Foo Fighters are back with an “ass-slaming” rocker built for Guitar Hero (and if we’re lucky, Prince). “The Pretender,” the first single from the Foos’ forthcoming sixth LP Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace (wow, just what we like in a mate!), had its world premiere on KROQ a couple days ago, and has been tearing up YouTube in the form of publicity photo collages. Find the MP3 at HypeM or Pretty Much Amazing. The intro’s sorta “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and the drummers out there will dig Taylor’s big hit on beat 4 of the 4th bar in the 4 bar hook — the illusion of a new downbeat, friends. Count it out.

As might be expected from a Foo single, “The Pretender” is coiled with Grohl’s patented dynamic shifts (soft, loud, soft, loud, lift-off) and adrenaline-upping. There’s so much youthful urgency, it’s difficult to believe RCA/Legacy recently issued a 10th Anniversary edition of Colour & Shape, which received a fair review at P4K, though the number grade didn’t seem to match the sentiments. Deducted points for the nonsense of a 10th Anniversary Edition presumably. Well, we still think the original record’s pretty solid, as is “The Pretender” and, come to think of it, this “Foo A To Z” goodie list organized by Berkeley Place. (Maybe they cheated slightly on “X,” but extra points for “Z.”)

Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace is out 9/25 on Roswell/RCA.

Still anxiously awaiting “Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running).”

This is MUCH better than their last, very lack-luster record.

  2. We all have it Dave, no need to spam us :<

Agreed, this song alones shits all over In Your Honor. I’m glad Dave knows how to write rock songs again.

  5. Yep, Z on the Berkeley thing was pretty great. I’d have never downloaded all of that without it.

  6. I thought that sucked pretty hard. Well…perhaps sucked is the wrong way to put it.
But it was completely boring and mediocre.
It’ll do well on rock radio!

Dane, have you heard In Your Honour? This is far better.

sorry to break the sad news. but “cheer up boys…” is not going against emo bands.

it would be funny, but lame in an “eminem-fuck-boybands” style (aka, need for media attention)

    i love the pretender.

WTF? How did there last album suck? Pretender is awesome, I love it. But how the fuck did in your honor suck? It didn’t. Owned.

Pretty good for the single. Foo releases don’t tend to be the best songs on the albums, and since this song is a harder and more honest sounding song than any song on the rock track of IYO (aside from the cool verses in DOA, pretty lackluster album, no doubt) I think we’re in for a treat.

As for the song, aside from the arrangement, which feels a little contrived… or perhaps even wreckless in places, I didn’t have many issues with it. Besides, the song’s got an enjoyable enough pay period, perhaps that’s just why they make it harder to get there.

Sucked? and well, yes, in your honor only had what..the first cd that was good? but you say pretender sucked? Sounds like you should be a fall out boy fan…

I’m not sure about it :s

The melodic and the heavy bits were good, but they dont seem to go together to well. I think it needed a bit more rehearsing tbh, video was a bit boring as well although all music videos are pretty crap these days :(
