We may be running on fumes, but we do still need to run, so we’re busy marking up our “to do” lists for the night. Fittingly, for a finale, we’re aiming for a dance-y night, with folks like Kid Sister and A-Trak at the Fool’s Gold/Matrix party. Actually, High Places were so good at our party today, we might check them out again, too — this time it’s part of the Free Agency/Todd P showcase, and they’re bookmarked by the superbly noisy Knyfe Hyts and the superbly happy (and bouncy) Matt & Kim. Show up early and catch Ponytail. Or, if you like your classic Texas psychedelics with your bbq, head to Stubb’s to see Roky Erickson (with Okkervil River before ‘em). OK, we need some food and water. Onward…

Have you heard Evil Urges? It’s very strange in an awesome way.

    Moron Lefsetz on SXSW:

Sending me a CD or schlepping your equipment to SXSW isn’t going to make your music any better. If it’s good, put it on the Web, energize your fans, they’ll spread the word. But you probably suck and are looking for the easy way out. And crying that you just can’t make any money. Boofuckinghoo.

Golden Animals will be the band to watch once you get home from the SXSW madness.

Did anyone catch that Iranian act, Hypernova? I attended and thought it would be some sort of gimmick act that I would leave after 5 minutes, but I really was blown away by their melodies. It had a very Joy Division-esque sound to them.

Saturday at SXSW normally sucks, but this performance by Hypernova really made my day worthwhile. Check them out..I think they have a few tracks up on their myspace.

WE GET IT! YOU ARE GOING TO SXSW! ENOUGH WITH THE 1000000 POSTS ON IT. GO TO IT, ENJOY, AND WRITE 1 OR 2 SUMMARY POSTS. THE REST OF US IN THE WORLD DONT CARE!!!!

  8. river, do you have a link for evil urges? Its my most anticipated release this year, but I’m relatively positive it hasn’t leaked yet. Please prove me wrong, the live boot from SXSW sounds absolutely fucking incredible

Inside Mohawk was the place to be Saturday. Anyone who was at Habana Calle 6 on Wednesday (or who visits a lot of bands My Spaces) knew this, but it seemed that a large portion of the crowd at Mohawk on Saturday were unfamiliar with These Are Powers. Simply put, it was one of the best performances I have ever seen and one of the few times I have attended a show where I felt that everyone’s minds were collectively blown. You know, I don’t really care if bands I listen to are innovative (so long as the songs are good and not plagiarized), and not liking many things where guitars, bass, and drums are not the primary instruments means that I don’t really have that luxury anyway. But every now and then I am lucky enough to happen upon something that is decidedly different-a reimagining of the possibilities of the basic guitar/bass/drums setup. A lethal combination of mood, catharsis, rhythm, volume, and TEXTURE: http://www.myspace.com/thesearepowers
