One of the more magical aspects from Sufjan’s The BQE were the colorfully morphing backdrop projections: Towards the end of the night, there was one that looked a lot like the psychedelic vines in Deborah Johnson’s mesmerizing video for The Avalanche instrumental “The Palm Sunday Tornado Hits Crystal Lake” (you can catch a fragment of the one we mean if you click here and scroll). Here, when things start sizzling, the shapes and sizes grow as ornate and overlapping as the swells emerging from their biologically baroque twists.
It’s like Space Invaders reimagined by Takashi Murakami. The video’s included on Asthmatic Kitty’s DVD Encyclopedia Asthmatica out 3/4 on AK. You can learn more and pre-order here.
