Gr?pthink has a list of favorite fictional musicians. (Thanks for the tip, Holotone.) There’s some pretty funny stuff on there like Milli Vanilli, Zack Attack!, and the BC-52s, but we’re not sure we can actually consider some of them fictional. Wonder what the definition is … like Gwar? The Monkees? Um, OOIOO? We appreciate the super obscure stuff like Adrian Leverkuhn of Thomas Mann’s novel Dr. Faustus. Of course, once you get past 40, most of ‘em only have a single vote and get pretty minor, but hey. Before we get started, we need to lobby for Dr. Teeth and Co., who are pinned at 18. Totally top 5 material.

Not to mention their death metal turn with Beaker on guest scowl. Anyhow, the list…

49 The Rock-afire Explosion

46 Sister & The Sisters (Sparkle)

Does the Heaven 17 count? Conundrum…

  17. Jeb Gavin  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Uh, just off the top of my head, The Ruttles perhaps? Seeing as they predate every group on the list with the possible exception of the BC-52s? OH, also, Wyckyd Sceptre was a million times the band 3 Times One Minus One is. Oh, and Cylon and Garfunkel from Futurama has to make the list, if for nothing else than Garfunkel’s refutation, “Over my dead career!” Oh, and of course the obvious Nirvana parody Nuns in a Blender from the Critic (noteworthy because somehow the producers felt lead singer Johnny Wrath, modeled after Cobain, would seem more at ease rolling around on a grassy hillside in lieu of heroin abuse.) And what’s the ruling on actual bands releasing music under fictional names fabricated for a particular album, like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, or Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, or Chris Gaines (not that Chris Gaines would normally be mentioned in the same breath as the first two, but the basic idea is the same.)

  18. sarah  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

    Where’s 2Gether?!

I’m really happy Du Jour made this list, though.

  19. Michael  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Would Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band qualify?

  20. safecracker  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Stillwater. Also The Mosquitos from Gilligan’s Island, featuring a positively svelte Mrs. Thurston Howell the 3rd. The Mosquitos? Is that right? I think that’s right.

  21. I ditto that – where the hell are the Rutles?

Wouldn’t mind seeing Crucial Taunt on there either.

  22. john  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

    Jet Screamer (Jetsons)
Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah (That Means Meet Me Tonight, or That Means I Love You)

  23. HatchetFace  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Hedwig and the Angry Inch mos def deserves a spot, near the top, even. I do appreciate the inclusion of Prozzak, though. So damn fly. Also, move up The Commitments about 10 places.

  24. Jeff  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

What?! No Rod Torfleson’s Armada featuring Herman Menderchuck? For shame.

  25. What about Big Fun, known for their hit “Teen Suicide (Don’t Do It)”?

  26. stef-k  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

First to come to mind was:

    Crucial Taunt from Waynes World!

  27. no love for Fur-Q?

  28. eric  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

some good ones, and since south park’s faith + 1 made it on there, what about “finger bang”? the fictional boy band.

oh, and is DVDA a fictional band? I don’t think they have an album, just random songs.

  29. Jeb Gavin  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Stillwater should definitely make the list. Also, I think Sgt. Pepper’s and Ziggy Stardust can’t be included, as they’re not necessarily fictional bands, but rather real bands that opted to assume an identity for artistic purposes. Even the Gorillaz is really just a side project for Damon Albarn and friends, the band was merely a construct through which they could make and release music. Similarly, I cannot see bands like the Commitments and the Monkeys making the list, simply because while they started out as fictional bands, they ended up as real bands, releasing albums, touring, etc.

  30. bluntacious  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

where are the wierd sisters? harry p represent.

  31. Jeb Gavin  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

    Monkees, not Monkeys, sorry.

  32. jdubs  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

fall out boy…oh wait, i just wish they were fictional.

  33. Christopher  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Not only is the Muppet Movie nostalgic gold, but Dr. Teeth & Electric Mayhen were funkier than most real bands can claim to be. I dare the Dap Kings to out-dap that shit.

  34. tomwaits  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

I’ll make my first my comment here, ever, for the titte brothers from ucb. and roy teppert or kandlecrush from tom goes…

  35. By Wonders do they mean Oneders? Also, where are The Way Outs…from way way out.

  36. what about CITIZEN DICK from Singles?

fronted by matt dillon with eddie vedder on drums.

    classic.

What about LIMOZEEN? Of homestarrunner fame.

  38. bogart  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

What about Love Burger from Can’t Hardly Wait? Though if I remember from the movie, they never even played a show before they broke up.

  39. karlhungus  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Sonic Death Monkey aka Kathleen Turner Overdrive aka Barry Jive & the Uptown 5!
how could they not make the list?????

  40. Jason  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

THE CARRIE NATIONS from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls!!!!!

  41. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Anybody here remember the punk rock episode of CHiPs? LOL. The band was called Pain and a young William Forsythe was the lead singer. So shitball….

    Pain by Pain

  42. cherry  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

the wonders from that thing you do! best fictional band evvvvah. of course crucial taunt also, they can really wail.

  43. davey  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

As usual, hip hop is always neglected on these lists…

NWH (Fear of a Black Hat)

  44. davey  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Scum of the Earth (from WKRP in Cincinnati)

  45. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

The Swanky Modes from Tapeheads. There was also some fictional Swedish band in that movie and Devo did the song for them. Baby Doll.

