Well, part of it. Last year featured a Slint reunion, Daydream Nation retelling, coke rap, and awesome attire. What does P4K having in store for Union Park (and its surrounds) this year? We don’t know everything just yet — there will reportedly be 40 acts in all — but they have announced a few of the crowd faves and biggies. Though maybe none as sonically big as last year’s ear-slayers, Mastodon.

Animal Collective
Spiritualized
!!!
M. Ward
Boris
Vampire Weekend
Dizzee Rascal
No Age
Atlas Sound
Fleet Foxes
Extra Golden
El Guincho

Additionally, P4K’s teaming with ATP to present “Don’t Look Back,” this time featuring Public Enemy performing It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. Will Flavor Flav make it? Should he be? There are still two dozen or so more acts to be announced. (Hopefully Jack Johnson’s one of them.) For now, great to see BTW El Guincho in that initial roll call. We have to wonder, though, will Zooey accompany Matt? The festival takes place Friday, 7/18 through Sunday, 7/20. Tickets go on sale this Wednesday at noon CST. You can get more info here.

Yay, Vampire Weekend. Again. And again. And, apparently, again.

    FAIL

  2. I think Ezra Koenig and Wata from Boris should throw down fisticuffs… my money’s on Wata.

I would think Flav will definitely be there. How could they perform the entire album, particularly cold lampin, don’t believe the hype, show em whatcha got, etc, without him? I’m pretty excited for Spiritualized and M. Ward.

The Vampire Weekend backlash is pointless. Good band, good album, good look. RELAX

  5. Self  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

Man, I would love to see the Fleet Foxes, but that’s about it, thus far.

  6. Vampire Weekend blows. Mainly because I liked them last year and now my friends like them too. Valid?

  7. Cunt  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

    No, Curt. Not valid.

  8. Pretty sure I was being sarcastic?

  9. potted palms  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

    What, no Jack Johnson?

  10. mike  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

  12. dave  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

    spiritualized, yeah.

  13. blub  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

I wanna see Panda Bear and Ezra Koenig have a play-off.

Aside from that, TOTAL WIN. Too bad I don’t live in IL.

  14. whoa  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

Whoa!! BORIS + ATLAS SOUND = 10 pts

good thing for the obviously badly hyped band that is sharing this stage… tsk tsk pitchfork..

honestly, they wouldn’t get so much crap if they didn’t love the hype themselves.

  15. coachella, pitchfork, all points west  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2008

festivals suck this year. coachella, all points west, pitchfork…

i’m starting to think 2007 was the best year to be alive so far

These guys are pretty sick. I really like the way their riffs have this heavy swing to them. They actually remind me of the Josh Dion Band. Except everything that they play has this awesome uplifting feel to it ? its got some real soul. I heard they are going to be playing like here woozyfly. com March 12th. Its kind of cool that they are broadcasting live. Now lots of bands are stepping up to the kinds of things that only bands like radio used to be able to do.

  17. James P  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

Animal Collective is playing. What more can you really ask for? The others are just free gifts.

Vampire Weekend. I have nothing to add about them, but I wasn’t sure if I could post without at least mentioning the name.

I’m curious to see if there will be any repeats/returning bands from the festival’s first year? “It Takes a Nation” is a very important, classic album, but I’m not that excited. Few hip-hop acts put on a great live show, especially with an entire album, start to finish (GZA’s “Liquid Swords” was a disaster!)

I sure hope the other two acts for Friday night are really something, like The Flaming Lips and “The Soft Bulletin.” Oh, and try to get some hosts/MCs who AREN’T total douchebags.

    Crossing Fingers For:
    -Santogold
    -Beirut
    -A-Trak
-Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
    -Health (supposedly awesome live..)
    -M.I.A.
-My Bloody Valentine (It doesn’t hurt to dream…)
    -Dirty Projectors
    -Chromeo
    -Pavement (see MBV…)
    -Man Man
-Burial (probably *not* visually amazing, but to DANCE to)
    -Glass Candy/Chromatics (see Burial)
    -The National

    Very Likely IMHO:
    -Yeasayer
    -Muscles
    -Black Lips
    -Justice/Simian
    -Dinosaur Jr. (Don’t Look Back?)
    -Los Campesinos!

