It feels like we’ve typed the words “Scott Weiland” more times in the past month than during the height of the grunge era. Fair enough, we didn’t have a blog during the height of the grunge era, but he has been in the news: After Weiland’s onstage antics and subsequent firing from Velvet Revolver, he performed his first STP show in ages, kick-starting their summer tour. You can’t keep a multi-tasking ex-junkie down, so of course he has other plans, too. For starters, as Billboard reported last week, he’s recording a solo double album with Steve Albini, and plans to release it in November. Now Weiland’s blogged about that, as well as a forthcoming autobiography.
Via MySpace:
Hello Everyone,
I felt the need to check in and let everyone know what the latest and greatest is … as you know, my original band, STP, have reunited and are gearing up for our 4 month tour of the US this summer. I’m really excited to be back in cohoots with my old buddies and share that tingly feeling when we perform.
I’ve been crazy busy since coming off tour and never get the chance to sleep in anymore! I have been working on my solo record, which will be a double album due for a November release. Its gonna be awesome, with many different musical influences like rock, punk, r&b as well as an eclectic blend that we’ve come up with over the years. Can’t wait for everyone to hear it. I’m also in the process of writing my autobiography along with famed writer David Ritz, also due out toward the end of the year. It will be a collection of stories, experiences and lessons throughout my life. Definitely a good read.
Well, I gotta hit the studio now. Ill do my best to check in every now and then. I want you to know, I ALWAYS appreciate the love and support and am excited to give you all a great tour.
Cheers,
Scott
Cheers, Scott. Something he hasn’t blogged, though, is that he’ll being doing some prison time. Wonder if that’ll make it in to the autobiography? Hey, it worked for Malcolm X. Via Hollywood Insider:
Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland was recently sentenced to 192 hours in jail for a November 2007 DUI in Los Angeles. EW has now learned exclusively that the singer will serve his sentence, which the judge ordered he do before May 28, and be out in time to commence the band’s 65-date reunion tour, which kicks off May 17 in Columbus, Ohio. Weiland’s lawyer confirmed this with EW via Weiland’s spokesperson. A statement from Weiland should be released soon, along with further details.
In the midst of all this, Velvet Revolver continue their online quest for a new singer. As of press time, it’s unclear whose path — theirs or their ex — is sketchier.

Wow, after forging a nearly two-decade career as an Eddie Vedder sound-alike, Weiland’s finally going to release that solo record everyone’s been clamoring for. I can’t wait for the “Into the Mild” soundtrack’s release. I honestly hope Albini’s just bringing Scotty into the studio to berate him and stuff him in the soundproof ductwork.
This’ll be Scott’s SECOND Solo release. And, no. he’s not a Vedder sound-alike. do some research and educate yourself. listen to Tiny Music, or his first solo trek. Scott’s got extremely diverse pipes.
Keep posting on him ‘Gum. i’m not getting tired of it.
Wow, it’s Scott Weiland’s biggest fan. Hell of an accomplishment. Did you ever notice that Stereogum only posts about him when he does something fairly ridiculous (like tries to record a double album of his solo work) or fucks up? Do you sense any IRONY in those paragraphs that aren’t Weiland’s kick-ass blog entry and his item on the police blotter.
And he’s not an Eddie Vedder sound-alike… no, not at all. He’s not a poor man’s Vedder… or Axl (even moreso than the current Axl)… or [insert glam rocker's name here]. He’s a commercial label creation. Hell, Sotty Kline isn’t even the the top 500 manic depressives in music, let alone artists.
Such a waste.
You call him a poor man’s Vedder like Vedder is someone to be envious of in the first place. Pearl Jam are and always have been a joke. STP are at the very least a (slight) improvement. And if you knew anything about Albini you’d know that he’s always a total professional in the atudio, even to artists he dislikes. So much so that Gavin Rossdale invited him to his wedding to that B-A-N-A-N-A-S girl.
So, if Weiland’s a Vedder wannabe and Vedder sounds like a dying goat… that must mean Weiland is AWESOME!!! It’s so clear now. How didn’t I see that before? Thank you, sir! Thank you for showing me the path to enlightenment! I was like a fly, a fly stuck in the … petroleum jelly of my own ignorance!!!
