ted_nugent-i_love_the_nra.jpg

I grew up in the woods with a taxidermist stepfather and a lot of stuffed deer heads, foxes, and a goose (caught in mid-flight) decorating the house. I have eaten homemade deer sausage. My mother drives a pickup and uses the pickup part for work-related activities, like hauling hay for her horses. I have been given camo non-ironicallly. When I interviewed Bon Iver about the deep woods and hunting, I nodded in recognition more than twice (six times, actually). All that said, Ted Nugent’s passion for the NRA goes further than and deeper than anyone I know. His love (lust?) runs so deep, he wrote an anthem about it. The lyrics are horrible. As is the song. But we wanted to print them anyhow, because if you take the time to listen, you might as well sing along. Also, please note the press release let us know that the “freedom-loving song” should be written in all caps: “I AM THE NRA.” In case the lyrics themselves weren’t venison-fisted enough. Bad touch, Uncle Ted.

When I think of freedom
I got my Bill Of Rights
US Constitution is my guiding light
Our founding fathers, they were not confused
I always celebrate self-evident truths
I AM THE NRA I AM THE NRA
I am we the people
I don’t need no OK
My pursuit of happiness will take me all the way
If you hate slavery as much as we all do
Come on join the fight, I’ll tell you what we do
I AM THE NRA I AM THE NRA
If you hate tyrants and dictators and are ready to give freedom a whirl
Celebrate the NRA and the shot heard round the world
The shot heard round the world

Slavery equated with anti-gun laws. The song debuted at the NRA Convention May 17-18 in Louisville and we’re told the Nuge, who’s currently in his fifth term on the NRA’s Board Of Directors, called the convention “the ultimate Ted Nugent party,” with “more than 67,000 of my closest friends.” Anyone make it this year? Anyhow, Ted is really emo about this one:

We know in our hearts and souls that God gave each of us a precious, equal, miraculous gift of life. And we also know, that if not for the formation and growth of this fundamental grassroots organization, individual American citizens would no longer have that US Constitutionally guaranteed God given right to keep and bear arms for the protection of this gift. Thank God for the NRA.

And thank God the full download is available (for a price, like freedom) at Ted’s site as well as the NRA’s website. The NRA’s website! Watch out Amazon. Fittingly, the song was recorded in Waco. If you have the urge, mashups would be appreciated.

I was in Target in Waco on Christmas Eve last year, where I spotted Ted Nugent in line behind me at the check out. I said, “Hello” because, well, c’mon, it’s Ted Nugent in a Waco Target. He shook my hand and was very gracious. Smelled like he hadn’t showered in days. He was in his full hunting apparel, too. He wished me a Merry Christmas and I was on my way. I washed my hand before I did any more shopping.

I don’t have a problem with the Nuge, all things considered, but whenever denizens of the right-wing cry foul about “tyrants and dictators”, my brain explodes. It’s like someone telling me 2 + 2 = apple.

so does this mean we should all get ready? i mean, the attacks are coming. china’s got troops got off the coast of san diego ready to blow in at the drop of a hat. bush has all the laws signed- when there’s the next terra attack, bush is going to declare marshall law and…

damn, where’s my gun? where’s my copy of ‘cat scratch fever’? kinda got off on a tangent there…heh.

why the hell do i still live in Jackson, MI? not only is it the birth place of the republican party, but it’s also the home of the Nuge’s (canned) hunting ranch. @$$hole

i’m from jackson too, didn’t realize people there read this either. gives me some hope that not all jackson people are like the Nuge.

I find it interesting that many of these posts denegrate The Nuge as an outspoken provocatuer. Yet, Bono andf all of these other outspoken celebrities are held in reverence. Everyone has a cause, whether it’s your thing or not. I betcha many of the negative comments come from urban living individuals who only equate guns=bad. Rural people actually use guns as a tool so their appreciation for guns is understood. thus the urbanite’s disdain for them is understandable, as well. Agree to disagree, folks!

I don’t know where you’ve been, but anytime Bono is mentioned on Stereogum, everybody gives him shit for his messianic do-gooderism. Your cries of liberal hypocrisy ring false.

Actually Appleface the birthplace of the Republican party is Ripon, Wisconsin.

God bless Ted Nugent and the NRA!!!

    • appleface  |   Posted on May 30th, 2008

wow, i’m glad to know that there are other Jacksonites who read Stereogum!

well apparently Ripon had the first informal meeting and Jackson the first official one (“under the oaks” and whatnot). still doesn’t change the horror of what that party’s become.

apparently a young middle/high schooler was shot and killed while playing with a gun with his friends not too far from here the other week…

      thanks a lot NRA.

yes it must be the NRAs fault that there are dumb fucks out there and crazy people. i hope you no thats fucking ridiculous

I live in Indianapolis, which is not the most progressive city. At RibFest a couple of summers ago Ted Nugent was the featured performer and I think he felt pretty comfortable expressing his pro-Gun message. And for a guy who has been in the music business since the late 1960′s (Amboy Dukes), I was really amazed how crappy his songs were. But at some point, Nugent went on about putting a machine gun in the hands of every man, woman and child and at that point the audience got a little quiet.

hey appleface, im from jackson also but moved in away in 97. i didnt know people in jackson read stereogum, no offense. ted used to come to my track meets when we would compete with his daughters school. i wonder if ted knew his precious little girl made sexy time with most of jackson. probably not or he wouldve shot her.

  12. It’s no Wang Dang Sweet Poontang
It’s not even as good as Wango Tango

  13. i’m thinking the shot heard ’round the world should involve a triple-aught shotgun, his finger, and his throat.

    Ted Nugent = Worst Everything

  15. these have got to be the greatest lyrics ever written. with the exception of “Fred Bear” of course.

  16. Dave  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2008

Ted Nugent is a loudmouthed Chickenhawk Neocon has-been. He talks really tough, but Nugent never had the balls to strap on the gear and serve his country like me or the hundreds of thousands just like me. It’s really easy for punks like this to flap his little suck and act like a real wild tough guy, especially when he never played the game. Here’s a suggestion, “Nuge.” Shut the fuck up and choke on yone of your arrowheads you fucking pussy.

I think everyone should be like the nudge

  18. fucknugent  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2008

“I think everyone should be like the nudge”
what? a child molester? a draft dodger? a coward who talks tough but cries like a pussy when challenged to fight with his fists?

“hey appleface, im from jackson also but moved in away in 97. i didnt know people in jackson read stereogum, no offense. ted used to come to my track meets when we would compete with his daughters school. i wonder if ted knew his precious little girl made sexy time with most of jackson. probably not or he wouldve shot her.”
well no, i’d say he’d watch and jerk off. he probably taught them what to do and that’s why they’re so obviously sexually acting out. apparently they told of how he brought a 12year old home from a concert and molested her for days on end. poor little kid. and you know waht they say…once a pedo ALWAYS a pedo…so some poor kid is copping his withered knob even as we speak. i pray for the day when someon (courtney?) speaks out in court and gets this vile animal put away.
