Fun idea for a list, rattling off the most iconic axes of all time. Synergistic timing, too, since today we’re giving away a purty Les Paul Studio. At only 28 deep, chances are Blender‘s list missed your favorite guitarist’s piece, but don’t worry it’s not like the National are at #1 or anything.

28 Buck Owens – Red, White, and Blue acoustic
27 Les Claypool (Primus) – The Rainbow Bass
26 Michael Angelo Batio – The Reverse Double Neck
25 Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) – Dan Armstrong/Ampeg ARMG-2
24 Michael Anthony (Van Halen) – Jack Daniel’s Bass
23 Angus Young (AC/DC) – Gibson SG
22 Ace Frehley (KISS) – Laser Guitar
21 Albert King – Gibson Flying V
20 Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label Society) – The Grail
19 Jerry Only (The Misfits) – The Devastator
18 Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) – Blue
17 Bootsy Collins – Space Bass
16 “Dimebag” Darrell (Pantera) – The Dean From Hell
15 Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) – Hamer Five-Neck
14 Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) – Fender Mustang
13 ZZ Top – Dean Spinning Fur Guitar/Bass
12 Gene Simmons (KISS) – Axe Bass
11 Eric Clapton – Blackle

Top ten after you hammer-on that mouse key.

10 B.B. King – Lucille
09 Jack White – 1964 J.B. Hutto Montgomery Airline
08 Bo Diddley – The Big B
07 Willie Nelson – Trigger
06 Prince – Purple Glyph Symbol Guitar
05 Paul McCartney – Hofner Violin Bass
04 Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) – Gibson SG Double Neck
03 Elvis Presley – Martin D-28 Acoustic
02 Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) – Frankenstrat
01 Jimi Hendrix – Fender Stratocaster

Head to Blender.com for some guitar detail and YouTube of each axe in action. What are they missing? Well since you asked, we’re miffed there’s no Slash + Les Paul listing. We’d even settle for a Slash + Guitar Hero controller mention, really. Have they not seen this? Or this?

And we’re assuming they haven’t seen this creepfest.

  2. my opinion is important.  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    Stevie.
    Ray.
    Vaughan.
    This is an egregious oversight.

  3. Capt. Rock  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    09 Jack White – 1964 J.B. Hutto Montgomery Airline

Ol’Jack better thank Jack Yarber for purchasing that guitar for a mere $125 – while Jack W. was recording White Blood Cells in Memphis…

  4. peacedude  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    dude, what about jerry?

  5. Allah  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    The Jack Daniels bass…like really?

  6. b.LOUD  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

Yeah, forgetting the signature SRV ……. that’s cred lost.

  7. volume-addict  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

They also missed Michael Schenker’s black and white Dean Flying V, Paul Gilbert’s Ibanez with stick-on f-holes, and Steve Vai’s Ibanez 7-string Universe model. I may also add to that Chrissie Hynde and her various Fender Telecasters as well as other prominent Teles like Andy Summers’ and Joe Strummer’s (which just also recently got the Fender Custom Shop treatment available to anyone with about $1,400 to spare).

  8. zomg  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

wow, quite possibly the dumbest list ever. can we get a top 20 completely irrelevant lists list?

  9. Robbie Robertson’s bronzed Tele from THE LAST WALTZ?

    Randy Rhoades’s polka-dotted Flying V?

James Burton’s pink paisley Telecaster, from the ’68 comeback special?

Steve Vai’s JEM 777, with the handle?

    Les Paul’s… well, Les Paul?

Brain May’s one-of-a-kind, handbuilt “Big Red,” for Chrsit’s sake?

    Seriously, fuck a Blender.

    A few omissions:
Michel Schenker – black and white Dean Flying V
Steve Vai – Ibanez Universe 7-string
Paul Gilbert – Ibanez PG with stick-on f-holes
    Chrissie Hynde – Fender Telecaster
    Andy Summers – Fender Telecaster
Joe Strummer – Fender Telecaster (recently got the Fender Custom Shop treatment–you too can have it for less than $1,400)

  11. Sarah  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

Prince should really be #1, especially after the Superbowl.

  12. The Spilken8r  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

The Strat as #1 is kind of a strange choice, methinks…

Not because Jimi didn’t rule it or anything, but it’s kind of common, even before him. If a Strat was going to be #1, it really should have been S.R.V.’s. At least that one was customized.

B.B.’s Lucille, Willie’s Trigger, Even John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino seem slightly more defining to me.

But I’m kind of glad that Noel Gallager’s Epi “Union Jack” wasn’t listed. That guy is a wanker for realz.

  13. Springsteen’s Telecaster (really an old Fender Esquire)?!?!?!

  14. Any list that doesn’t include Jaco’s “Bass of Doom” is not a list I want to read.

  15. this list is whack- Where is SRV??? How many people would really recognize Hendrix’s guitar with out a museum nameplate?

  16. chad  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

I’m thinking that 11 should be “Eric Clapton – Blackie” instead of “Blackle”

  17. snuh  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

woody guthrie’s machine that kills fascists?