Yeah, Albini really cringes his way through sessions. I don’t know how he got through those Shellac, mclusky, Jawbreaker and Jon Spencer projects without setting himself aflame. I believe the Chicago Reader quoted him back in 1996 as saying “Why can’t they all be like Bush?” Well now he has that opportunity again. Maybe he can even lump Bush and STP together on a “Pale Comparisons of Grunge Bands” tour. That would be super awesome.
So I guess he has fucked his life up enough that he feels like writing about it? What a douchebag. What the world needs is another book by some coked out rocker with little talent, who sounds like so many others, telling people how he got by on looks and fame. Perhaps he will divulge how he has managed to avoid long term jail for being arrested countless numbers of times.
Fuck, I hate this guy. It is a true shame that he still makes music.
fuck you. Scott Weiland is not a fuckin’ douchebag! Go make some real music yourself u cunt, and don’t slag off others more talented than you!
All that image of Scottie needs is the same “banana suit” Owen Wilson was sporting as Dignan in ‘Bottle Rocket’, and my day would be set on _completion_.
cohoots
You’re all a bunch of big blacks. Music sucks, unless it’s made by blacks.
Damn these Pixies fans. DAMN THEM!
“Definitely a good read”
… for those who liked that Motley Crue book, but hated all of those big words and confusing phrases.
Isn’t grunge just a pale comparison of dogshit in the first place, though?
Now you’re getting it.
Fuck the autobiography. I’d be happy if Scott Weiland just put a shirt on.
right on BigBlack.
Weiland has never been a Vedder soundalike, all those comparisons back in the day made me queasy. pedestrian observations like that were outdated in 1994, let alone 2008.
BigBlack is the one who accused him of being an Eddie Vedder soundalike. Learn how to read.
What a coincidence, I just learned how to read this morning! This Scott fellow sounds like an interesting gentleman, I’ll invite him to my birthday party – in fact, you’re all invited! Reading on the internet was sure worth the effort! You meet such nice folks!
Yes! I can’t wait to hear Scotty’s take on R&B. That sounds like a treat.
It’s 2008 – can we please stop with the ridiculous “grunge” label already? It’s a bullshit term used by lazy writers and ignorant fans to lump together a bunch of bands who usually share very little in common (other than geography sometimes). Love or hate STP/Weiland, but they never sounded like “grunge” (with the possible exception of parts of Core) and sure as hell never cultivated the stereotypical look.
grunge rules
Wow, congratulations on missing the point entirely. First off, yes Weiland did ape Eddie Vedder on “Core” and the band did use just about every “grunge” stereotype known to man in its early videos and photography. Secondly, STP’s follow-up work has been derivative tofu pap that takes on the flavor of what ever surrounds it on “modern rock” radio playlists. Third, for his next trick, Weiland jumped into a band that was Guns ‘n’ Roses +1 and had the audacity to tell people he was doing something completely original. He was the most disingenuous and lazy adoptee since Nicole Richie.
Finally, you’re telling me that fucking Tad, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, et. al had NOTHING in common but fashion and geography? Are you seriously going to tell met that AIC and Soundgarden’s use of double bass somehow separates them from the pack of fuzzed-out, morose bands that surrounded them? Grunge may be a terrible label, but if you’re going to get all bent out of shape because you think that Dinosaur Jr. and the Butthole Surfers should have been held up like some sort of golden gods, then get on Gibby and J. Mascis’ asses for buying right into it and slipping into the stereotype in exchange for a spot on 120 Minutes.
Or better yet, why don’t you go blog about it in your gray flannel shirt. Oh wait…
WOW. it appears “BigBlack” has posted FIVE TIMES trying to fight everyone to the very end.. while most of the others had gone on with their lives, and ended their daily stop @ Stereogum.com, BigBlack stayed on-hand ready to fend off all those who oppose him. A true hero. We salute you BigBlack, you and all those who enter music message boards and spread negativity like cancer. If it weren’t for those like BigBlack, these comment areas would be nothing more than rational minded people sharing intellectual opinions with a humorous slant..
