Being children in bloom of the ’90s and all, we were surprisingly pleased by “Cowboys,” an unexpected return to the plugged-in goodness of Recovering The Satellites (aka Counting Crows’ last stand before a decade of cheese diving). The other stuff from Saturday Nights, Sunday Mornings has been a bit more middling. The band’s put up four videos at Amazon (more like cuts and pastes of studio footage): one for “Cowboys” and three tunes you haven’t heard yet. “Insignificant” is on the rock side (or the Saturday Nights side), the other two are Sunday Mornings fare. “Le Ballet” breaks out of the band’s standard slow jam mold, although it does get repetitious, while “On A Tuesday In Amsterdam Long Ago” is a “Miller’s Angels” type Duritz-and-piano ballad which has a nice seventh-chord in the hook. That one’s not a departure stylistically, but like “Cowboys,” it’s most resembling when they were at the height of their powers. If you want resouped versions of Recovering tunes, “Cowboys” and “On A Tuesday” are your picks. If you’re feeling nostalgic, watch ‘em at Amazon.

WHO CARES???
I do
I care too. The Crows are amazing. Adam Duritz is sexy ugly. His voice… his lyrics… if you’ve ever seen him live, you’d know how amazing his performances truly are. He just has an incredible way, doing things to his songs live to make them innovative, and not “just what you hear on the cd” – which admittedly, is still pretty amazing.
Admit it, even if you think you’re some cool alternative, emo lover who is “too cool” to like something so mainstream – admit it – you will rock out every time you hear Mr. Jones.
Hard Candy wasn’t the best album ever, but it was still fun and skilled. Anna Begins is probably one of the top 20 most ingenius, innovative, original songs ever.
There’s a little piece of Maria in every song I sing too…
One of the few bands that I enjoy on studio albums and absolutely HATE when seeing live performances. Duritz doing the rambling lyrics thing annoys me to no end.
Is this website getting cash from viacom or some other company? urban outfitters-whiskey-toyota ads, counting crows news, robyn concert pics, and mtv comedians are not typically “indie”… please just tell me so i can choose not to be part of the guerilla marketing of thirty something advertisers.
And this is in the wikipedia article about stereogum: “In late 2006, Stereogum received an influx of capital through Bob Pittman’s private investment entity The Pilot Group.”
Pittman supposedly bought this blog and took the fall for aol/time warner: http://gawker.com/news/top/bob-pittman-will-buy-you-now-210450.php
Are multinational corporations now part of the “indie” scene?
I hate this band and their music! And Adam Duritz is one of the biggest dickheads on the planet!
You realize that websites have advertising to exist, right? It’s actually optional to click on banner ads too. don’t know where youve been for the last ten years but mtv doesn’t play counting crow s. your argument doesn’t even make sense
Why is Adam Duritz such a dickhead? I don’t understand how this is tossed around like common knowledge. I’ve never seen him anything but gracious and open to his audience. What bands do you like? Please let me know so that I can insult you and your taste in music.
‘recovering the satellites’ is one of the best albums of the 90s. very under-rated, and lost due to the somewhat just hype of the crows being cheesy.
regardless of whether one likes the band or not, i’d like some proof as to why adam duritz is a dickhead. like rob, i’ve only ‘seen’ him be pretty appreciative of his fanbase.
If you re read my post I don’t think I was insulting anyone’s taste in music Rob. I said I don’t like the Counting Crows and Adam Duritz, that’s just my opinion and I was stating it. Sorry to have offended you Rob.
And now I know to keep my opinion on Adam Duritz and the Counting Crows to myself!
seriously why are you bothering to give us updates on counting crows
just because it isn’t a post on panda bear or battles doesn’t mean you all need to lash out. try growing up. counting crows have made some great albums – some of you need to just deal with the fact that pitchfork not covering a band’s every move doesn’t make them irrelevant or lame. I can’t help but picture the people who flip their shit every time a “mainstream” band is talked about here being those people at a concert who are constantly looking around to see who else is there and how they need to model their own behavior.
that’s all. you can resume playing your dan deacon cds now.
Look no amount of hipster-shaming will change the fact that Counting Crows sucked in 1993, they sucked in 1998 and they still suck now. The only good thing about them is that when someone argues they have good lyrics or that they put out good albums, I know I never have to give a damn about that person’s opinion on music ever again.
From this month’s Blender: Rob Tannebaum: “What would your exes say about you?” Adam Duritz: “Well, my mother wouldn?t want to read this. But if you asked my girlfriends, they would tell you: ‘That boy loves to eat pussy.’ And I am damn good at it.”
