Hats are off to the Grizzly guys for having the mettle to play 50% new stuff at these Radiohead tour stops. (It helps that the songs are being so rapturously received, although if the last LP I put out was in 2006 I’d probably do the same and I am a shit songwriter.) Their set at All Points West — for which the sun reemerged, marking a turn around for a previously dull day — included the core four of “Two Weeks,” “While You Wait For The Others,” and the two we first heard heard at Lolla: the Ed cut (for now “Untitled”), and the new Dan song they’ve named “Fine For Now.” Both pull off a few shades from the outright sunny poptimism of the more blogged about pair, and “Fine For Now” is an altogether artier excursion, with more unpredictable rhythm section work, a passing chordal central riff, and quite a climax.

Not that anyone’s complained about the previous new tunes’ immediacy, but it’s nice to know the band’s working on some knottier pieces. Grizzly have three more shows with Radiohead (maybe you’ve heard of them). That photo is by Abbey Braden; check more of her shots from Friday @ APW here, and we’ll have one more batch from the rest of the fest shortly.

  1. What was the full set list?

    • loved 'em.  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2008

      yes, someone post please!

ed wholeheartedly waved hello at me in the midst of setting up while the crowd was bumbling around waiting. it was terribly sweet.

  2. saw them at Music Hall of Williamsburg and felt a little disappointed. anyone else?

  3. Well it IS very cool of them to give people a sniff of all this stuff. Maybe it’s different in person but a song like this seems to be more about headphone ecstasy to my ears. I’m all for the return of the single as a dominant form of music. That would really get the pot boiling in a 60′s like way maybe. Taking two years between albums was unheard of. You could have made rubber soul and revolover in that time. “Momentum” is what i’m trying to say here…

  4. i feel i’m in the minority but i like ed’s songs the best.

i thought everyone likes ed’s songs the best.

    • yeah i love Ed’s voice. it’s so melodic. I’m not a huge fan of Dan’s voice. This is a good song but i probably would have liked it better if it were Ed singing instead of Dan.

  5. Probably the most overrated band of the last couple years…ugh. Can’t stand Grizzly Bear. This song just cements why.

    boooorrringgg

  7. well, i dunno i gotta say i think Dan is a frickin genius with the voice of an angel. but they’re both quite talented. I’m always amazed at how much crazy multitasking Chris Taylor does live.

We already live in a singles culture. The difference between the current singles culture and that of the 60′s is that right now singles belong to shitty albums. in the 60′s the single was a selected track from a greater work.

wow, this abbey gal is getting a lot of ink time in your blogs lately. i’m sure there’s a good story behind the scenes as to why.

  10. meeko  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2008

wow, to the above poster “dissapointed” with their MHOW show, that was one of the best I’d seen them and the crowd was seriously deafening in their applause (myself included)

sometimes when people would clap out of turn or consistently yell praise, I got annoyed but generally I’d have to say it was a fucking amazing show

  11. Perhaps we llive in a singles culture, but bands aren’t singles minded. I’m sure there must be a business reason behind it. Everything so boring, planned out and predicatable. My wish is that things would start happening to the point stereogum won’t feel the need to bore me with Chris Cornell, Converse commercial bullshit….hmmm… now I see the problem…it smells like wallmart in here somethimes…

    Holy Hell.

  13. so good at apw.

  14. why does this remind me of steely dan?

  15. hipstrkillr  |   Posted on Aug 11th, 2008

One of the most worthless and boring bands ever I think. Stop encouraging this weak shit. I mean seriously do u all just hate music or what?

All i want to do i fight Grizzly Bear and put an end to this nonsense.

you officially are confirming that they are huge by your stupid uninformed comment.

people like you only make me and (most people) love them more

you are probably “ACE” with a different name

    • FINALLY…someone who feels my pain.

    • eric  |   Posted on Aug 13th, 2008

people that call themselves “hipstrkllr” don’t deserve to be taken seriously

  16. serge  |   Posted on Aug 12th, 2008

Dan Rossen’s voice I love you.

What’s the complaint against a commercial motivation behind a song? History reveals the best songs ever written to be completely motivated by money– 1920s-50s musicals. The most significant trend that’s altered the way songs are written is the preference of the performer being the songwriter.

  18. they performed this last night in dc. i enjoyed it immensely.

  19. matthew  |   Posted on Aug 12th, 2008

yeah, they were amazing in d.c last night, Chris Taylor really is the man, he does soooo much, best band hands down

    • they were amazing. i was sitting in front and you should of seen their faces as they walked out to a standing ovation. they were smiling from ear to ear.

i will agree with you. chris taylor’s vocals gave me the chills last night.. and seriously, what can’t he do? he’s a god.

  20. zoo yorke  |   Posted on Aug 13th, 2008

they played this in montreal, it blew my mind, i dont understand how someone cant like this, they must not appreciate melody or vocal harmonies, pop/rock music, this song is gorgeous, and im a huge radiohead fan

  21. dramamine  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2008

is it wrong that i don’t feel strongly either way about bands like this or, say, fleet foxes? to me both are likeable and pretty, but not transcendant or life altering. both also seem to be without the ambition to be the second, though, which makes it hard for me to see how some people despise them the way they seem to.

sock puppet n. A fake persona used to discuss or comment on oneself or one’s work, particularly in an online discussion group or the comments section of a blog. ?adj.

This song was simply spellbinding Mon night in DC!

And you’re right – Ed’s an absolute sweetheart. Got lost looking for the balcony, and somehow ended up backstage. If not for Ed taking time to show me the right entrance, I’d still be wandering around backstage.