Now who would want that?
p.s. i wrote this because i knew BigBlack has bookmarked this page, and will be returning to make his half-hourly visit to this article.
Oh, I’m sorry “BIG WHITE” (all caps, no less), I didn’t realize I was ruining your afternoon of running shtick. Please, why don’t you continue this evening at the Catskills and spread some positivity about Scott Weiland and his myriad contributions to music as we know it. Tell us how there would be no Creed or Godsmack without Mr. Klein to show us the way. Please tell us, on a strictly intellectual plane, how Scott has built upon the foundations laid down by Boston and Bachman-Turner Overdrive to give us the reunion shed tour the world has been waiting for since Weiland’s fifth stint in rehab.
After all, this is serious subject matter we are discussing here. Far more compelling than Of Montreal’s rewording a song into an Outback Steakhouse jingle or the fat kid from Meatloaf’s AT&T commercial dropping by to say hi. Yes, this is just the kind of material that Howard Zinn has been trying to mine for decades, the cultural touchstone that has eluded him in his writing.
So go on, Chomsky, engage the site in a scholarly discussion. I’ll begin: Drug use and middling musicianship has been a core element in America’s popular music landscape since Buddy Bolden burst the capillaries in his neck while playing jazz under the influence of the jake in 1907. Draw the direct link to Weiland using various figures from musical history and contrast their talents with his. Exp. “Lou Reed once freebased heroin out the uppermost crevice of Nico’s buttocks and was the force behind ‘Metal Machine Music,’ but trumps Weilands talents solely on the merits of ‘White Light, White Heat.’”
But you have so many other sites to troll…
I THINK YOU’RE BOTH WRONG!!!
Sorry, always wanted to say that. There’s always the “the issue is too complex for us mere mortals to comprehend” guy in the comments field who tries to calm things down. I love that guy.
christ, this guy is delusional..
I can’t wait til tomorrow, when BigBlack’s self proclaimed 15 minutes are up.
I read an interview with Albini once where he said he tries not to be too picky as to who he produces. His philosophy is that he’s there to serve the band and if they like how he works, regardless of whether he actually enjoys the band’s music, then its fine with him. I guess that explains Bush.
BigBlack = Big Dildo
I think BigBlack is really noted Internet Tough Guy Goronchev (look him up on Encyclopedia Dramatica). I’m surprised he hasn’t told us–yet–that we’ve been “Intellectually Checkmated.”
P.S. He also seems to have ripped Chuck Klosterman off in his opinions about STP/Pearl Jam. Way to go, guy.
too true.
STP is on Jimmy Kimmel tonight
actually Big Black guy was wrong from the start. this is Scott’s 2nd solo album.
As wrong as BigBlack is, I don’t see why you people keep responding to him. Telling this jackass that Scott has two solo albums isn’t doing anything but fueling his argument (as even I didn’t pick up that first solo album, and I fucking love the man’s work). Just ignore him and pray he’s found some other ball of string to bat around today.
The first solo disc by weiland..is better than anything STP did. it’s def less commercial…and big black c*cks comment about STP copying the grunge look in their early years is really stupid because STP and many others were breaking away from the regular rock from that day….also known as …the dreadful 80′s music….
yeah 12 Bar Blues was incredible. really looking forward to the new one, albeit 10 years later. as for the ‘grunge’ thing.. it’s just a term that exists for lazy music listeners. the same way the music that people call “emo” isn’t really “emo” at all.
It’s true, 12 bar blues was quite a departure. Before you blast the guy, at least listen to the album. It even has Brad Mehldau on it! Some of it is shit, but definite some good moments.
This question is for BigBlack.
Ok, so you dislike Scott Weiland, we picked up on your opinion!
So… who’s ( if anyone’s!?!?)
music do you care for/like?
So much angst… it must be a GOTH/EMO band like ” HIM” …. right?