  46. @Jeff: Nice one.

  47. Jeb Gavin  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Swanky Modes: nice pull davey! And hip-hop isn’t neglected cherry, it’s just tougher to come up with decent examples of purely fictional hip-hop acts, unless of course you just want to randomly dig through early ’90s TV shows and track down one off references to MCs made by and for people who had no idea what hip-hop was. besides, CB4 is still up there. STRAIGHT OUTTA LOCASH. Though NWH is definitely a good one.

  48. SuperUnison  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Autobahn from Lebowski is way too high on that list.

Also, would Polaris from “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” count? They are way better than most of this list.

  49. ryan von karvola  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

what gives? No Hey, That’s my Bike, or Citizen Dick?

  50. jneslo  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

It’s nice to see Barry Jive & the Uptown 5 at number 30.
No Cap’n Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters? or the band from California Dreams?

  51. jesse and the rippers.

  52. J-ZY  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

so it’s not just a clever name.

  53. Clete  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

@ hi, I had to Google who the hell Jesse and the Rippers are. You’re a homo for knowing that.

PS – What was the name of Leather Tuscadero’s band on Happy Days?

  54. Erin  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

Frozen Embryos! Jared Leto’s fake band > Jared Leto’s for-real band.

  55. col es law  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

i found out the donnas existed thanks to their appearance as “the electrocutes” in a movie (can’t remember which). btw, the electrocutes were cooler.

  56. col es law  |   Posted on Nov 29th, 2007

i found out the donnas existed thanks to their appearance as “the electrocutes” in a movie (can’t remember which). btw, the electrocutes were cooler.

  57. Crystal Shit. The Doors cover band from the Dead Milkmen classic “Bitchin’ Camaro.” And don’t forget Camel Lips, er, L7 in Serial Mom.

  58. adam  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

um… mystik spiral from daria… led by trent

  59. How about “Hot Sundae”? Wasn’t that the name of the all-girl group that Kelly, Lisa, and Jessie formed to sing “I’m So Excited” on Saved By The Bell? And then Jessie has that breakdown over taking speed and says “I’m so… so… scared!”

On a more serious note (as serious as this subject can get), I’m kinda surprised this list is missing these:
-Steel Dragon (from Marky Mark’s Rockstar)
-Ruckus (aka My Morning Jacket in Elizabethtown)
    -Stillwater (from Almost Famous)
-Frankie Wilde (the “deaf DJ” from It’s All Gone Pete Tong)
    -Scrantonicity (from “The Office”!)

  60. There should be room at the bottom of the list for Steaming Wolf Penis from the show/movie Jerkbeast.

  61. Utopus  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

Why is OOIOO on this list? It is a real band fronted by Yoshimi P-We who is also of the Boredoms.

  62. solo  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

Where are “Flight of the Conchords”?

  63. Cecile  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

    wykked sceptre from mr. show!

  64. studyinscarlet  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

  65. Jill  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

    Scrantonicity II?

  66. Jill  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2007

    Scrantonicity II?

  67. No California Raisins?? No Guy Terrifico??

Love that CB4 is on this list, although they should be higher.

  68. The National

  69. Scott  |   Posted on Dec 1st, 2007

Another HUGE vote for Rod Torfleson’s Armada featuring Herman Menderchuck!!!!

Also big ups for the Berserker vote.

  70. What about Reggie and the Full Effect / Fluxuation / Common Denominator – all James Dewees fictional bands

  71. Greg  |   Posted on Dec 2nd, 2007

I guess fictional bands are better when they are actually real bands (e.g., The Monkees, Gorillaz and Blues Brothers appearing at the top). Who wrote this list, St. Anslem?

And where is Apollonia Six from Purple Rain? Or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes band from the early nineties?

  72. tyler  |   Posted on Dec 2nd, 2007

on the real-bands-releasing-music-under-fake-names front, i could go for some dukes of stratosphear.

  73. pAuL  |   Posted on Dec 2nd, 2007

    um, the zit remedy?

everybody wants sooooomethin’ they’ll take your mon-ay….and never give up!

  74. lindsay  |   Posted on Dec 3rd, 2007

Hep Alien-Lane’s band on Gilmore Girls. Although I guess they mostly did covers.

I also second Mystik Spiral and the Zit Remedy!

  75. edgar allen bro  |   Posted on Dec 3rd, 2007

    quasimoto?

  76. Baby81  |   Posted on Dec 5th, 2007

The Swollen Glands are the best band your will never hear.

  77. So you mention Barry Jive and the Uptown Five, but what about The Kathleen Turner Overdrive?!

aaaaand Jesse and the Rippers? Come on!

  78. chase  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Sorry, I guess Alvin And The Chipmunks should’ve been number one. And what about The Hospital Bombers?

  79. noah  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Billy and the Boingers f/k/a Deathtongue

  80. Vince  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

Visiting Day from The Sopranos aka Defile “We know you you are. We know what you do… We’re coming to Defile defile you. Stay out of our way. And don’t be so gay.”

  81. Vince  |   Posted on Dec 6th, 2007

… and Stillwater. How did we miss that one?

  82. SuperUnison, Polaris from The Adventures of Pete & Pete are a real band. they’re from connecticut. the lead singer was in the miracle legion but he still tours.

  83. Vyral  |   Posted on Dec 19th, 2007

    Electric Dream Machine.
