All the festivals we see in a year blur together pretty easily, but one of the more distinct, isolated memories we have from fest-hopping in ’07 was the endless sea of bodies writhing to Ghostland Observatory at ACL — playing on a bit-too-small stage opposite Dylan, no less. That’s hometown pride, mixed with that traditional Texan love for green lasers, tight white pants, insane dance moves, and men with histrionic voices and side ponytails for ya. In new tune “Heavy Heart,” Ghostland Observatory yowler Aaron Behrens makes like Electric Six taking a stab at Cupid Car Club, only if the soul was flying electro-rock style. The band’s third album and follow-up to last year’s Paparazzi Lightning finds the Austin duo of Behrens and oft-caped instrumental twiddler Thomas Ross Turner fleshing out their sound some.

Oh, note the dramatic middle synth moment? Behrens getting all post-apocalyptic At The Drive-In afterwards? That’s the flesh-y thing we were talking about. This is the cape.
