This week comes official word on Bonnaroo’s official 2008 festival lineup, but this year the pre-announce guessing game is literally just that: In advance of the big reveal, Radio Bonnaroo‘s offered up eleven riddles pertaining to the biggest acts (or more likely, those acts most conducive to being hinted at via riddle). Reader Joey T. sent ‘em in, so take a break from Facebook Scrabulous and do something worthwhile for a change (get ‘em right and win bragging points!)…

  1. “There is more than one Manchester”
  2. “Memphis isn’t Albany”
  3. “Clouds taste this way”
  4. “Some Herrings are red, Jimmy”
  5. “Hard Substance, Soft Substance”
  6. “Janis Joplin’s reserves will be preserved”
  7. “Rumors are just rumors, but twist them sideways, grow your humor hair and they become a more yen reality. No, this is not about Fleetwood Mac”
  8. “It’s not sour, what is sowed in the earth”
  9. “Three certain birds, add one”
  10. “Look to the center of Europe to get the sound, but the band comes from all around.”
  11. “Here is another clue for you message board people. Open up the church and you will see the steeple. Some of your guesses have been way off but correct for the wrong clues. Now I must cough.”

Enrich us.

UPDATE: Joey writes in with one more fresh one, from today…

12. Charlie’s imaginary band will not be playing and don’t believe what he wrote on his hand and the last few things he was not saying.

“Now they are just trying to wear my mind out by mixing up LOST and Bonnaroo,” he says. True! But at least you know for sure DriveSHAFT won’t be there.

oasis is gotta be number 1

  3. johnny  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Number 3 could be The Flaming Lips. For The Album called clouds taste metallic

  4. Lockie  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

5 could be iron and Wine and

    10 could be Beirut…

  5. Trevor  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    3. The Flaming Lips

  6. Garrett  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

I think 10 is Gogol Bordello, though that’s not much of a riddle if so.

  7. Nicklas  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    1. The Verve
    2. Allman Bros
    6. Pearl Jam
    9. Counting Crows
    10. Soul Coughing

  8. 3: Metallica
    5: Pearl Jam
    10: Gogol Bordello

  9. Chris and Niklas: I don’t think the first clue refers to a band at all but rather the Bonnaroo festival site, which is in Manchester, Tennessee.

  10. mike  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

sp, i think they’re trying to get at the fact its probably a band from Manchester, UK playing at the festival thats in Manchester, TN

  11. Ah, that makes sense Mike. I should know better than to attempt these brain teasers before noon.

  12. Anyone else notice that the Bonnaroo site crashed/was taken down? When is the announcement this week?

  13. yeah, 3 is definitely the flaming lips. TFL has played bonnaroo every year since i was born, probably. and they have dates the week before and the week after bonnaroo.

9 could be counting crows. that wouldn’t be bad i guess

  14. 4=Widespread Panic

  15. #1: Oasis.
    #2: Allman Bros?
    #3: Metallica
#4: A play on Jimmy Herring? Phil Lesh & Friends?
    #5: Iron & Wine?
    #6: No freaking clue.
    #7: Again, no freaking clue.
#8: A play on salt? Salty music? Modest Mouse?
#9: Zeppelins are airships, or “birds.” There are three remaining members, but they would need to add a drummer. Hmm… reaching?
    #10: Beirut
#11: When I “open the church” I see 8 fingers. “All the people” = All the members of the band? 8 members of a band with an affection for churches? Recording in a church, concerts in churches, religious themed albums? Sounds like Arcade Fire. And a fire causes smoke, which makes you cough. Again, reaching?

  16. hefe  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    #3 is metalica
    clouds taste metallic…

  17. STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

  18. I’m gonna have to go with Flaming Lips for metallic one… or at least hoping.

    8. Frehley’s Comet featuring Ace Frehley

    8. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
    9. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Andrew Bird, Old Crow Medicine Show, Black Crowes

and the one I’m most sure of

    11. R.E.M.

  25. Now that I’m fully awake, I feel more confident in offering my input. Therefore, I second everything on Richard Dick Richards list.

