Concertgoers had their hands full on Friday night in NYC: Delancey Street hosted one of the year’s must-see shows as Apes & Androids made their Bowery Ballroom debut with a mighty Forms/Free Blood/Reggie Watts-enabled lineup (pics later). Abbey Braden met us at Bowery later in the evening, but not before joining the throngs at the South Street Seaport for a relatively early set from the reunited post-punk legends of Wire. The show was jointly thrown by folks at River To River and the South Street Seaport festivals, the latter of which kept us very busy last summer. Getting down to Wire looked to be a good way to get it going again. Full pic spread post jump.

As someone who counts Wire as one of my all-time favorite bands, I was really bummed by the show and actually left early. Say what you will about the new material but the sound was pretty bad and it didn’t benefit the repetitive droning style which was unpunctuated by older material until late in the set. When they did get around to classic stuff like the 15th it was quite weak, lots of missed chords and the band seemed to not know what parts each other were playing. Anyways, good to see them out, shame about the show. Though I heard them playing Lowdown as I pedaled off

  3. loved it. incendiary show! quite a few selections from Send and Pink Flag, plus the new stuff which sounded great as well. no complaints
from me about the sound, though the lights were extremely annoying. great gig, so glad they came, and of course it was free!! can’t beat
that. looking forward to the new disc and fall gigs.