  19. D Willy  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

Burial is an anonymous artist and therefore will not play. Exhale.

  20. Dinosaur Jr. as a Don’t Look Back artist would be incredible. As would Flaming Lips “Soft Bulletin.” But MBV playing Loveless would take any cake, and then eat that cake too.

  21. Wow wow wow.
I may just take a trip to the US for this one…!!

One thing that sucks about living in Chicago is that so many of these acts only come in town for shitty festivals. I have to see Vampire Weekend to catch !!! on their only trip here since Lollapalooza. I am pissed my only opportunity to see radiohead is in a field with 100,000 sweaty people in 90 degree weather, instead of a regular concert venue.

  24. can we have a thread for the site re-design? i want to celebrate (bash) it.

ok i havent decided on it yet.. but its… WEIRD….

    • Yes, we will have a thread for the redesign today. We’re just gonna fix the broken-y things so you know what to bash and what’s not intentional.

      First.

“im proud to say i never liked vampire weekend and i never will.” – adrienne

not that i’m proud about it, but my name is adrienne and this is totally true for me too. weird.

  26. adrienne  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

agreed caleb! I was looking through posts to see if anyone started one.
    but change is good… right?

  27. Madonna  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

    Boris is a funny name

  28. dubs  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

    ^^^I agree

  29. But, Vampire Hands is right there! Get Slint to do Spiderland again, and throw in some Alien Sex Fiend, and just go for the vampire theme…

  30. hopeful (but deluded)  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

I always skip out on the ATP night. In my wondrous wind, though, I’ve come up with the two artists who would convince me to go. The more likely of the two is Gang of Four playing Entertainment. The far less likely is Neutral Milk Hotel playing In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Yeah, that one will have to stay in my head.

  31. Re: Don’t Look Back

Last year when P4K announced their initial lineup, they mentioned they were saving Friday for their initial foray into Don’t Look Back territory. When they finally announced it was Sonic Youth playing Daydream Nation, no one was surprised. Why? Because Sonic Youth had already signed up to play other Don’t Look Back gigs, it made sense. Even less surprising was Slint, because they too had already signed up for other DLB gigs. I bring this up because, like Sonic Youth and Slint, Public Enemy had already been enlisted for other DLB shows this year, and rather than spend the next few weeks dreaming about unlikely scenarios in which My Bloody Valentine play Loveless or Pavement reunite, we could just check out who else is playing DLB shows and make an educated guess.

(My money’s on Raekwon and Sebadoh)

  32. NickG  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

Everyones comments seem much more relaxed since the new layout. Hopefully it will last.

  33. Spiritualized, Atlas Sound, Animal Collective.

The rest I could care less about.
(the verdict’s still out with Fleet Foxes)

  34. Kinda lackluster so far, but I’m sure the lineup will fill out nicely. El Guincho is quite a catch tho, I just don’t think its enough to convince me to trek to Chicago yet

  35. butts  |   Posted on Mar 12th, 2008

    no you weren’t

  36. Alex  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2008

Can someone please tell me why everyone is making such a big deal out of Vampire Weekend? Yes, A Punk is an incredibly catchy song, but the rest of the album isn’t that great. I hope these guys like being a bump on the indie radar because in five years I guarantee that no one will remember them.

    Listen to Tom Waits

  37. Eric  |   Posted on Mar 18th, 2008

    Pemberton FTW

  38. Spiritualized, !!!, Animal Collective and Boris sound tempting. I went to the Pitchfork fest a couple years ago when Les Savy Fav put on one of the best performances…well…ever. So many great memories of that…getting hit in the shoulder by a Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu)-tossed water bottle, sweating my ass off to Out Hud (R.I.P.), watching kids from the pool next door attempt to dance to Four Tet, trying to see Broken Social Scene over a 7 foot tall dood in a Poison shirt, finally getting to see Tortoise, and FUCKING DEATH FROM ABOVE!!! I don’t think they’ll ever top that lineup.
