven, I take it pretty seriously. I don’t need thought police on here. You can eat the shit you’ll be seeing photos and journal entries about in the next day. I can’t help it that some of you think I am sick or fucked up or twisted. My job is to express myself how I best know how. Usually a mixture of sadness and humor. I was really writing about lonliness. I don’t feel like I need to defend the fact that I am fucked up because I was fucked with and sexually abused at a VERY young age. At this point in my life I am a 25 year old virgin with a body image that decreases exponentially everytime some dipshit with a blog takes a jab at how ugly I look. I don’t blame myself for my adolescent fantasies because I am still an adolescent, looking for someone to connect to, I guess. Sorry to get all serious but I don’t need this shit from cunts that come here expecting “Shock and Awe”. That’s not what we are about. We are about honesty. Everyone shits. Honestly. And everyone has fucked up things they hide. I show mine with a sense of humor.
Make it of what you will, but one thing’s for certain: we’ll have to be checking Deerhunter’s blog every day now, won’t we.

Any excuse to post that photo, take it.
i guess if he was sexually abused as a kid that explains why he likes so much fucked up shit, wears dresses, likes little boys, and enjoys talking about poop. i wonder what’s next.
I saw that blog entry, and to be honest while I could have done without the photos of naked guys (and the accompanying lurid writeups), I don’t think there’s any “child pornography” angle to this.. They were youngish, but not *that* young and I’m inclined to think that if he was writing about girls rather than guys he would have gotten away with it pretty much.. I do fear for the guy though – there must be a danger of him turning his band into some kind of emotional pornography freakshow event if he continues the way he’s going.. there’s a reason why most performers hold something back.
I’ve known that kid since 8th grade or so…he’s just fucking with all of you.
TTU, I believe that Rockbitch has cornered the current pornographic freakshow angle, so Deerhunter would just be treading on previously defiled ground. Maybe they can start throwing poop at the audience to make things more interesting.
If he truly is “fucking wih all of us”, then that’s pretty sick because lying about being abused…that’s just low.
everything about this band sucks.
i really want to see the original post, anyone have a cache?
Don’t any of you ever read Dennis Cooper’s blog? You’re homophobic, anti-porn CREEEEEEEPS. Maybe you should stick to more artless music groups if it’s too much for you. You know, like Interpol or Lily Allen. There’s music out there for narrow-minded self-entitled bloggers as well as gays, you just need to know where to find it! Like at a gas station.
the haters among you are so fucked if you can no longer discern sincerity.
Deerhunter put on an amazing show at Bowery last night, both musically and emotionally, with Bradford even just talking to the audience for like a half-hour after the band left the stage cuz they didn’t have any more songs. he sang along to his iPod thru the soundsystem to the B52s. it was great, and i don’t doubt the guy’s honesty at all.
seriously, those of you who waste your brain cells pondering whether someone you’ve never meant is ironic or sincere, just fuck off and find the next fad band to blog about.
That post has since been removed as well, but you should read the review of their show last night over on the Village Voice blog. Apparently after the band finished playing, Bradford sat down to chat with the audience about these blog posts, his past, and karaoke to the B-52′s. At this point I think the music blogs should try and leave his personal life alone as he obviously has some deep seeded problems in his life that hopefully he’ll be able to sort out. Its one thing for him to be posting these feelings on his blog, its another for it to be broadcast on Stereogum and Pitchfork everyday.
i heard that bradford’s bowery ballroom post show ramblings last night only held people’s attention because he was acting so totally odd. what about him singing along to the B52s is so great?
Actually, if this gets Pitchfork to stop obsessively covering every little piece of non-news about them, it might be a positive thing.. Pity if it’s distracting from the music, because they’re making some extremely good stuff – check out ‘River Card’ on Bradford Cox’s Atlas Sound myspace page, and that new ‘After Class’ track they did for the Rare Book Records compilation.
If he posts this shit on his blog, he’s putting it out there for all the world to see, read, and yes, criticize. So knock off the whole, “Why doesn’t everyone just leave him alone?” bullshit.
“i guess if he was sexually abused as a kid that explains why he likes so much fucked up shit, wears dresses, likes little boys, and enjoys talking about poop. i wonder what’s next.”
guitarhero, you fucking douchebag
“Leave his personal life alone”? Are you fucking serious? That’s why he’s in a band that suddenly blowing up all over the place, and that’s why I now see the rather infamous photo (up there) all over the internet, because he wants his personal life to be left alone? Hmmm, right.
Are you still a virgin if you get blown by a guy underneath a dress?

Never doubt the words of the Oxford Dictionary.
Brendan, I went to that Bowery show.
That bit. I was completely disappointed. Ex-models stole that show like they do every time they open for anyone. Seriously, Deerhunter reminded me of my band Freshman year of college, every song a bunch of two-note melodies that get louder and louder while the drummer plays as if no one else is in the room, missing the snare and whacking a crash over and over to make up for a lack of real intensity.
They’re kids.
i wonder if this pisses off anyone in the band?
For anyone to excuse spreading this warped of view of human sexuality by saying “it’s my art, and it helps me deal with my past” is way too exclusively selfish a view of art to keep me interested. For every bit of me that feels for the man, there’s a part of me that recognizes he’s an adult and fully capable of making his choosing a more intelligent and righteous avenue for these sort of thoughts than music.
There is absolutely no submission to the absolute– no appeal to anything greater than his own sad experience. This a personal matter that belongs in therapy or court or prayer, not on the stage or the gallery, or the music blog for that matter. He can call it “thought police” he can call it “self-image” , he can really call it whatever he likes ,but the fact is it’s his own conscience he’s squaring off with.
There’s more eloquent ways of exploring sexuality through art.
is the lead singer of deerhunter gay?
if you’re going to post controversial things on your blog (and he KNEW it would be controversial), it’s your responsibility to be strong enough to take the inevitable criticism.
Deerhunter has some great recorded songs, but what I remember from their show in Providence was an emotional meltdown using a delay pedal, punctuated by very brief snippets of very good grooves.
holy shhhhh*t!
this guy is awful
