The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art commissioned Spectratone International, a.k.a. Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson, along with one of our favorite Microphones, Mirah, to write Share This Place, a song cycle about insects. The resulting dozen bugged-out tunes, which premiered alongside Britta Johnson’s zany stop-motion shorts at the Seattle International Children’s festival this past May, will be available shortly on enhanced CD. On the tracks we’ve sampled, cello, accordion, shakers, and perkily varied percussion serve as a playful backdrop to Mirah’s chirpy, kid friendly intonations: “Community”‘s mellow admittance that “we take advantage of our pheromones” is okay, but we’re fondest of “Credo Cigali,” a proboscis-lunging strutter.
