It’s been over two years since First Impressions Of Earth, but the Strokes are always fresh in our minds thanks to a neverending parade of covers (Rhymefest, Chris Thile, Howie Beck, Lightspeed Champion, etc.). Plus, Albert Hammond Jr. has recorded two solo albums (Como Te Llama is out this summer) in the hiatus. It’s next to impossible to record a Strokes album without the guitarist.

But, now we have some news. Almost.

Bassist Nikolai Fraiture took to his section of thestrokes.com the other day with this non-update on the album, but news on A Kind Of Dream, a thirty-minute black-and-white film for which he composed music.

Meanwhile, Albert (AKA Judd Apatow 1987) turned 28 on 4/9. He celebrated by watching Gossip Girl. Via NY Mag:

Less than a year later, Ed [Westwick, who plays Chuck] seems to have settled in nicely. He pals around with hedge-fund managers, plays gigs on the Lower East Side with his band the Filthy Youth, and frequents the Rose Bar, subMercer, and the Beatrice Inn. In other words, he’s living the life.

“Did I tell you I met Albert Hammond Jr. the other night?” he asked Leighton one afternoon at the Rose Bar, when she came in to hang out with him and castmate Jessica Szohr, who plays Dan’s former love interest Vanessa. “It was so fucking cool. He knew who I was. Apparently he’s a fan of Gossip Girl. He was like, ‘I love your character, man.’”

“You love him,” Leighton said, laughing, as Ed waxed on.

“I do, I fucking love him,” Ed said dreamily, putting on Leighton’s sunglasses.

It was Ed’s day off, and he was intoxicated.

Sounds about right.

  1. Ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssuper-fuck the Strokes.

    • Uh huh. Supporting the Bowery Mission and participating in a benefit for children with land-mine afflicted injuries. What assholes.

      • They may have heart – but the “sounds” they create is far from magic. I like to call it ‘not good’. Who placed the mines, by the way?

        • can we make it multiple choice:

          A: RCA Records
          B: Julian Casablancas
          C: Scarlet Johanson
D: America, in some indirect way that will have roots in a corporate, military-industrial conspiracy and/or USA’s providing the mines to warring undeveloped nations (most probably to both sides of the conflict) – the details of which you will shortly break down for us, but with some degree of condescending douchebagery.
E: that was a rhetorical question

    • Hate all you want. Thank god for the Strokes.

fuck all of you…the strokes are awesome. just because they dont sound like pure noise for 40 minutes (fucking animal collective, i hate you all) doesnt mean they arent a talented and catchy band

    • EnchantingWizardofRhythm  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

I agree with you on the Strokes…I think they’ll turn out something fantastic with their long hiatus however Animal Collective, albeit nothing alike, is also awesome. I wouldn’t consider them noise rock though Nick, you must not like freak folk…noise rock is more J&MC, Sonic Youth, or to a lesser extent MBV

      • Nick  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

yeah i shouldnt say noise rock, and i shouldnt have said i hate them. i just simply never “got” there music. i listened to peacebone and fireworkds, etc, and nothing clicked at all.

the strokes, however, were a completely different story. how can anyone not love every single song on Is This It? And Room on Fire got such a bad rap for not being “different” enough. Who fucking cares? If the music is good, i could give a fuck how they have progressed as a band. And i truly believe that the bad rep ROF got from the media was the reason for the Strokes trying too hard on FIOE. I think they’ll put it all together to finally make another amazing album for #4

Yes, it’s unfashionable to like the Strokes right now. But, I’d take “Is This It?” over 90% of the indie bands today.

  7. Sean Jean  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

I can usually sift out ignorant indie hipsters based on their view of the Strokes.

  8. juano  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

How the fuck does NY magazine think that is the “best show ever”.

  9. juano  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

How the fuck does NY magazine think that is the “best show ever”?

  10. I can’t believe that little tiny comment is actually making the news…

I am interested to hear if they’re going to continue down the prodigal path the began trekking with FIoE

  11. Sweeeeet. I’ve been excited about this all week. Pffft, it it weren’t for the Strokes half of you a-holas would be wearing Limp Bizkit shirts and jerking it over Korn or even worse, a bunch of bands who followed in their footsteps. Go Strokes!

  12. recoys  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

the walkmen blow the strokes out of the water… they haven’t produced shit worth listening to since is this it? and partial goodness of room on fire. No to mention Alberts solo shit sucked. Can’t wait for the new album….to shit on!!!

    • the plot against people  |   Posted on Apr 27th, 2008

Duh, the Walkmen are better. The Walkmen are better than almost every ‘indie’ band out there.
I don’t see how that proves that the next Strokes album is going to be bad, though.

  13. this just in: Ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssuper-fuck the Strokes.

  14. Nick  |   Posted on Apr 25th, 2008

    ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssuper-suck my dick

  15. i worried that the strokes were rip-offs too until i finally realized that when i put them on, i have no desire to change to television, lou reed, etc. (as much as i love them too)

isn’t that the test of a true rip-off band?

  16. Harriet The Spy  |   Posted on Apr 26th, 2008

Buffy’s little sister hasn’t shown up yet. That’s next week. She’ll always be Harriet the Spy to me.

  17. nice to see new york magazine in the business of sexualizing teens. UGH!

  18. ian g  |   Posted on Apr 26th, 2008

    “ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssuper-suck my dick”

    LOL!

I love the strokes. first impressions was an AWESOME CD. Juicebox, You Only Live Once, Ize of the World… great songs. Can’t wait for the fourth album!

I would also like to here a damn update on the Vines. though i’m sure no one really cares for them ahahah

    • A friend of mine saw them at SXSW and said they were in great form. She might be biased though as she really loves them, heh. I was pretty disappointed in the last album, but hopefully the next will be back to form. She said Craig looked really happy, well rested and healthy.

It’s amazing how fast public opinion of a band like The Strokes can be swayed. First they’re hailed as the second coming, now they’re as good as dirt? C’mon!

You hipsters who go along with hating bands just because they aren’t the flavor du jour really don’t deserve to listen to good music. Go ahead, go back to idolizing some subpar asinine crap that isn’t worth the space it takes up on your iPod, and leave the real music to those of us who have working ears and are eagerly awaiting The Strokes’ next album.

  20. Kevin  |   Posted on Apr 28th, 2008

Can’t wait for this. For what it’s worth, when I first heard “Is this it,” I felt liberated. I can understand why some don’t like them, but I’ve always been a big fan. I’ve always been a big fan of Nirvana, too, and still like them even though I know a lot of people who used to like them, but hate them now. I see a lot of this with the Strokes.

  21. Andrew  |   Posted on Apr 28th, 2008

The Strokes rule. They’ve been hated on for doing absolutely nothing wrong more than Donovan McNabb.

  22. aaah music elitists…. the strokes are good and so is gossip girl! leave scene kids alone :p

    • The Strokes are amazing.
Gossip Girl is the filth of the earth.

Therefore, if a member of the Strokes likes Gossip Girl…said member needs to be re-educated Communist style.

It doesn’t take a music elitist to get that one.
