We’ve always had trouble sleeping in haunted houses, but seems like it’s no big thang for Mr. Ben Bridwell. Unsurprisingly, the first single from our favorite digicam-dissing, art-auctioning reverb-rockers’ Cease To Begin is a dynamically rich, melancholically sound anthem with a riff-tastic guitar exeunt. Very pretty, florid stuff. (If ya didn’t hear yet, grab a free MP3 at BOH’s MySpace.) Just one complaint: Is it only us or could you imagine this thing building for another minute or so? Cuts out right before it heads skyward … Then again, maybe dude is scared of haunted houses, plus all their well-worn metaphorical associations, and wanted to slip out ASAP. Regardless, we’re already singing along by heart (emphasis, of course, on heart).

Also, hey, dig the lack of a question mark in the song title! So affirmative, Ben. And, by the by, also dig that spiraling chest flora…

Cease To Begin is out 10/9 on Sub Pop.

  1. Great new song, simple, yet a big sound. :) From some songs I have heard, this is going to be one of the best of ’07.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the guitar tuning doesn’t quite match up with this song, or is just merely odd?

Either way, heard this for the first time yesterday, and I think it’s great.

I like the song, but I wouldn’t mind if it had a bit more to it. It’s a great melody, and I love Bridwell’s voice on it. Just sweet sweet stuff. That being said, it’s the same melody the entire song, just with added guitar gain. A real chorus or bridge might not hurt. That said, can’t wait for the album. Super excited.

BoH may finally break out of the looming shadow cast by Night Ranger with the soulful Cease to Begin. This song was destined for any alternative rocker with a Blaupunkt equipped convertible. That would be me! LOL ;)

  8. Good song for the album opener. Sounds like it’s more of an intro and will probably flow well into song #2. Can’t wait for this thing to come out!

Am I the only one slightly disappointed? Doesn’t this sound like Blink 182?

I am so excited for this release.

It seems like all my favourite bands are releasing stuff this summer/fall. Kind of nice.

  13. innercityblues has it dead-on… this song sounds like blink 182.

Do people really like this? His voice sounds incredibly annoying and the song isn’t rocking in the least, and I loved Everything All the Time, so you can’t accuse me of being a hater.

That is an insanely fantastic beard (be it real or fake).

Everyone’s talking about the beard. What about the Christmas tree of chest hair??

  16. HAHA I didn’t even notice the tree !

    Love the band.
    Love the song.