>:)
Isn’t it obvious. BigBlack likes Albini’s band Big Black and stuff like that. Congrats to you. Guess what? I listen to STP and Big Black and enjoy everything in between. Because I listen to a band like STP that people dismiss for being a rip off grunge band, I try to be open minded about what people like and listen to. Except for stuff like Nickelback and Fall Out Boy. Now those guys suck.
I actually really enjoy Fall Out Boy. On the surface, people will write them off as another run-of-the-mill MySpacecore-Hot Topic pop-punk band. However, they are extremely hooky, their lyrics have more depth than more (again, you need to dig deeper) and I really respect their songwriting abilities. Wierdly, on the flip side, I love bands like The National, Band Of Horses, Sigur Ros and Tokyo Police Club.
However, on the topic of STP, they are one of the groups I grew up with. I was so young that I never really knew about “cred”, “indie”, etc. I just liked what sounded good to my ears. I wish we all could still live by that mentality. I understand how, at the time, STP could sould like a Pearl Jam ripoff. But they really proved themselves by putting out consistent material (Tiny Music) for example and I think they have a lot more longevity than most of the hipster dufus blog bands who no one REALLY cares about (outside of us dorks who like to post on message boards all day). Weiland is a great front man (though he is a total asshole as a person). Looking forward to his solo album (though I think his ambitions are getting the best of him and he shouldn’t make it a double-record).
Maybe Weiland should become the frontman for Nickelback next…
C’mon people……we’re just not getting to the nitty-gritty of the thread here. Point is, if Weiland is going to put out his memoirs, what’s the title going to be?
If the ghost-writer (yep…I AM assuming Scotty-Boy is probably functionally illiterate, resulting from his fondness for horses and dragons etc.) happens to be reading this, may I suggest one of the following:
1). Rise & Shine Weiland
2). Pick Up The Soap Weiland
3). I Was Born In The Year Of The Horse
….Also, let’s not forget…if Weiland hadn’t continued to push the musical boundaries so damn hard, Chad Kroeger wouldn’t be where he is now, yeah?
And as for Weiland feeling intimidated by Velvet Revolver, surely it’s the other way round. That cat saw some shit in prison NO man should see, I’ll bet money he was like a human version of a leisure centre on a Friday night!
So yeah….don’t hate the playa, hate the game!
weiland looks like a serious moto gp racer in this picture.
i think he should persue a career as such
hahaah
but why the minibike?
Scott Weiland has no business being shirtless. He should really work out more, if he intends on doing the whole show off my upper body thing. I wonder if he thinks he’s jacked. I mean, I like STP and Velvet Revolver (though I’m glad STP is back), but seriously, when you have a sunken chest and string beany arms, work out and/or wear shirts.
How could Scott Weiland ever steal Vedders voice and style? Pearl Jams TEN was released August 27, 1991 – CORE was released September 29, 1992. That´s about a year Scott Weiland had to copy Vedder. I’m a recording artist and I know for sure, it takes a lot of time to write good solid songs. It takes a lot of time to record it too. So meanwhile Pearl Jam was climbing the charts Scott was only listening to the radio and trying to find a way to make his voice sound like Vedder? What do you think, you cunts! That’s not possible. If he ever sounded like someone, it must have been Layne Stanley (Alice In Chains) he sounded like. AIC released their first album 1990. Another fact: Stone Temple Pilot was formed in 1986. That gave Scott 6 years to develop his voice. Eddie Vedder was still working on a gas station in 1990 and got to know about “Pearl jam” (they were named different at that time) after 1990.
So do your math. Keep slating Scott. But have you heard all STPs records. Its not a Scott Weiland wanna b Vedder you’ll meet. Check out his two solo albums. Much more interesting that any Pearl Jam record. And for the record I love all PJs records! Have them all. But Scott is really trying to develop all the time and now, start forgive the man for what he was back then. I can, as a musician, hear that he’s trying to break boundaries. And how can someone say that he hates him. You dont know him. I cant stand Britney Spears music, but I dont hate her. Why should I? Man, grow up and try to listen a bit harder next time. You haters probably say all this evil stuff, because you did not make it yourself. You never had your chance on a stage and at last: YOU HAVE TOO MUCH TIME if you feel that you have to write all this unreal bullshit!
