After being touted as the saviors of Sub Pop (employees started wearing Sub Pop t-shirts again, hooray), the Shins are moving on to greener pastures. Or, really, their own backyard. Billboard.com reports:
The Shins are likely to self-release their fourth studio album through frontman James Mercer’s Aural Apothecary label … The Shins are seeking a deal that would allow them to own their masters, “and, in addition to the marketing tools we have at our own disposal, team up with a label partner that will assist with additional marketing, radio, and various costs,” [Shins manager, Ian] Montone reports.
Makes sense. And now so does the Shins’ notable omission from the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary party lineup.

You cut out all the parts where they explain how they are looking to continue to have some sort of partnership with a label, possibly Sub Pop.
“Shins manager Ian Montone explained that the band is currently working on a new deal for their future recordings, and a possible new arrangement would “be more of a [pressing and distribution] deal than a traditional record deal.” He added, “That partner could very well remain Sub Pop, who have done a remarkable job with the band and have a great staff of people who really love music.”
Montone mentioned that the band are looking to gain ownership of the master recordings of their next album, as well as “team up with a label partner that will assist with additional marketing, radio, and various costs.” They’re looking to make the move in order to “have the best of all possible worlds — control and ownership, as well as the ability to still partner with a label and take advantage of traditional infrastructure.” Montone also hinted that Sub Pop may take up the digital rights for the release of the record, but ultimately, “the first goal is to make the record and see where that takes us.”

i was so disappointed in Wincing… hope their next record is more like the first
