Sound issues plagued Prince’s set from where we stood yesterday, and in any videos we found on YouTube, but hey … last night was cool. In fact, Coachella was “the coolest place on earth” last night, according to his Purpleness. Morris Day and Sheila E. both sang leads during the set, but it was Prince’s soulful (not Korny) reinvention of Radiohead’s “Creep” that everyone’s still talking about. Prince and band covered the Beatles and Sarah McLachlan, too. Here’s the setlist and some video that you should watch before The Artist asks YouTube to remove it.

Prince was watchable in 2006 ... If you’re going to trot out an old band, again, at least create some suspense. Giant festivals like Coachella and All Tomorrow’s Parties have made a name for themselves by bringing back bands people thought ...

That’s gonna be tough to top, Roger Waters.

  5. Oh Christ this was awesome! I’m just….. no words….. no words can describe……

  6. Sound problems? Man, that is unfortunate, dear ‘Gum. Everything sounded amazing from where I was standing. I’ve seen Prince several times now and this was mind-blowing. Here’s a link to the Creep cover my girlfriend taped…from earlier in the song and less jumpy (forgive my WOOOO!).

I’m not familiar enough with Prince’s music to praise him on the whole, but i really like that cover of Creep. And i usually HATE covers of Creep, almost on principle.

    Needs more “Batdance.”

  12. WOWZERS. I was trying to blow off the addition of Prince to the line-up…but apparently he freaking DELIVERED.

Note to Stereogum: Sarah McLachlan not McLachlin. Even the random poster on prince.org got it right — although they got the song name wrong (should just be “Angel”, not “The Arms of an Angel”).

Sound problems? Your lazy asses must have been in VIP. I was there for the first song, but realized it sounded like crap and got out into the crowd and it sounded amazing.

How can Prince possibly manage sounding seductive on “Creep”? The man truly is a living legend. At this point, he truly can do no wrong.

It STILL blows my mind that Billboard dissed Prince by excluding him from their top 100 (not 10, not 50, but 100) guitarists of all time. Boo boo boo to Billboard. Wish I could be at EVERY Prince concert.

  17. Hey! Hey camera-guy! Hey next time you go to a concert, hey take your friggin Ritalin! Zoom in, zoom out, jesus man! chill!

  18. I like his version of “Creep” it proves he can still rock just like he did when he recorded those guitar songs like Purple Rain and so on…PLUS creeps one of my alltime faveorite songs from the 90s!

I hear that the the horn players were 4 guys from Grupo Fantasma and one guy from P-Funk. I keep hearing about this Grupo Fantasma band. i just listened to their music on Myspace and it’s actually pretty sick! I don’t normally find myself listening to latin Music but i’m totally going to buy their new release!

  23. i wish he would trust his newer material. there’s some fantastic stuff on “3121″ and “planet earth” – those songs deserve to be played live. on stage is where he can prove to the casual fan that his work has steadily progressed …

  24. He?s on fire right now,
    He really is.
He?s just so fuckin? good???right at the end of that clip sounds like a guy in the crowd shouts ?EPIC!!!? which sums it up perfectly
A full on version of Lion Of Judah would have been perfect on that stage.

I can’t find the video of the Creep cover anywhere. I refuse to believe that the internet has been pussywhipped into submission by a shortarse egomaniac – someone has it. Put it up and when he sends you one of those letters, put that up too. And when he takes you to court record the whole thing on a camera phone and put that up too. Did Prince ask permission to sing the song in the first place? I’m gonna go down to the street corner right now and sing Prince songs for change, which is FANTASTIC because I’ll be directly infringing copywright laws and presumably impeding Prince’s ability to earn a living from his art. Prince you are a fool.
