Just about making our Halloween complete — missed Danzig over the weekend! — Robert Smith and the boys played a couple new tunes a week ago in Mexico City. They’re ostensibly from the much-delayed new album, which is now due out in … May? We’re not sure of the lyrics, but “A Boy I Never Knew” features a mic-crushing bass (played by an excellently over-excited bassist), rendering the tune pretty unlistenable as currently archived via cheap video. Still, you get the idea — pretty, dreamy, yowl-y — and it makes you realize how many of the Cure’s tunes rely on that low-end groove.
The recording for “Don’t Say Anything”‘s better, but the song seems less promising. Check it…
From a different angle…
Still kinda boring, despite the guitar shred. Maybe you had to be there, but think this guitar lick was better. As an aside, how old were you when Smith first said the Cure were going to retire?

The Boy I never knew is a b side off the last record not a new one. Amazing song.
All great songs.
hey Jesse — as far as we know, “a boy i never knew” was recorded during the sessions for the last album, but hasn’t been given a proper release as of yet … it’s reportedly gonna be on the new one.
That’s Simon Gallup on the bass…ahem!
@JLoco
He’s aged really well!
If you’re going to write about a band like The Cure, shouldn’t you have some clue what you’re talking about? Just sayin’.
Simon Gallup – RESPECT!
i vote that the douchey phrase “just sayin’” should be banned from music dork vocabularies. just sayin’…
I was at two of the three concerts played by The Cure in Mexico City last week and I’ve got to say they were phenomenal, beautiful, simply great!!! Yes, A Boy I Never Knew was one of the most precious jewels of the second night… What to say about the wonderful shine some songs now have with this new line-up, one of the best Cure’s I have heard in 16 years of running behind them each tour!
