The political folk-punk turned quasi-political mainstream pop-punkers have been getting shit from diehards for singing to a major label, but it’s 2007, kids, and we see no reason to stop listening to New Wave in all its silly, catchy glory. They may not change the world (“White People For Peace” was a fun enough way to try), but they will play great shows and write hooks that lodge themselves in our heads awhile. Case in point, “Thrash Unreal”‘s trite storyline made us think of Poison’s “Mamma’s Fallen Angel” for the first time in years, but how can you deny the chorus or this, uhhh, ridiculous wine-soaked video?

Love the drummer’s nonstop smiles and the general band interaction … but who’s responsible for casting that girl as the “tortured outsider”?

    This is absolute dog shit.

As the Eternal Cowby and Reinventing Axl Rose far outshine this album. However, this album is a vast improvement on that turd of a record, “Searching for a Former Clarity.”

If you ever saw this band live after Reinventing Axl Rose or As The Eternal Cowboy, you would understand why old Against Me! fans find this new shit to be about on par with fall out boy.

No way that Stereogum posted this in earnest. Terrible, terrible music.

Fuck that…this song rips and this band is as awesome as ever. Can we let bands evolve folks?

I don’t get how people get so ardent and true-blue about these pop-punk bands when it’s just a rehash of anything from 70s arena rock to whatever the hell some other band played yesterday.

  7. I posted about this video last week:
    http://wavedrumor.blogspot.com/2007/08/new-against-me-video.html

The song’s cool, ain’t too certain about the video, but I like the stark closeups.

  8. Stereogum readers get all confused when there are posts about bands that wouldn’t fit on the Garden State soundtrack. Way to diversify!

“but who’s responsible for casting that girl as the ‘tortured outsider’?”

The one who knows what it’s like to have a head which is disproportionately small.

This would’ve been a better Buckcherry song.

  11. I love this band, and this record. But the two videos from this record have been DUDS. I think more bands need to go the “video contest” route that Modest Mouse took. This is a perfect example of OK concept, boring execution, and weak editing.

  12. Reminds me of all those New Brunswick basement shows I went to way back when…. Really, that whole scene. So maybe it’s partially nostalgia? More likely: the stuff’s fun and its catchy, post-Bad Religion pop. Plus, seriously, look at how much fun the drummer’s having. Watching him rock out’s worth the clumsy editing/concept.

the video sucks, but this song is really catchy.

Too bad red wine stains so horribly, now all their clothes are ruined. Shoulda used white wine.

Song’s pretty damn catchy though. I’ll be humming that one for a while.

  15. @michelle – You are so right. It must be genetic, she doesn’t look like it was the result of her day job as an intrepid anthropologist or jungle missionary.

This one leaves me a little cold, but I’m still listening and laughing to “White People for Peace.”

  16. nice song, stupid video – but aren’t most videos stupid?

  17. Yeah, sorry. I think the song is pretty good. Maybe it’s just because I’m in my 30′s, and maybe it’s just because I think that most music past 1995 is rancid, but I’d listen to this song before I would listen to any of their previous work. Bag on groups like Poison all you want, but most of these kids today cannot play half as well as those “hair band” musicians. And why did we give up decent harmonies for growling, rapping, and screaming? As much as I hated the Aquanet, it was a small price to pay for the musicianship. Peace!
