The 2008 Summer Olympics are coming to Beijing and McDonald’s has a new commercial to remind you that Happy Meals taste even better than victory. The spot features “A Minha Menina,” a 40-year-old tune from Tropicália heroes Os Mutantes, who have been recording new material since their reunion tour two years ago. The commercial has gotten a rave review from someone who reviews commercials. Watch it after the jump, then buy some delicious fast food for the young athlete in your life.
I always welcome Os Mutantes during commercial breaks. Sorry Santogold, you can’t win ‘em all.

Are we to assume that the message in this commercial isn’t “Losers love McDonald’s” or “McDonald’s: Won’t make you any more athletic”?
This is ridiculous that such an amazing band in the radical movement of Tropicalismo is supporting such consumerism! An outrage! I am sad to say that several people including myself are disappointed by this move! I mean Os Mutantes were one of the artists that tried to drive more and more people to be socially aware of political activism…right?
Os Mutantes are no strangers to advertising. They starred in a series of TV commercials for Shell in Brazil back in the late 60′s. Check them out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MJCaGvrPRk

how else are these bands going to make money? you damn kids are getting their music for free and gas prices are making nationwide tours into three city ventures!
commercials are the new record labels.
What a cute commercial. I love it. Good for McDonalds.
Go McDonalds!!! This commercial not only inspires the participation in team sports amongst todays youth but also focuses on the thrill of victory and the dignity of defeat. Great storline. I hope this commercial airs during the Olympics to encourage todays youth to get out there and play! I’m lovn it!
The problem with the commercial is that the visual makes no sense in the context of the lyrics. It left me wondering who this girl was.
I just hope that Rita and the boys (as well as Jorge Ben Jor) made a bundle of money.
Jey,
I fuckin’ hate McDonald’s and in fact have boycotted it since 2001 but the song is great. I was stoked to hear total FUZZ guitar on commercial television this past weekend while looking at the olympics. As far as the lyrics matching the storyline of the commercial – who cares? Most folks watching it do not know Portuguese….
MORE FUZZ guitar on TV I say. Check out The Ugly Beats – my little band.

Does anyone know if this commercial is playing in other countries as well?
I found this site on Google while trying to find out who did music in the McDonalds ad. I can’t get the song out of my mind. Thanks guys, I’m going out now to try to find an Os Mutantes CD. As to selling out, well corporate fascism appropriates all. How about Mercedes selling cars using Janis Joplin’s “Oh Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz”, a putdown to showy consumerism and materialism, and a rejoiner to her showbiz friends who were competing buying luxury cars as soon as the first paychecks arrived. I’m going listen to the link here one more time!
Couldn’t believe when I heard Mcdonald’s using an Os Mutantes song, I have the album this song is on(Which I highly recommend buying this album), and if you haven’t heard “Bat Macumba” off the same album, give it a listen, Crazy treated guitar and chant that you can blast while driving!