  26. 9. Black Crowes with Luther Dickinson (of NMAS)

  27. I say 10 is Liars

  28. JoeyT  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    #5 Carbon/Silicon?
only guess that differs from the others. It might help to ignore punctuation as well.

  29. Elise  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Hmmm #1 might be Morrissey. He is referred to as “Mr. Manchester”.
Arctic Monkeys would be good, but they are from Sheffield,England I believe.
    Oasis would blow my mind.

  30. Elliot  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

I’m thinking the first is The Manchester Orchestra.

  31. Marley  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Jimmy Herring is now with Widespread Panic…
    I’m sure that is #4

I think they have nearly every year,

  32. Sean  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

God I hope whatever the lineup is it’s better than most of the bands guessed here.

  33. Harry Dinwiddie  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    6. Pearl Jam

Pearl is Janis Joplin’s album that came out after she died. Preserves are jam

people, 3 is not Metallica. It’s the Lips. One of their albums is “Clouds Taste Metallic”

  38. Pierce  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    1. Manchester Orchestra. Surely.

  39. Jesse  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

I am pretty sure that 12. is a Oasis. Check out number 2 on charlie’s list: http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Charlie%27s_list …. “Wonderwall”!

  41. grover  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    1. I don’t know!
    2. I don’t know!
    3. I don’t know!

    10. I don’t know!
    11. I don’t know!

  42. taylor  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

i thought 3 was flaming lips, but its just a clue…they wanted you to think “clouds taste metallic” = metallica. plus flaming lips played last year…and i was rather dissapointed with their performance.

  43. #8 mudhoney

  44. shockadow  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Don’t be such pretentious douches. Metallica WAS awesome. If they play For Whom the Bell Tolls and Orion(ect.) It would make a criminally insane event. All of those sleepless hippies, all drugged out and bumping into one another…
    Frickin’ rawk-n-roll, maaaaaaaan!!!

  45. afton  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

check out inforoo.org bonnaroo clues thread for more clues… they’ve announced about 6 today.

  46. Finchmeister  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    Only definite is Oasis.

    Manchester Orchestra is likely.

    No Arcade Fire.

  47. Richard Dick Richards  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Candlebox & Seven Mary Three just dropped off of the festival (according to my sources). The two have a co-headlining tour planned this summer, and Bonnaroo conflicts with the opening date at the Indiana State Fair (w/ Diamond Rio).

  48. Cameron  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

    1. The Verve
    2. MIA
    3. Metallica
    4. Widespread Panic
    5. Pearl Jam
    6. Pearl Jam
    10. Either DeVotchKa or Gogol Bordello
    11. arcade fire

  49. Logan  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

#3 could either be the Lips or Metallica, but I’m leaning towards the latter since the Lips were there last year.

  50. serge  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

Beirut was #10. Now it’s most likely Gogol Bordello.

  51. andy  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2008

when they first started were called the new yardbirds page, bonham, plant then jon paul to form zeppelin

  52. SK-420  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2008

    Here is my hope:

It’s not sour what is sowed from the earth:
    Sour = Kraus, Earth = Plant…

    3 Certain Birds + 1:
    Black Crowes + Jimmy Page…

And… that brings hope of Superjam?!!?

  53. justin  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2008

what about gomez for #1? I’m not sure if they’re from manchester but its a lyric in one of their songs

  54. pip3r  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2008

#5 carbon silicon. whoever said that earlier you are a genius. that is awesome they are sick.

  55. jz– DeVotchKa is not number 10….they’re not really from “all around” at all; just the midwest. my money is on gogol for that one. which is awesome. but didn’t they play last year anyway? so not as much of a surprise…

  56. pip3r  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2008

#10 is Air. dont you think? center of europe, paris? air comes from all around?

  57. PJ, Metallica, Alison Kraus + Plant for sure.

Number 1 however, would seem to be Morrissey. That is way too easy though. Johnny Marr currently plays guitar for Modest Mouse. He is also from Manchester. What if it was The Smiths?
