It’s been over two years since First Impressions Of Earth, but the Strokes are always fresh in our minds thanks to a neverending parade of covers (Rhymefest, Chris Thile, Howie Beck, Lightspeed Champion, etc.). Plus, Albert Hammond Jr. has recorded two solo albums (Como Te Llama is out this summer) in the hiatus. It’s next to impossible to record a Strokes album without the guitarist.
But, now we have some news. Almost.
Bassist Nikolai Fraiture took to his section of thestrokes.com the other day with this non-update on the album, but news on A Kind Of Dream, a thirty-minute black-and-white film for which he composed music.
Meanwhile, Albert (AKA Judd Apatow 1987) turned 28 on 4/9. He celebrated by watching Gossip Girl. Via NY Mag:
Less than a year later, Ed [Westwick, who plays Chuck] seems to have settled in nicely. He pals around with hedge-fund managers, plays gigs on the Lower East Side with his band the Filthy Youth, and frequents the Rose Bar, subMercer, and the Beatrice Inn. In other words, he’s living the life.
“Did I tell you I met Albert Hammond Jr. the other night?” he asked Leighton one afternoon at the Rose Bar, when she came in to hang out with him and castmate Jessica Szohr, who plays Dan’s former love interest Vanessa. “It was so fucking cool. He knew who I was. Apparently he’s a fan of Gossip Girl. He was like, ‘I love your character, man.’”
“You love him,” Leighton said, laughing, as Ed waxed on.
“I do, I fucking love him,” Ed said dreamily, putting on Leighton’s sunglasses.
It was Ed’s day off, and he was intoxicated.
Sounds about right.

I agree with you on the Strokes…I think they’ll turn out something fantastic with their long hiatus however Animal Collective, albeit nothing alike, is also awesome. I wouldn’t consider them noise rock though Nick, you must not like freak folk…noise rock is more J&MC, Sonic Youth, or to a lesser extent MBV
yeah i shouldnt say noise rock, and i shouldnt have said i hate them. i just simply never “got” there music. i listened to peacebone and fireworkds, etc, and nothing clicked at all.
the strokes, however, were a completely different story. how can anyone not love every single song on Is This It? And Room on Fire got such a bad rap for not being “different” enough. Who fucking cares? If the music is good, i could give a fuck how they have progressed as a band. And i truly believe that the bad rep ROF got from the media was the reason for the Strokes trying too hard on FIOE. I think they’ll put it all together to finally make another amazing album for #4
Yes, it’s unfashionable to like the Strokes right now. But, I’d take “Is This It?” over 90% of the indie bands today.

I love the strokes. first impressions was an AWESOME CD. Juicebox, You Only Live Once, Ize of the World… great songs. Can’t wait for the fourth album!
I would also like to here a damn update on the Vines. though i’m sure no one really cares for them ahahah
A friend of mine saw them at SXSW and said they were in great form. She might be biased though as she really loves them, heh. I was pretty disappointed in the last album, but hopefully the next will be back to form. She said Craig looked really happy, well rested and healthy.
It’s amazing how fast public opinion of a band like The Strokes can be swayed. First they’re hailed as the second coming, now they’re as good as dirt? C’mon!
You hipsters who go along with hating bands just because they aren’t the flavor du jour really don’t deserve to listen to good music. Go ahead, go back to idolizing some subpar asinine crap that isn’t worth the space it takes up on your iPod, and leave the real music to those of us who have working ears and are eagerly awaiting The Strokes’ next album.
Can’t wait for this. For what it’s worth, when I first heard “Is this it,” I felt liberated. I can understand why some don’t like them, but I’ve always been a big fan. I’ve always been a big fan of Nirvana, too, and still like them even though I know a lot of people who used to like them, but hate them now. I see a lot of this with the Strokes.
The Strokes rule. They’ve been hated on for doing absolutely nothing wrong more than Donovan McNabb.
