M. Ward and Zooey continue to mount their televised late night charm offensive with a stop in at Craig Ferguson’s L.A. studio last night, convenient for Matt since he was already out Coachella way. Upon premature enunciation, we pronounced “Change Is Hard” to be a “charmer,” which combined with a slower tempo than Z & M’s song choice for Conan (“Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” with Yo La Tengo), made for dramatically fewer “I’m comfortable and charming no really!” Zooey bugeyed smiles, more opportunity to focus and her sweet and vulnerable twang (get your mind out of the gutter).
Volume One is out via Merge. Also Zooey’s gonna be in the new M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, which we noticed in the trailer premiere during last night’s LOST. Watch it at /Film. It features Marky Mark, so be afraid. Be very afraid.

make them stop please. they are taking boring to the next level
I?m a huge M Ward fan, but find this to be a misstep on a number of levels. The recording/production itself (minus her vocals) is quite good, but the majority of songs are mediocre at best? and her singing is REAL shaky? its obvious in this clip where she seems real pitchy, etc. Wondering if there is some romantic involvement that?s skewing his typically spot on perspective??? She would definitely skew my perspective…
I think she’s got a great voice, but it definitely needs work. I’m hoping Volume 2 will BRING IT.
I agree with Jimmy James, she just needs some work. The haters should just chill out and enjoy. And saying their music is boring? Couldn’t be more wrong in my opinion.
But hey, that’s just my opinion.
Hey Marky Mark got a Oscar nom, but he was also in Planet of the Apes so…

I like the album well enough, but… well there’s just too much restraint: she needed to bust out the vocals once or twice just so we know she can. You hear all the talent there, you know she has it, but… where is “the moment”?
I blame Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey/et al., who bust out all the scales and whatever once a song rendering it sort of impotent. You don’t always need to bring out the big guns, better to use them with restraint. This album? All restraint, no big gun vocals.
i love pbs!!! i think the guy playing acoustic guitar taught boring at harvard for like five years or something. my friends cousin was in his class.
You guys are such cranky dickheads. This record is a fantastic slice of classic pop a la Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, et al.