  18. rerere  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    James f’n Jamerson’s Funk Machine P-Bass

    Jonny Greenwood’s Telecaster

  19. kingoffresno  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

this is like stumbling upon a three hour circle jerk at Guitar Center. Nice

  20. ibonek  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

Blender seems to be trying to top themselves
with a more annoying list each month.

How about Neil Young’s “Old Black”?

  21. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

LOL @ what kingoffresno said. I was thinking the same thing. The guy who put this list together probably looks a lot like Ben Stiller’s character in the Tenacious D movie.

  22. word snuh. all i could think about was guthrie

  23. wilceaux  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

Since no one has mentioned it, I’d like to add Trey’s Languedoc to the list.

  24. coffee  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    What about Peter Buck’s Rickenbacker?

  25. Jarrett  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

I’m so glad that there is an absolute wave of people before me thinking that it’s fucking retarded that SRV’s Strat isn’t on there. It’s certainly a hell of a lot more recognizable than most of those guitars up there. Not that it matters, because this is a stupid list anyway. Next up- lists of the best/worst lists!

  26. Alan Knut  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

    George Harrison’s 12 String Rickenbacker, George’s Rosewood Tele, George’s 6119 Gretsch…

    Lennon’s J160E

    Clapton’s Painted SG

Elvis is more famous with a D-18 as that is what he played in the early days.

I think McCartney’s Hofner should be number one. Nobody else plays those and if they do it is in direct homage.

The problem with this list is they imply the type of guitar in some cases. Hendrix never regularly played the same strat so it is pointless to identify him with a certain guitar.

Cobain is more known for the mosrite style guitar than the Mustang. Or even his signature Jagstang.

  27. krossfader  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

He’s a bit of a joke now, but Hetfield’s ESP Explorer from the 80′s is iconic…

  28. Sean  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

How can they pick a specific custom guitar for almost every guitarist and then just pick one of the (if not THE) most common guitar models ever. Why not the Monterrey Pop Strat or some custom Jimi guitar that is actually recognizable?

  29. Cammy  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

wow, quite possibly the dumbest list ever. can we get a top 20 completely irrelevant lists list?

Posted by: zomg at November 28, 2007 4:15 PM

AND THEN to continue this clusterfuck, can we have people commenting on what irrelevant list’s listing isn’t on said list?

Because you know, this would be a funny idea.

  30. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 28th, 2007

Totally off topic but click here if you want to laugh your ass off. Some fat fuck from Texas fired off an angry missile to Jimmy Dean Sausage’s customer complaint department and somebody put it on youtube. It’s fucking hilarious…

i’m a fan of tom morello’s (strat? or ibanez?) that says “arm the homeless”

  32. bret  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

    Blackie Lawless – B. C. Rich Warlock.
    ’nuff said

  33. drobert  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

After all this – and not one person mentioned Waylon Jennings’ guitar?!?!?! One of THE most recognizable guitars EVER. C’MONNNNNN!

  34. Neilo  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Ermmmmm, I know I’ll probably get a few confused looks, but Rory Gallagher was an infinitely better guitar player than Clapton and SRV (sorry, you’re going to have to take my word on this – anyone who doesn’t believe me will have to find out for themselves) and his guitar isn’t on the list. For shame. His ’61 Strat is one of the centrepieces of a touring guitar exhibition for crying out loud.
I’d also agree with Peter Buck’s custom Rickenbacker with the holograms of the ladies on it. I’ve eaten meals (in an eatery called Captain America’s) under a signed one of his Rickenbackers on numerous occasions. AND, as if that wasn’t enough, directly underneath THAT guitar is a signed Angus Young model SG. Slurrrrrrp.

  35. john  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

    I second Guthrie’s guitar.

  36. Sarah  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

RJD. That’s Ronnie James Dio for those of you not in the know.

  37. Steve  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

YGTBFKM. That’s You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me for those of you not in the know.

  38. rgr_moore  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

hah nice to see billie joe armstrong’s blue in there. i wanted one like that when i was a kid :)

  39. dsfvgdf  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

It’s isn’t a list of who’s a better guitar player, it’s a list of most recognizable guitars. You could be the shittiest guitar player ever.

  40. Yeah, Neil Young’s old black definitely deserves inclusion…few guitarists are more influential than Neil Young, especially in the indie-rock scene.

  41. Tom Morello’s “Soul Power” and “Arm The Homeless”
Woody Guthrie’s “This Machine Kills Facsists”

  42. The Man  |   Posted on Dec 1st, 2007

It is an outrage that Noel Gallagher’s union jack supernova guitar isn’t listed? Who cares about Green Day. Fake punks.

  43. Angie  |   Posted on Dec 2nd, 2007

My question is, why did they limit themselves to 28? Could they pick a more random number?????? Take it up to 50 and include some more recognizable guitars!

  44. Barry  |   Posted on Jun 6th, 2008

    Clarence White’s / Marty Stuart’s Telecaster – the original B-Bender!

    Waylon’s leather-covered Telecaster

  45. How about John Lennon’s Casino? huh??

  46. STEVIE RAY VAUGHN CAN SUCK JESUS’S NUTS
