Amy’s drugged up campaign to ensure the Mercury Prize went to, well, a band that first made its name for saying things like “MDMAzing!” was a total success; she lost, Klaxons won. However those cuts and bruises from her wild night out with Blake did heal up nicely and in time for the mini soulstress to perform Back To Black acoustic jazzy jam “Love Is A Losing Game” in the for the Merc Prize ceremony. The attendees love it, and Jools practically orgasms onstage (“one of the most amazing voices … she has one of the best voices of all time”), but at this point, all of Amy’s coy and demure stage posturing is disturbing, and sad. Looks perfectly together and sounds great in one second, and then her Doherty double hubby comes and whisks her away, likely to the cracked out afterparty. Awesome. And, cringe. (Thanks, Teco Apple)

i don’t know. she seems like just another example of an artist who is simply given extra credit for being a “genius” and “the best voice ever” and whatever other silly hyperbole, just because she uses junk. why does that fact that you do heroin make people think you’re a genius? keeps happening. ugh, guess i’m annoyed cause i just saw ‘dig’ last night. junkies and people with junkie worshiping complexes are ruining music just as much as huge stupid corporations are.
Benj, junk and the like isn’t “ruining music”, it’s keeping it alive.
Some of the junkie geniuses are highly talented people in the first place. Some of them tend to suffer from mental illness so what do they do? They self medicate. I guess it’s easier to get drunk and high then to get therapy and be on meds. Some feel that it takes away from their creativity because they don’t get the highs and lows. Anyway, it’s just my thought.
My husband commented that this performance had a very “Man Who Sold The World” vibe to it, if you get my drift. I hope she pulls it together, though.
I’ve always countered the argument that the drugs made artists go out farther and, therefore, caused them to make greater art.
I still can’t help but wonder: if the talent was always there inside them, and it was just a matter of time before it was expressed with or without chemical stimulus, how much greatness has the world been robbed of because the drugs actually hindered, not heightened, the artistic statement?

I’m just happy to see no one is trashing her because of any events going on in her personal life. Really, who cares?! Obviously, I wish her the best, and that she get clean and sober. But when you hit ‘Play’, does it move you? That’s what I’m thinking about. Everything else is of little concern to me. Thanks again, everyone, for focusing on the music (except for benj).

@libertee: I’m a huuuuuge fan of Amy, and I think Back To Black is the best album of the year in any genre.
I’ve noticed that comments about Amy on music sites tend to read more like yours, statements about how outsized her talent is, along with an expression of hope that she can get her demons under control. But head on over to the “gossip” sites, and the tone completely changes. Most comments are along the line of “she’s gross”, “has she cleaned up her bloody feet yet?”, and “she’ll probably be dead by the end of the year” and so on.
The music fans see a hard-partying rock star [Amy as Janis Joplin], while the celebrigossip fans see a trainwreck [Amy as Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan]. I suspect there is also a lot of sexism and double-standardism at play WRT to people’s opinions about Amy.
All I see is potential that, if she doesn’t get control, will be lost if not to death, then to detrimental effects of the lifestyle.

Great album. She’s a trainwreck, and it becomes hard to separate my love of the album from the tabloid stories, but damn, I loved this album back in January, and I still love it now.
that performance was unbelievable. she looks a little bit healthier — i really, really hope she turns it around because a waste of this talent would be such a huge shame. i don’t think people think she’s more talented because she does drugs, or at least i hope not. getting chills from performances like that have nothing to do with gossip columns.
Did you know that she has one of the best voices? Really, she has one of the BEST voices. Maybe THE best voice.
I haven’t really listened to her beyond the few songs I’ve heard here and there. Songs are good, but I’ve grown weary of the drugged out rock star thing and really have no desire to monetarily or otherwise support people who are hellbent on killing themselves.
But she does have the best voice, really, she does.
I never really paid attention to her until all the tragic gossip lately. That’s probably the first time I’ve heard her sing. A little surreal – she almost sounds like Ella Fitzgerald or something. Not too bad.
But she looks ULTRA trashy. Ugh. And whoever said ‘Janice’ from Friends – that’s pretty funny. I see that.
And the whole drugged-out rock star thing? It’s entertaining. Tragic, maybe, but she did it to herself. I have no real sympathy for young multi-millionaires who act like life is so tough, and don’t know what to do with their money except spend it on crack and whores. Party till you die, for all I care. Whatever. Babyshambles?? Has anyone actually heard their music? I haven’t. But that Doherty trainwreck is sure fun to point and laugh at.
If that performance didn’t leave you saying… “WOW”, maybe it left your jaw hanging open like mine! Spectacular!
i really don’t care what happens in her private life because every time i see her perform live everything else seems to melt away.
I just think she has a lot more potential than she shows, i hope this isn’t her peak.
