Rangy singer-songwriter Cass McCombs turns the big 3-0 this year, so it’s no surprise the first single from his new album engages in a little nostalgic storytelling. “That’s That” is a triplet shufflin’ gem, seeing Cass croon whimsically of a southern-bound roadtrip with an older companion, making a romantic, new life — cleaning toilets in Baltimore. The track’s steady chug meets harmonized feel-good “ooh”s and throwback “doo-wah”s, giving you the sense Mr. McCombs sees life in color-faded photos, with crinkled corners and pleasant faces. It’s a top-rolled down tune, and it makes ya want the whole scrap-book. Only a few weeks more to wait.

Dropping The Writ is out 10/9 on Domino.
